Evidence of the changing meta - the death of torp u-boats

By acidReign, in X-Wing

Just taking a look at some the current vassal league data, now escrowed into list juggler. Out of 100 games, 150/200 lists are entered.

Some interesting quantitative observations:

  • Out of 150 reported lists, there are ZERO 2 or 3 torp u-boat builds. I define this a list of having a contracted scout with deadeye and a torpedo. There is one list with a single torp u-boat.
  • Rebels are coming back. Not roaring back, but coming back none the less. Stresshog is used in 6 of the 150 lists.
  • Quite a lot of dengaroo out there. 17 of 150 lists. Even more popular than palp aces at 12 lists.
  • Lots of imperial veterans, too numerous to count. 22 lists with vessery, 7 with ryad.

Some interesting qualitative observations:

  • A guy we all know and love, Paul Heaver, is running an anti-dengaroo rebels list with some success, beating one of the top dengaroo players this week.
  • Lots of people practicing for gencon. Likely to see this meta roll into gencon in my non-expert opinion.

Whats the anti-dengaroo?

Biggs Darklighter + R4-D6 + Integrated Astromech

Wes Janson + Veteran Instincts + R3-A2 + Integrated Astromech

Corran Horn + Veteran Instincts + Fire-Control System + R2-D2

Whats the anti-dengaroo?

I'm guessing Wes is in there. Maybe some regen.

Better question would be "how is it anti dengaroo"

If they have recspec, Wes can't stop the over locked chain

Stops Torps i guess?

Very effective agains the OCR4 version, less against the now less popular rec spec version.

I guess I've usually seen RecSpec/R5P8 or Something else/OCR4. I don't think I've ever seen RecSpec/OCR4 because it's redundant unless you're running into Wes. Even if that was the case, though, it's still decently solid because it prevents the Plasma Torpedo intro and makes it awkward for Dengar to use his revenge shot.

The only dengaroo build I remember brought to my local grouo's attention involved recspec ptl Eu unhinged feedback manny running around with Dengar lw zuckus OCr4 counter measures with torps and stims/dampeners

Or something to that effect

I just assumed it was standard despite redundancies

Who's the top dengaroo player he beat?

Who's the top dengaroo player he beat?

The guy that invented it, Bryan England.

I'm not convinced by the data. I think it has more to do with people being bored with Triple Scouts than it has to do with the list being weak against the current meta. I think a league setting is much more low-key than a premier tournament, so you can expect people to take some fun stuff and leave the top-tier stuff out for a game or two. This is especially true for people who are finished with the tournament season and have no more tournaments to attend.

im with Budgernaut. Palpaces atleast require you to have some flight skills because if you try to joust with them they will dodge 1 attack but the 2nd or 3rd could easily get through. Uboats literally just point in the general direction the enemy is, 1fwd, barrelroll backwards, wait....wait....ok theyre in range3 fire.

So...bloody...boring...

Less competitive meta with regionals ending. That is also a contributing factor.

I don't know if Vassal league data is that relevant. The stakes are much lower in it, so people are much more likely to fly what they think is fun.

That doesnt work with uboats, hehe

Yeah, that's not only Anti Dengaroo, but it's the list that Dan Hars took to two back to back Regionals wins!

Eh, I didn't "invent" Dengaroo. Some early version was suggested by Franzen. Jeff changed it, added CM (genius), and continued to work on it. I invented the version that I fly, which version I would like to believe is the best, but the facts don't lie. Jeff's version has had far more success, so what do I know. It is fully a Rook thing.

Paul whupped me. It still stings. :P

Ah ok, sorry for the inaccuracy. Heard it from others on vassal.

You make a solid point, hard to argue with that. With gencon around the corner though, people are taking practice somewhat seriously. Also, season 2 of the vassal league, i notice a lot of people being very competitive now.

Also, if I was scheduled to play someone who is "x-wing famous" i would bring my best list and my A game.

Well, I'll admit that I'm in the bottom tier, so I don't think it's too competitive where I am. I don't know, though. Only faced one opponent so far.

Quick scan of list juggler indicated the last few larger tournaments (more than 40 players), only a couple of triple scouts show up in top 16.

As if it's something to be happy about though.

Acewing returns, and we've lost yet another bastion against the PS8+ menace

Is there anything about this game you don't hate?

You know, dials, arcs, pokerfacing opponents who try to predict and outsmart. Blocks, range control.

And then there's higher-ps reposition and a tokenstack.

The less generic pilots are used, the less the game cares about dials and predictions. And now we return to the times, when generic pilots are used less often than named ones and in most cases are taken ONLY with a specific unique upgrade card (palp, stressbot)
