XWing Missions are AWESOME!

By Plainsman, in X-Wing

My son and I got tired of "deathmatches" in general, no matter the point values. We started playing the missions going back to the first Core set. Then we used only the ships that were available for the Wave the mission was released. This has been very fun and rejuvenated XWing for us.

We had a discussion tonight about wargaming in general. Through this we have finally discovered the high points and low points of our wargaming experiences. We both enjoy the tactics and the "fight" no matter the system more than using the rules to win. We fight the fight, then figure out what dice to grab to get the results! Rather than the reverse...

Missions focus on tactics and flying rather than killing and this represents what XWing was meant to be for us.

agreed, I wish more of us focused on mission based games in casual play.

I agree! Missions are a really underdeveloped aspect of X-wing play right now. I suggest you check out Heroes of the Aturi Cluster , and check out Mission Control for some interesting missions.

We do a lot of mission reviews on the Shuttle Tydirium podcast, too. You should check it out!

My gaming group just recently started running Missions, and I gotta say it's breathed a whole lot of life into the game for me. It's made us a lot more experimental with our list-building, trying to come up with the best squads for each scenario rather than just whatever's on top of the meta, and we've gotten a lot of use out of "jack of all trades" ships that don't get much play in specialized squad v squad deathmatch (honest to God, the only "fix" necessary for the T-65 is to just play it in Missions). And it just feels a lot more like 'proper' Star Wars.

I'm sure I'll still do squad v squad matches, but for me, Missions are the way to go.

My friend and I just started playing missions, and we're really enjoying the chance of pace! We particulaly like the narrative feel of them. In fact, we've decided to slowly work our way through each of them.

This thread makes me happy. There's so much scope to Star Wars in general and X Wing in particular, it's depressing to watch whole swathes of people play nothing but 100/6 matches over and over and over.

MISSION: KILL DAT!!!

You could also try running the old X-Wing/TIE missions from the core set with T-70s and /fos for some shenanigans!

Mis...sions?

The world ain't england... scrmuple-snuff...

:P

I found a lot of the official missions to be a bit meh. There are some gems, but mostly meh.

Why did you link Mission Control rather than your guide to Mission Control? Your guide is a useful directory, Mission Control itself gives you fly Soontir at a PWT over and over mission.

My girlfriend and I ran the CR90 campaign last month (we are big fans of the EU, so we set it in the New Republic era e.g. E-Wing and K-Wing allowed, no Biggs, etc). And I can totally agree, missions are a great thing :)

would be cool if the op kits had missions instead of death matches.. Its one of the reason i actually like STAW ops slightly better than X-wing ops. even-though X-wing has superior game play, the standard death matches is/are just getting slightly old.

Does anyone sell Heroes of the Aturi Cluster kits? It looks cool, but having to download files and find a place to print them off at has kept me from pursuing it further.

As far as missions go, I haven't played too many with my kids yet. The ones we have done were really fun though.

Have never played a mission, and have never even really wanted to, but great to see plenty enjoy it. I am considering HotAC though.

I have no idea where my mission tokens even are.

Some missions don't hold up with all the latest cards and are worth playing with just what was around when they came out, but others are actually much better with all the latest toys. I really like the Senator's Shuttle mission with all the extra toys and such. I spent a few weeks playing that mission on both sides with all sorts of ideas. Some worked great and some.....did terrible. I found that the Tie Punisher was just brutal in that mission. There are so many ships that really shine in different roles other than death match.

Babaganoosh and I do our Casual podcast and we review some of the missions. We haven't reviewed the 3rd in the boxed set as we have been working through the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster campaign. If you like missions, you will LOVE that campaign.

I really liked the Ghost mission and the one in Imperial Vets, as well. There are a lot I've never done.

The epic campaigns for each ship are also very cool. I highly recommend them.

Babaganoosh's guide to Mission Control is great. They really need to tweak that website to make it more usable, but it has some gems.

I've played a few mission with my son. The ones we enjoyed the most so far were the Epic ones.

We plan to start again all the missions from the core set, going through the waves as they came. We'll probably do a report here when we do.

By the way, there are a couple of missions I apparently managed to lose. Is there somewhere on ffg site a way to download a pdf of the missions?

Cheers

I'm going to have HoTAC printed up and try with my friends soon.

Thank you heychadwick!

I tried to print HoTAC but has some issues with my A4 paper and gave up. I'll have to try another time.

Wonder if FFG will ever give X-Wing a sort of freeform 'mini-campaign' like they are apparently doing for 'Armada' ?

I agree that the missions are very good, however they do run into the issue noted in the thread - not all missions work very well with the potential lists that can be made since the mission came out.

A campaign structure can help balance that a bit, by the resulting missions being more organically created. (And it also solves one of the other "problems" with the missions - so few of them are truly asymmetrical, which is one of the things that mission-based play should theoretically be REALLY GOOD at highlighting)

And I know josh was busy and had to put it on hold. So I was wondering when version 8 might possibly come out.
