Armada really has nailed the mission over death match gameplay. I wish X -Wing would develop that some more.
XWing Missions are AWESOME!
My local FLGS is wrapping up a six-week league using missions for several of the games. People seemed to enjoy the change of pace, since most of our games are standard or furballs.
I agree! Missions are a really underdeveloped aspect of X-wing play right now. I suggest you check out Heroes of the Aturi Cluster , and check out Mission Control for some interesting missions.
We do a lot of mission reviews on the Shuttle Tydirium podcast, too. You should check it out!
Does anyone sell Heroes of the Aturi Cluster kits? It looks cool, but having to download files and find a place to print them off at has kept me from pursuing it further.
As far as missions go, I haven't played too many with my kids yet. The ones we have done were really fun though.
No, selling it would be a glaring copyright infringement, and get the whole thing shut down in a heartbeat.
I know heros of the aturi cluster had a bunch of planned changes and suggestions and updates and expansions for version 8.I agree! And I know josh was busy and had to put it on hold. So I was wondering when version 8 might possibly come out.
I printed v.7 (the latest), and have encountered no issues. Version 8 may never come out, and if it does, it would not make v.7 obsolete, you'll easily be able to print a new rule book and scenario book separately (the largest part of the likely change in v.8). More than 50% of HotAC is the ship cards, and the terrain.
Don't hold back from playing HotAC because of an update that may never come. It's fantastic.
We plan to start again all the missions from the core set, going through the waves as they came. We'll probably do a report here when we do.
We've started today: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/225721-mission-1-political-escort/
Agreed! The missions are something I would love to get into...
I wish I had them all spread out though, like a book style format.
Wonder if FFG will ever give X-Wing a sort of freeform 'mini-campaign' like they are apparently doing for 'Armada' ?
I agree that the missions are very good, however they do run into the issue noted in the thread - not all missions work very well with the potential lists that can be made since the mission came out.
A campaign structure can help balance that a bit, by the resulting missions being more organically created. (And it also solves one of the other "problems" with the missions - so few of them are truly asymmetrical, which is one of the things that mission-based play should theoretically be REALLY GOOD at highlighting)
I've got such a project in the works; it's a ways out from being release-ready though.

I have created a few campaigns involving a series of missions, and each win or loss determines the next mission in the series. It was a lot of fun. Also, we play with a Dead-Is-Dead rule. . .unique pilots, once killed, are out for the rest of the campaign. I gets you to rely on the generics and only dig out the heroes when you know they will be essential to the mission at hand. Or, OTOH, a lost mission could feel like a victory because you greased some uber-annoying ace pilot in the process!
The Dengar mission and the Brobots mission are my favorite. Brobots is a 3-player setup. Two friends and I once set up a 100-point 3-way dogfight using the mission's deployment rules and had a freaking blast with it.
The Rebel Aces mission is also really interesting, as are all the Huge Ship campaigns.
