A more forgiving build!

By Whitey161, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi All,

I am pretty new to X-Wing. Not sure how ive avoided it for so long as i'm into a bunch of other miniatures games.

So i've been investigating lists and watching battle reports in anticipation of my first tournament. Being a bit of a noob I picked a list that has done well recently and set about trying it out for myself. Palp Aces with Soontir and the inquisitor.

While I enjoyed flying this list I found it to be very unforgiving, especially for someone like me without a lot of experience. Soontir especially is dead if you make one mistake too many.

SO what I am asking is what would you suggest that will be a bit more forgiving. An adaptation of the palp aces or something different. I play Imperial and am happy to get whatever ships I need. I very much like flying a swarm but didn't see hardly any swarms in the recent battle reports I watched. All jumpmasters and palp aces.

Thanks in advance

Swap soontir for x7 title + VI Vessery. More forgiving and has a bromance with Inquisitor who TLs every turn.

I think you may see the swarm start making a comeback. Specifically the mini swarm coupled with an ace of some flavor. I have personally enjoyed this build quite a bit:

TIE Defender: Glaive Squadron Pilot (34)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Tractor Beam (1)

TIE/D (0)

TIE Fighter: · "Howlrunner" (18)

Crack Shot (1)

TIE Fighter: Black Squadron Pilot (14)

Crack Shot (1)

Simple and effective. Tractor first, then Howlrunner rerolls to help out your mini swarm, and Crack Shots to push damage through. It's enough damage and PS that you should be able to down one JM5K before it even gets a shot off. And the others will have trouble with the swarm after their Munitions are spent. Against Palp Aces, just slow it up and take longer range shots at them. With the amount of fire toy can throw at them, you will likely be able to push at least some damage through. Don't be afraid to Crack Shot to get extra damage either. Even if it only results in one damage, it's damage and against aces, any damage is vital. With 5 ships to try to eat through, I think a lot of lists will have trouble with this one. You can fly it as a swarm entirely, but I like breaking the defender off and flanking a bit with it.

palp aces is very forgiving

but I think Wurms has the right of it with Defenders.

they're not as fancy when it comes to dancing around the table, but

  • x7 is action independent, so you'll always get the evade after a speed 3 or higher manuever
  • the 4k is white, so you'll never be stressed if you bump into someone. Just do it again next round!
  • 6 health means less dice related bull

you can roll with

Vessery (Juke, tie/x7)

Ryad (Push the limit, tie/mk2, tie/x7)

palp shuttle (just palp)

and probably run through most lists using the sheer weight of your modifiers

Swarms are not forgiving, unless you exclusively play opponents that love to joust past the point of reason. Flying that many ships is already difficult, and Tie Fighters tend to pop whether you've flown them well or not

Said like your name implies, with green dice not being friendly to you. I guess the reason I was feeling it was forgiving is because losing 1 ship in a 5 ship build isn't as significant as losing 1 ship in what is essentially a 2 ship build.

Thanks for the replies and advice.

Ive got the vets so ill give both of those a go. Really like that swarm plus defender build with the tractor beam.

Ive run a defender a couple of ties and enjoyed flying them.

Did try whisper last night and he was very good, miss the boost a bit but still a lot of learning for me to do.

Again though the inquisitor came out my MVP.

Cheers.

For the same price you may as well use Maarek with adaptability. You get a pilot ability into the bargain then.
