Old Teroch speculation

By churchwarden, in X-Wing

So... With wave 9 previews being released now i thought it would be fun to try to guess this fang fighter pilots ability....keeping in mind the powers that be mentioned there would be a direct counter to u boats this wave and we havent seen it yet. I think this guy is the answer.

My guess is something like this.

At the beginning of the combat phase if you are in range one of an enemy ship it discards any (focus) tokens attached to it.

What your guess??

we already have Palob and Jax doing similar

that would be really powerful. combined with the title, he could just charge into range 1 and laugh at his opponents token-less ship. before nuking it, of course.

The text on the card that we can read is:

At the

you m

Range

it, disca

You don't "discard" tokens, you "remove" them (see: Palob, Wes). You "discard" upgrade cards (see: Boba Fett crew).

While that seems to be the more common usage of "discard" there are abilities related to tokens that use the word. Garven and Porkins both mention discarding tokens. The Conner Net and Stygium Particle Accelerator FAQ entries both mentioning discarding tokens as well.

This could be a defensive ability, ie discard a damage card, face up or face down who knows. Maybe at the start of the activation phase you may add "something" (No idea what), if you do, discard it.

So... is this some informed confirmation that it is "Teroch" rather that "Teacher"?

Not sure where everyone got "Teacher" from, because it's pretty clearly not Teacher in the Wave 9 preview article. Teroch makes sense for a Mandalorian fighter, and it looks right in the picture.

I infer that the card will read as follows:

At the WINTER OF YOUR DISCONTENT,

you mAY TARGET ANY ENEMY SHIP AT

Range 1-3. ROLL 7 ATTACK DICE. IF ONE HITS

it, discaRD THE TARGET SHIP'S PILOT CARD INTO A FIRE.

not into the fires of mount doom?

underpowered, overpriced garbage

Of course you'd think so, its RNG based. :D

that's just Mandalorian for "never works"

You're making the mistake of looking at the card, not the base insert (where 'Teacher' can be clearly seen).

Umm ... zooming in that clearly doesn't say "Teacher" and looks a whole lot like "Teroch." It only has 6 characters in that word. "Teroch" is 6 characters; "Teacher" is 7.

Wanna bet a new ship on it? If it says teroch u buy one and send it to me. If it says teacher i buy one and send it to u. If it says neither we both face-palm and forget this whole discussion?

I'm 99% sure it was on display at UKGE and said Teacher, but I might be misremembering that.

Anyway, the only thing I can be reasonably certain of is that the range mentioned will be 1 - because the original teaser article mentioned that 'range 1' was mentioned 4 times, and it's been seen so far in three places - the title, Fenn, and almost certainly fearlessness. Unless Kad Solus's ability is more than what's already visible - and I doubt it, that's already a very solid ability - then Old T* will be referencing range 1.

Again, I don't see how you could interpret this as "Teacher." The last character is clearly an "H."

I wouldn't say I could discern anything 'clearly' from that image but I do agree it looks more like Old Teroch than Teacher.

Guys, it's Teroch.

Now, please, continue guessing what the card says. It's something I am terrible at and rely upon the community to assuage my anxiety until the spoilers are released...

The "it, discard" of the ability has me flabbergasted. I would have expected a "you may discard", but having a straightaway discard ruins every attempt at me figuring out the ability.

I figure it must have some benefit to flying into your enemy's firing arc. The article mentioned 3 cards that reward you for flying into enemy firing arcs, but we only know of 2 (Fearlessness and the title), and the other is not Solus or Rau. So it must be Old Teroch. I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be, though.

That's my problem too. The only things that are discarded normally are damage cards and upgrades. I can't come up with any reasonable way to make sense out of discarding an opponent's damage cards, and the Protectorate Starfighter doesn't make sense as a support ship repairing allies. That leaves me with discarding upgrades, which would be extremely powerful unless severely restricted or with a drawback like self-damage.

At the ( beginning )( end ) [of the] ( Activation )( Combat )( End ) [phase]

you may [choose one] ( friendly )( enemy ) [ship at]

Range [1](-( 2 )( 3 )) [and] ( choose one ) OR ( assign one ) ...

(face-up damage card)

(face-down damage card)

(evade token)

(focus token)

(blue target-lock token)

(red target-lock token)

(stress token)

(ion token)

(tractor beam token)

... (assigned to)( token/card to )

it, discard [that] ( token )( card ) ( at the (beginning)(end) of the ) ( Combat )( End ) [phase]

Sorry if that is confusing..

I'm thinking there are number of ways this could go: Old Teroch is either discarding a token/card from an enemy ship OR giving a temporary buff to a friendly ship, which is discarded at the end of some subsequent round.

Thoughts?
