What's so awesome about the Gunboat?

By Supertoe, in X-Wing

The main GUNBOAT topic has like a million pages that have hashed out several reasonable ways to bring the ship into the game and make it unique. And the reason why so many people have spent so much time on this one ship is because it was very deserving of the treatment that the Defender got but never had toys or models or even many appearances outside of the PC series. Same with the Avenger, which I'm surprised hasn't made it into the game either, especially since there's already 2 Advanced TIEs and soon to be THREE TIE Fighters.

GUNBOAT will be a good cheap cannon carrier and should be a viable option for missile carrier alpha strikes with a possible ordnance effecting System upgrade (i.e. Punished fix). I suspect if and when we see GUNBOAT it will have a ready made title as well that simulates the xD title but gives out an ion token with a successful primary hit.

Anyway, we are a small but vocal cult following that believe this ship deserves its due because it's a workhorse ship that isn't flashy but is more than just a grunt, space cavalry if you will.

let FFG make the gunboat

maybe it'll get to us faster than the regular boat

aint much of a standard, but I'd be down for any improvement there

Absolutely nothing. It's a dumb looking ship that brings nothing interesting to the table that a bunch of people here are irrationally obsessed about.

Most obsessions are irrational.

It's a mini lambda. The space calf. But with more ordnance.

Mmmm. . .space veal.

It's the mini cooper of x-wing. It's tiny and can't do much, but it made a cult following out of its appearance.

As a former Mini Cooper owner. I take umbrage. I got a 10' Christmas Tree home INSIDE of it. It was so odiously large to park in the city I upgraded to a Smart car.

There are good points for and against the Gunboat. I personally have no nostalgia towards it, but I do really want it in the game for one major reason, Visual Diversity for the Empire's fighters. I am so sick of Tie fighters. I have 15 tie fighters, 6 Tie/FOs and I'll probably get 4 Tie/SF. And you know what, they all look exactly the same(more or less) I would love a ship that functioned as a mid grade fighter(an Imperial Ywing) that didn't have a ball cockpit!

This is the main reason I would love to see the gunboat on the table. I'm kinda tired of flying balls with wings, visually speaking.

OTOH, if the gunboat was actually produced, fully half the threads on these boards would become mute.

So... This game named after a ship from 1977, should have ships from 1999 and 2002, but hoping for a cool ship from the 90's is unreasonable?

..hmmkaayyy

Edit: Besides pointing out how stupid the reasons not to have it are I guess i should also answer to the topics question.

The gunboat, just like the Tie-Avenger and Defender, is a very symbolic ship from the x-wing series, I think all 3 look great and are among the empire's best looking ships. We did get the defender (and its awesome fixes), and there are now 2 prototype tie-advanceds so maybe there is no room for the finished version avenger.

But it would be awesome if they would add the very different gunboat that can surely have its unique place in this game.

I sure am glad to see another thread that mentions Gunboats. Sure is good publicity. Maybe FFG will eventually take notice :D

I honestly think it comes from the fact that the Gunboat was the easy mode of the Tie Fighter game. In a game where you had no shields and struggled to stay alive from enemy attacks, this beefy shield and hull'd thing made all the people too young to play the harder ships feel safe and enjoy the game. That nostalgic urning has turned to a deep need.

You couldn't choose what ship you flew..

What cool ship is that? I thought we were talking about the gunboat.

Did someone say gunship?

It's a meme. A symbol of undying, if dubious hope of players that one day FFG will make it happen: create a non-TIE ship for the imps, that will make ordnance work for them and look good.

The best analogy that I can find that explains the gunboat and what it does is this website:

YUP...

What's so awesome about the Gunboat?

That's like saying what's si awesome about Bacon.

Seriously, the XG-1 Alpha Class "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat is the bacon of the Imperial Navy. All of those poor Imperial players simply haven't been able to enjoy a proper breakfast for the past four years without it.

I'm convinced that the only reason FFG haven't released it so far is because they haven't worked out how to fit the ship's full name onto a maneuver dial. But now we have the plastic dials with the little ship symbol - problem solved!

Also, good to see you back on the X-Wing forum Norsehound!

FFG releases the friggin' gunboat. Day+1. "Is the Gunboat Broken?"/"Pls Nerf gunboat"

This Gunboaty thing wont die, ever!

Well, yes. Of course if it's released, we'll see "plz fix/plz nerf" topics, alongside a plethora of build/list/pilot/ability/tactics discussion.

That's the great thing about the Gunboat; one way or another, we'll NEVER stop talking about it.

EVER.

In fact, the discussion is a bit like BREXIT from a remain supporter's point of view.

Gunboat Fan: "we really want to stay in the EU, and we should discuss the implications and potential reprecussions for leaving!"

Gunboat Hater: "Shut up already."

Gunboat Fan: "Er... no?"

It isnt "awesome", it' just different. It's an imperial fighter that isnt a tie, instead being related to the imperial shuttle line.

It's also from the best star wars games ever.

Absolutely nothing. It's a dumb looking ship that brings nothing interesting to the table that a bunch of people here are irrationally obsessed about.

This is soooooo confusing when you're used to just skimming the avatars. :D.

Had a good game last week with my favorite Wave 1 list and now I'm thinking about this game again, so here I am. Didn't know I was missed.

Another reason to take the Gunboat I can think of is that there are/were very few attack 2 ships with cannons built into them, so Autoblasters don't really have a good platform. If you don't like HLCs on your gunboats, you can fly them in a wall of almost uncancellable damage while they're packing the hardly used autoblasters. Until you close, you can fire off concussion missiles.

GUNBOAT title

Barrage attack volley!!!!

You may attack with a (missile) upgrade, (cannon) upgrade and primary attack, reducing all attacks by one die.

We needs you, GUNBOAT!

Third is gameplay. I may be removed from the game for several waves, but I still don't see the Empire having a tanky small-ship cannon carrier of their own. Both new TIE Defender options basically mess with Imperial small ships that can carry a Heavy Laser Cannon, and I think this is what the Gunboat could do.

Aaaaand that gives you an Imperial B-Wing, or a small Lambda shuttle. I would rather a Gunboat than the TIE Punishest, for nostalgia and aesthetic reasons as well. But FFG has painted themselves into a corner here.
