Do you find the Gank artwork... too Cheesy?

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Is the new FFG gank look too outdated and cheesy compared to the older more interesting and timeless look?

Sure, the newer look is tough and cool, actually kind of kickass, but does it scream "EXTREME!!! in an over-the-top commercial voice and feel more like a 90`s comic book and Deathstroak than Star Wars?

... I can`t decide if I love the cheese and if it is just right or too much.. I can`t decide which I like more at the moment. What do you think?

I thought they appeared in Dark Empire first... now I learn they were in the movies?

I'm pretty sure those are Photoshops...

Unless you knew that and were being sarcastic; my sarcasm detector is faulty at the best of times, so over the internet it doesn't really work at all.

Not sure what your measurement for "extreme" is, but the newer artwork seems pretty tame to me. But, I mean, I grew up playing RIFTS. So let's just say that my bar for "EXTREME" is pretty high.

Of course that's photoshop. Nope, didn't fall for that at all... :D

Well can you blame me? Could have been George Lucas stealth-editing them in just before the sale. :)

Hey, thanks for editing in the Dark Empire pics, those will always be the one true Gank Killer look for me.

The newer work makes me think of Deathstroke.

Other than the design of the helmets (some kind of robot potato and an over-enthusiastic morion for the older ones and skull-faced helmets for the FFG art) the actual design is pretty much the same. Ignore the coloration for a moment, and compare the general shape of the chest/shoulder armor on all five Gank, and it's mostly the same. They all have some kind of utility belt and holsters, it looks like they all have armor from their knees down, and from their elbows down. It's kind of hard to make any particular details in the frame from the comic, seeing as the entire thing is in varying shades (all of them awful) of green.

I guess the only thing that's really different from the older art and the newer art is they lack the Conspicuous Hosing cybernetic implants (7,000 credits, rarity 6, grants the user a conspicuous hose for others to boggle at and potentially cut in a fight).

Well, the helmet shape tells you something about the head shape. And for my tastes the new look is a bit too anthropomorphic. I know that crtain very vocal people here want all their aliens human-shaped, but I'm not one of them.

Agreed. I like my aliens to look properly alien. Ganks/cyborgs included.

"Gank are powerfully built, carnivorous bipeds with fur ranging in color from golden yellow to a mix of dark brown to red. Their snarling and beady visages and beady eyes give them a dangerous, predatory appearance." -- Lords of Nal Hutta p. 95.

Sounds suitably alien to me. The guy in figure one probably has extensive implants in his head, probably some kind of cyber brain/sensory package.

I prefer the new artwork

Umm.. Why not have both? If they (gank) are so into cybernetic conversion, why can't some choose to look like they have a rugby ball for a head, while some want the supervillian cliche.

Some will even have spider-legs like Maul or Grievous.

The newer work makes me think of Deathstroke.

I was going to say, someone at FFG is a big fan of Arrow .

What disappoints me about the artwork isn't how "extreme" or derivative it is. It's how much it's lacking in diversity. It's supposed to be a species that has fully embraced cybernetics. With cybernetics, you can do so much modification. Your own body becomes something like a YT freighter. You can mix and match and mod the crap out of yourself. So why isn't there a greater variety? They shouldn't be looking like bubbleheads or Slade Wilson, or anything in particular. They should just look like all kinds of different things.

I don't like either one.

The old ones feel too cheesy and the new ones feel too... mainstream?

Anyway, I would have preferred something a bit more alien and modern, but still frightening.

To me the old ones simply don't look scary in the least, and the new ones just look like a human in a suit.

So, we can all agree on daft punk then?...

Yes because those Ganks are harder, better, faster, stronger.

I like the new stuff. Need some pictures of what they look like without the armor, although I suppose I'm just setting myself up for disappointment there.

I know that this guy is supposed to be a Defel, but I always pictured the Gank as looking like this...

Just like Jawas, Tuskers and Kubaz, they look like what you want them to look like under there! With a few hints from the writers, the rest is up to you :)

I like the new artwork. The Ganks from the Dark Empire comics were based on how Cam Kennedy and other 2000AD artists draw anything cyborg-ish. Which is to say a lot of weirdly shaped spheres mushed together.

The skull face is, admittedly, a bit Mountain Dew-drinking video gamer-chic but I think it's pretty cool overall. Sort of a fantasy "evil knight" take on Star Wars' obsession with medieval helmet designs (see the Mandalorians, stormtroopers, et. all) and weapons.

I'm sorry, I look at these pictures and just see the blue brothers in Star Wars. Not that it couldn't be an awesome game. "It's 106 parsecs to Alderaan, we got a ship full of fuel, half a pack of deathsticks, we're in deep space, and we're wearing dark visors. Hit it."

Well...

Now I want to see a fan film recreating Blues Brothers with Han and Chewy in the Falcon.

Mostly for the scene where the Falcon is flying through a star base bazaar smashing through all the shops as two TIE fighters chase them.

I'm not sure which one I like better. There's something to be said for mysterious and frightening, but I don't think either artwork covers those. One is just mysterious, and the other is just frightening.

I do think the suits of the older version are more 'old school Star Wars' but I am partial to skull helmets. So maybe a blend of the two?
