Looking For a Specific Kind of Game....

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I play and love X-Wing, Imperial Assault, and Space Cadets Away Missions.

But a friend of mine is looking for a minatures game that is medieval, but doesn't have spells, demons, or almost-naked women. Not something that is too heavy like a Warhammer type game, something more in the difficulty level od the three games I play.

Any suggestions?

This one? I appreciate the recommendation but that looks as boring as all get out!

No. Trying to figure out how to do pics.

Mice and Mystics is fun. :)

Shadows Over Camelot maybe?

Song of blades and heroes is a quick, light game that can be tailored to whatever kinds of forces you want to play with.

Looks interesting.

I don't have any experience in any minatures games other than the ones I mentioned in the OP. So with these you buy a rule book, and then buy the figures separately? No starter core box?

While it has no spells, demons or almost naked women, MidEvil ( https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/15738/midevil ) is a miniature game with skeletons set in medieval times. The setting is heavily inspired by Army of Darkness and it's pretty easy to pick up and play.

Can't speak to the others, but song of blades and heroes is a generic ruleset that is meant to be played with whatever miniatures you want. It includes rules for creating stats for your figs yourself. So, yes, in the case of SoBaH, you download the free rules and then get whatever miniatures you want to use for it.

Mice and Mystics could be compared to a slightly simpler version of Imperial Assault in a way.

Look it's hot in the medieval times the women are just trying to stay cool, oh it fine when us guys go topless but heaven forbid the women wear a bikini top.

I play and love X-Wing, Imperial Assault, and Space Cadets Away Missions.

I don't think there really are any. Most of the historicals (i.e. actually based on real history, so not including magic) are heavy, small-press, and not widely played.

If you want a minis game that's commonly played and light, it's probably going to include magic and demons and stuff, and it's not unlikely that there will be some relatively scantily clad ladies in the artwork.

What's the problem with magic and demons?

(Scantily clad ladies I can kind of understand, they do get on my nerves a bit from a realism perspective, though not enough to stop me playing an otherwise good game)

Any thoughts on HeroScape? Definitely light and also discontinued  but still fairly actively played. High quality prepainted miniatures and game boards are available for a variety of settings; superheroes, D&D, classic medieval, etc.

I think what you are looking for is SAGA. It's medieval and has a lot of different type of lists. There isn't one particular company to get models from, but there are a number of companies that make 28mm stuff. If you want to spend more for great minis, there are those. If you want to be cheap for OK minis, you can get a lot of sales from companies like Black Tree Design. It won't break the bank for getting a warband together. I understand it's pretty popular with the old school historical types. The rules aren't too complicated.

I've not played it, but I have a bunch of friends that have. They enjoy it.

Not exactly what you want but hopefully it will help:

Zombicide : Black Plague

It's got awesome miniatures. It's a cooperative survival game, very fun and light on rules. board looks awesome when setup. It has zombies but not specifically demons. It DOES have magic, but the core game has only one "wizard" type character and you can easily just remove the "spells" from the equipment deck and use bows and crossbows instead of the magic. (IMO the magic doesn't actually NEED to be there, since you have bows and arrows, and crossbows and bolts, which both ALSO function as ranged attacks).

Now if you remove the "Gandalf" type character, you'll only have 5 people in the core box, but the game is scalable so you can play with only 4 if you want, or really any number. There are also TONS of extra character packs you can buy for it so you can TRULY customize the types of games you want to play. It's really a TON of fun.

Here's some of the mini's painted (a lot of these are from extra packs and some are from the kickstarter)

You didn't specifically say the figure scale but based on those games we'll go with one to one skirmish. Not aware of any complete out of the box games but.....

There is a free set of wargames rules on the Tyneside wargames club site.

You could probably use tokens if you didn't want to go to the expense of buying figures straight off the bat. Or have a nose around the TMP medieval pages.

Lots of info on the latter.

OK....Saga is Dark Ages. Does that count? Or is he looking for something with knights and such? Skirmish or large army wargame? I know there are a ton of 15mm wargames out there.
