Shadows and Dust

"Great Tok" Kellen looked deeper into the structure, unsure of what awaited them in it's depths. "We should take comfort that if the force field lasted this long then the rest of the structure is sound."

Garon set Tok down with a strained grunt. He looked to Xermis then to the direction of the temple.

I sensed a calling to the temple. I think it's the same kind of feeling I got the last time I was sent on some blasted rock hunt.

Garon said no more about his experiences with Lightsaber Crystals and it wasn't wise to pester an angry Besalisk.

Much like the archway, the entry corridor is built tall, taller than a Cerean's crown, and wide enough for two Besalisk to walk side by side. It does not appear to be structurally unsound, simply old and well-worn. The only light is the natural sunlight coming in from the outside. The passage continues on into the darkness for some distance. No other passages appear to branch away from it.

"Well, how bloody bout that, I think that old carving above the button says Press to enter... seems I was right! It's old writing though, heck it's at least 10 millennia before even our time."

"We should watch our steps," Ren-Do intones in his deep voice. "We could expect old booby-traps, local wildlife or even something more exotic and dangerous in here."

As he speaks, he gets out a set of goggles, slides them over his elongated cranium and over his eyes. He sets the goggles for low-light operations and then unclips his lightsaber from his belt. He ignites his weapon, uncomfortably aware of the fact that the crystal inside has been fractured. Holding the lightsaber high to light the way he proceeds carefully into the building.

"If any of you sharp-eyed young fellows could lead the way with me I would appreciate it," he says softly as he walks inside.

"Alright, thats a bloody dark hole to be walking into, lets get it over and done with then." As Rin steps through the door into the cool dark passage he feels a shifting in the force. There is power in these walls, but it feels dampened somehow. Centuries of dust shift and swirl across the floor as new feet enter this domain. There are intricate carvings on the walls, but it all seems decorative, not writing... Its quiet in here

It would have been quiet, were it not for The loud slapping steps and an ungraceful Besalisk. For someone who had such precision with every blow he dealt, Garon was frightfully uncoordinated outside of physical confrontation. But Garon ignored any looks or gestures thrown his way. He knew the kind of sentient he was. The only person who knew is strengths and weaknesses as well as himself was long dead.

With a heavy exhale, Garon pushed thoughts of Hakkar aside. It didn't server him to dwell on the past. But try as he might, the image of a maimed Whipid came unbidden to his mind.

He decided it was better to distract himself from his own thoughts. "Hey Ren. You seem to be the smartest one here. Have ya figured out what sort of place this was and who built it?"

"Here, let me go in ahead a bit," Tok says, adjusting the scanner goggles over his eyes and waiting a moment for them to take effect. "The passage goes up a little ways and then splits to the left and right."

The Gotal sees a completely alien texture on the wall and reaches out to run his fingers across it. As soon as he does, the familiar buzzing he's come to associate with the Force bores into his head. Reflexively he pulls his hand back to cover his ears, but as soon as he takes his hand off the wall the infernal noise is gone.

Moving a few meters forward he touches the wall again and is greeted with the same.

He pauses for a moment and thinks.

"Wait a second, I want to try something," he says to his compatriots.

He jogs back toward the entrance and touches the wall again. Sure enough, the buzzing is there, but at a much lower intensity. Just as he thought.

"There's definitely something in here for you all," he says, striding back toward the gathered ancient Jedi. "It's going to hurt, but I think I can help lead you to it."

He retakes the lead walking toward the fork in the tunnel and lays his hands on both sides, determining which direction the increasingly painful noise should lead them.

Seeing the others entering the structure, Sonya stops mentally going through forms and follows. "Tok is leading the Jedi. An interesting development, this is."

"I'll join you Tok," Kellen said as he walked into the ancient structure just behind Tok. "I've got pretty keen senses and I think my connection to the Force is returning...though some light would be useful." Kellen ignited his lightsaber and the faint light filled a small bubble around him, washing the nearby walls with an eerie blue.

Kellen felt his breath catch and stop. His eyes closed and the hum of his blade which seemed to grow louder filled his ears.

Kellen forced his breath out of his mouth and a deep inhale through his nose as he pulled the Force in the temple though him then pushed it back out.

The loud hum stopped and he opened his eyes - and he could feel the Force flowing though him again not quite normally but well enough.

He could see his fellow Jedi were having similar problems.

"Something is resisting our presence..." Kellen said as he raised his lightsaber higher to get a better view of the hallway they were in.

As the others progress inside the temple, Xaramis follows on behind. The internal corridor is restrictive, claustrophobic even, and within seconds he already wants to return to the broad skies and open ground outside. Not that the option exists of course - they have to head inside - but even so, Xaramis finds himself yearning for it. He pauses in the doorway for a brief moment as the others head in, reflecting that if this is to be his last view of the outside world, it's a good one - the landscape carrying on for miles towards a sky turned blazing red by the oncoming sunset. Then he looks inside, giving it a decidedly distasteful look. Ah well, nothing to be done.

He turns back inside the temple. Looking to see how he can gain some room, he decides to check the vertical on the high ceiling of the temple. As the others ready themselves just inside the hall, he leaps up to see how far he can reach within the doorway. He sees the second button on the keystone, this one inside the building, and catches the eye of Ren-Do with a cocky grin - time to show the scholar what you can manage if you put down the books for a while. He jumps, just reaching the button, and slapping it. As he drops, however, he is conscious that something else is dropping rather faster - an ominous red energy field. Even as he lands - admittedly, very gracefully - it closes over the doorway with a loud snap of ozone that causes the whole party to look round. Xaramis considers the field for a moment, then looks back to consider the range of accusatory faces.

"It wasn't me," he attempts to cover. It doesn't really work, as the others turn away, their faces varying shades of amused to amazed at his idiocy. Xaramis contents himself with lurking at the back as the others finish their preparations. He sees Kellen draw his lightsaber from his belt. Catching his eye, Xaramis draws his own blade, thrumming the motor once, to test its' function. The Jedi responds by igniting his own blade, casting light over the hallway, and a single eyebrow raised in amusement. Xaramis shakes his head, contenting himself again with sticking to the back in silence. Besides, he's feeling a little off in here - his usual charm, his way with people, seems to have vanished with his crossing the threshold. Not a permanent problem, he's sure - a round of drinks on whatever passes for a cantina on this planet will bring them all back round to him - but nonetheless very disconcerting.

Ren-Do doesn't say anything when Xaramis clumsily activates the force field, shutting them off to the outer world, he merely shakes his head with slight disappointment. "Actually, this happenstance might be advantageous for us given our current objectives," he intones, his archaic accent thick. "We would, after all, prefer not to be set upon from the rear by any of the native fauna we have yet to encounter. Having said that, perhaps we should make sure we can open this force field again at a future date before pursuing our sensitive Gotal friend up ahead?"

He lifts his lit lightsaber higher. The pale blue light from the damaged weapon falls on the wall. The Cerean notices that it is covered with strange scratchings that seem random, rather than part of some sort of a decoration. "Those are curious markings to be sure. Look entirely random rather than decorative. I think we should be mindful during our time down here. Something may have scratched the walls here, and it may well be hostile to outsiders such as our little expedition."

"Bloody fool Xaramis, playing around like some kid at their first meeting of the clans... this isn't some game!" Dam kids gonna get us all killed. Rin looked up and down the corridor, this was a death trap if ever he saw one, getting out of here was not going to be simple...

"Hey Ren-Doh what do ya make of these walls, those scratches are everywhere, claws?"

When she enters the corridor, Sonya feels a change. Everything seems slightly heavier and a little more removed, as if her senses have become dulled.

Have I completely lost my connection to the Force? Some of the others seem to be regaining theirs after their hibernation.

"By resisting our presence, do you mean interfering with our connection to the Force?"

Watching how things are playing out, she drops back to the rear of the group and ignites her lightsabre.

"You look like you could use some light back here Xaramis. Good thinking keeping anything coming at us from outside."

"I reckon these look like the claw marks of a small tree climbing animal, something like a possum. I've see it a lot planets dominated by smaller mammals... but they wouldn't be tough or sharp enough to even scratch stone, what the heck is going on here?" Rin pauses for a moment to run his hands across the wall, taking in the scale of the damage "whatever it is, there's a lot of them... or they have been here a long long time."
