What's so awesome about the Gunboat?

By Supertoe, in X-Wing

heychadwick - if you've never played any of the X-Wing PC games, do it.

Now. Do it now. Seriously, what are you waiting for? Get on over to GOG and get them downloaded! Lickety-split!

Shouldn't discount nostalgia - X-Wing: The Miniatures Game was originally built on nostalgia, using as it did the same name as the 90's PC games.

No joystick. I'm not flush with cash, either. Not a lot of time, too. I've got my xbox and not so keen on getting more equipment for my pc. I've thought about it, but decided to just skip it. I did play X-wing vs. Tie Fighter and that was awesome.

While I'm not sure how well it works if you've got an X-Box then you should have a windows compatible joystick in the X-Box controller. I can understand the time and potential setup headaches however.

It works but... it's sucky.

"What's so awesome about the Gunboat?"

I think people have sufficiently answered this already, but here's another perspective on the topic... The only thing left on my to-buy list is Imperial Veterans. Once I have that, I'm actually done buying X-Wing miniatures because I have no interest in the prequel trilogy ships, sequel trilogy ships, or cartoon ships (I'm still on the fence about the Anthology movies). There are only three things that would make me buy more ships:

1. Scum huge ships

2. Rebel Veterans pack

3. Any ship from the TIE Fighter game

1 and 2 are pretty much inevitable, but FFG is running out of incentives for me unless they return to TIE Fighter.

After seeing all these Gunboat ULTRAS on this thread, I honestly think that the reason they don't make it is to keep interest in the game. Once the ULTRAS get their gunboat, they may stop buying new ships.

Too late: I skipped the Tie FO and have even skipped Imperial Veterans (though I will eventually get the latter). Although I was dead opposed to prequel ships hitting the game, I will relent for the ARC as dayum, dat paint job. Otherwise, nothing has tickled my fancy.

Also I'm not even talking about outpost admirals: if an imperial grand moff has shares in KDY and has the option to buy Sienar or KDY, guess what he's going to do?

Edit: I see Imperial nu canon and old canon super projects as just these giant fund siphons for imperial admirals and grand Moffs to get stupidly rich.

"Let's limit variety and deny people what they want in order to maintain interest"? As Treebeard once said, "That does not make sense to me..."

...Or become ultras of another ship.

After the gunboat, it will be the TIE Avenger.

Then the Missile Boat.

The DX-9 transport.

Then the R-41 Starchaser.

The T-Wing.

The CUV-1.

The Muurian Transport.

etc...

Another thing to mention is that if and when they release the gunboat, I'll be moving on to Scum Epic ships. Never lose hope Scum... we'll get our big ship.

What, no love for the Type D Containers?

Here's a point. I played X-wing before I played TIE.

I fought the Gunboats first time around, and as an imperial fanboy they fascinated me. skip forward to the summer of '95 me buying TIE Fighter and sitting at Woolworths top floor cafe in Leamington, looking at the screenshots. I was "I really can't wait to fly the Assault Gunboat and TIE Advanced" way more so than the unshielded TIEs. I didn't even know about the TIE Defender.

Course it must have took me an hour and a crash course in memmaker and emm386 to even get the ***** running. But still.

Those were the days, boot disks galore.

I remember when I got tie fighter we had a 20mb hard drive and it took up 14mb, kids today don't know how good they got it with **** near unlimited storage and easy to find fixes.

Skipray Blastboat!!!

Skipray Blastboat!!!

The list of old EU favorites that FFG has ignored is large, very large. The fact that GUNBOAT has garnered the largest following is a combination of factors, the least of which is its role as a shielded Imperial fighter that's not a super TIE but instead a work horse for the guys who have to get the job done but not get the glory of the hot shot test pilots and aces.

...

Skipray Blastboat!!!

That has been on my list. Ultimately I think it would share a LOT of characteristics with the YT-2400: a "weak" turret as a primary weapon, have a cannon upgrade slot (although it could introduce the HEAVY Ion Cannon), and probably some ordnance loads but may not have the crew slot.

Here's what would make the Skipray something different from what's already in the game: instead of a turret primary, it gets an ion primary. Those three big ion cannons are obviously its main weapons, after all.

That's my take on the Blastboat as well. Ion Primary and Turret Upgrade.

As long as the Blastboat's primary is able to deal more than 1 damage, it should be fine. Otherwise it would be too hard for it to pull its weight.

Let it have a normal 3 primary attack, and have a title like the Shadowcaster's, or similar.

"When performing a primary weapon attack that hits, at the Compare Results step you must cancel 1 or more uncancelled (*) or (¤) results. The defender is assigned 1 ion token for every result cancelled this way. Then the defender suffers 1 damage."

It would act like a primary weapon, with extra die at range 1, but also like an ion canon, with the peculiarity that it allows to either deal more than 1 damage or deal more than 1 ion token. Also, it can deal critical damage with the right rolls.

1 uncancelled hits -> 1 damage and 1 ion token.

2 uncancelled hits -> either 2 damage and 1 ion token, or 1 damage and 2 ion tokens.

3 uncancelled hits -> either 3 damage 1 ion, or 2 damage 2 ion, or 1 damage 3 ion.

etc

It can be good against fighters, because it would limit its ion output to one, leaving the rest as damage.

Also good against large ships, since it can ionize them with a single attack if it gets at least two hits in.

Then also good against huge ships, because it can assign a lot of ions to mess with their energy regeneration.

For the record, I am totally a DX-9 Ultra, But I own a Mel's DX-9. A pic is on the official gunboat thread somewhere.

I'm Also a Nebulon -B frigate Ultra. I have one.

I'm an Arquitens or Acclamator Ultra. ARGH KITTENS IF anyone makes a knock off or of FFG make one for x-wing i'll get.

Acclamator will make me buy into Armada.

I'm a competent Stormtrooper Ultra.

Once we get the Gunboat, I'm totally hopping on the DX-9 hype train. There's a pic on Mel's Gunboat page on Shapeways that has Gunboats and a DX-9 and it just looks so good.

I actually modded XvT to fly the DX-9, Alliance you can with the upgrade anyway. With alliance since you can perform boardings...

I can at least pretend I'm one of the Elite Stormtroopers while my wingmates cover my ass.

I'm VERY tempted to make a DX-9 thread as a sister to the XG-1. But I truly believe that without the XG-1 the ship loses a lot of it's allure.

This said. the DX-9 is canon.

It fills a gap in the Imperial lineup, it looks amazing, it has a lot of nostalgia appeal to those who played Tie Fighter back in the day.

Where?

$20 for a cheap joystick that'll do just fine for classic games. It's not like you need a new video card or anything fancy to play the X-wing series.

Yeah...but that's $20. I dunno. I might be able to sneak it past the wife, but she already gets on my case for spending $20 / month on comics.

If only my bluetooth headphones didn't break two weeks ago.

Also in the off topic I yelled it like 6 months ago...
