What's so awesome about the Gunboat?

Skipray Blastboat!!!

That has been on my list. Ultimately I think it would share a LOT of characteristics with the YT-2400: a "weak" turret as a primary weapon, have a cannon upgrade slot (although it could introduce the HEAVY Ion Cannon), and probably some ordnance loads but may not have the crew slot.

Here's what would make the Skipray something different from what's already in the game: instead of a turret primary, it gets an ion primary . Those three big ion cannons are obviously its main weapons, after all.

I agree about the cannon being the actual primary weapon on the Skipray but when it comes to the game rules it would be so much easier to give it a turret primary and have the big Ion cannon be some kind of upgrade. Without that you're going to need rules text explaining the primary weapon or a title that provides that functionality but fills that possible design space.

Now if you're worried about the cannon being overpowered on something else give the Skipray two cannon slots and make the upgrade fill both of them. Now you only have to worry about Aggressors stealing the cannon.

$20 for a cheap joystick that'll do just fine for classic games. It's not like you need a new video card or anything fancy to play the X-wing series.

Yeah...but that's $20. I dunno. I might be able to sneak it past the wife, but she already gets on my case for spending $20 / month on comics.

If only my bluetooth headphones didn't break two weeks ago.

If you are at that point that $20 is a big difference, then you are at the sweet spot where meddling with some config files can make your X-Box controller work perfectly fine with the DOS versions of TIE Fighter.

I know it is heresy for many purists, but in my experience a game controller with analog sticks and lots of buttons beats any joystick at playing the X-Wing series.

Just configure the DOS version of the game's DOSBOX file to recognize the XBox controller . Then, launch the game and use the CTRL+F1 key combo to bring the DOSBOX button mapper, and map all useful keyboard commands to different buttons in the gamepad.

In particular, I would map these at the bare minimum:

Mouse1 (shoot active weapon)

Mouse2 (target ship in front / hold to roll)

R (target nearest enemy)

S (balance shield energy)

W (change weapon)

[ (1/3 throttle)

] (2/3 throttle)

Backspace (Full throttle)

F9 (Laser charge)

F10 (Shield charge)

Later on, when you feel more comfortable with the game, try to map also

B (use tractor beam)

X (change weapon fire setting)

' (Transfer energy from weapons to shields)

Remember that most game controllers have a button behind the analog sticks that you can press by pressing the stick. Those are handy for rarely used commands like these later ones..

I don't know...I guess it could work if you're on a budget, but I'd certainly prefer a joystick and keyboard if the option were available.

After seeing all these Gunboat ULTRAS on this thread, I honestly think that the reason they don't make it is to keep interest in the game. Once the ULTRAS get their gunboat, they may stop buying new ships.

If that's the case, then their plan is backfiring. Wave 7 was the last wave I got at least one of every ship. Wave 8 I got only two ships total. Wave 9 I won't be getting any.
