So has there been any clarity on this yet now that some players have the ships?
Collision Detector
Hey all slightest of Necros but it seems that we may still not have an official answer on this yet?
Just my 2 cents on the topic, I just read the rules for obstacles, now correct me if I missed something but all it tells you is that when you manoeuvre through an obstacle you trigger its effects.
What it does not say (that many here seem to think it does) is that this is the only, exclusive means to trigger the effects of the obstacle. The rules were written prior to tractor beams and collision detectors so it makes no mention of them and refers to the only way at the time to trigger them when the rules were written. The rules still state what happens when obstacles are triggered but it says nothing about restrictions to what can trigger them.
No official clarification yet.
So, this is almost as good as Dash's ability? Just as long as you dont MOVE onto/through an obstacle first (which will either stress you with debris, or make you skip your action step with roids) you are free to b-roll and boost all over the ****ers?
A PTL Keyan with Engine Upgrade can go willy nilly all over obstacles, and as long as he doesn't begin/end on an asteroid, he can attack, yes?
Would this example below be correct? And because these are not maneuvers, there is no rolling for damage.
I'd say yes. Once your action phase has started you can't be made to skip it, so CD makes you function similarly to Dash. You do still roll for the roids and if you go over them early somehow (e.g. Lando giving you an action) you'd lose your action step, but as long as you get on there with an action and don't end up on there, you're fine.

Cop that Ryad! You K-Turning %*#@*!
This will be another major FAQ update, with included flow chart, which is fine.
But what do folks think FFG was thinking about with the ignoring of crits bit? Did they really want to nerf debris for any ship with the correct slot? Or were they not careful in their wording, and it was only supposed to impact ships doing boosts/barrel rolls?

I think it was intended. The amount of competition in that slot makes Collision Detector really not that amazing because you're giving up FCS, Sensor Jammer, Baffles, Accuracy Corrector, ATC, etc etc etc.
So, tried farlander out with PTL + CD + Engines. It was awesome. Used Collision detector twice to great effect. As far as I understand, asteroids dont cause you to roll for damage when b-roll or boosting because you are not doing a maneuver.
Went against:
Basic Scout with Protons and then outlaw tech
Manaroo same as scout but with plasmas
Kad Solus + Fearlessness, AT, Title
1) Manny is off screen, delivering focus to Kad. Kad could have went the other direction, then Farlander could have just stayed behind Norra for Biggs protection. Kad went the other way, leaving Farlander and Collision Detector to do its thang!
2) A nice b-roll, boost, into range 1. Scout can fire plasmas at Biggs or range 1 on Farlander. Chose plasmas on Biggs. Took 2 shields from Biggs. Farlander, Norra and Biggs got Scout down to 3 hull remaining (a crit for Direct Hit from Biggs!). It would die next turn as Farlander does a 2K and gets a range 1 shot.
A few turns later. Scout was killed. Farlander just one shotted Kad, range 1, PTL for boost and TL. Got hit, crit crit crit. He got one evade, blank blank.
1)Manny does a 2-sloop, outlaw tech gives her a focus. Biggs 1 straights. Norra turning around, still stressed.
2) Farlander 2 hard turns. Boosts to try and get a shot, but out of arc and still range 2 of manny's plasmas and range 2 of Biggs.
3) Collision detector lets me barrell roll onto an asteroid. Putting me in range 1 of manny, but more importantly, range 1 of biggs.
Manny had 4 hull left after this round. Biggs had 1 hull left and still had IA. Norra untouched, and Farlander still ahd 2 shields left. Game was called by opponent.
The one negative of Collision Detector, I found out with that last Farlander b-roll is that you have no choice. I thought I could make the b-roll, but my corner ended up clipping it. Normally, you can then decide to do another action, but with Collision detector, because you can do it, you are stuck on the rock. Worked out in this case cause of Biggs, but for future games, I gotta be aware that
there is no try, do or do not
You do roll for damage for asteroids, you only ignore the crits as the card says. With debris you won't roll for damage as you ignore crits, but still take a stress.
If you barrel rolled onto an asteroid you shouldn't have shot, due to the effect of asteroids.
Edit: might have read your post too quickly, I think you didn't shoot from an asteroid, but still, you roll for the damage, you just ignore any crits rolled.
Edited by Goseki1Correct. Collision Detector isn't a license to completely ignore obstacles.
FFG will need to FAQ this, but until they do, RAW should be followed.
I dont see why you would roll for damage or suffer effects of obstacles, unless you end up on them in combat phase.
Collision Detector:
FIRST PART: When performing a boost, barrel roll, or decloak, your ship and the manoeuvre template can overlap obstacles.
SECOND PART: When rolling for obstacle damage, ignore all [kaboom] results.
Second part is completely separate of the first part. So MANEUVERING over an asteroid only has a 3/8 chance to do damage, and debris no damage. Even for ships without a boost or barrel can benefit from this upgrade. Like the Lambda shuttle.
From the Rules:
pg.6 "Performing a barrel roll does not count as executing a maneuver."
pg.7 "Performing a boost does not count as executing a maneuver."
pg.14 " When a ship executes a maneuver , if its base or maneuver template overlaps an obstacle token, it executes its maneuver as normal but suffers an effect based on the type of obstacle."
Here is the entire section of barrel roll. (Collision Detector basically just removes the part in red below):
BARREL ROLL
Ships with the *barrel roll* icon in their action bar may perform the barrel roll action to move laterally and adjust their position. To perform a barrel roll with a small ship, follow these steps:
1. Take the [1] maneuver template.
2. Place one end of the template against the left or right side of the ship’s base. The template cannot be placed beyond the front or back edges of the base.
3. Lift the ship off the play surface, then place the ship at the other end of the template. The template cannot be beyond the front or back edges of the ship’s base, and the ship must face in the same direction as before the barrel roll.
- A ship cannot barrel roll if it would overlap another ship or an obstacle token, or if the maneuver template would overlap an obstacle token.
- A ship cannot barrel roll if this would cause the ship to flee the battlefield.
- When a player declares a barrel roll action for his ship, he must also declare whether the ship is barrel rolling to the left or to the right before placing the maneuver template on the play area.
- If a player declares a barrel roll action for his ship and cannot complete the action in the desired direction, he may choose a different direction or a different action entirely.
- Performing a barrel roll does not count as executing a maneuver.
- Large ships barrel roll as described in the “Large Ship” glossary entry on page 13.
Mate, just look at Tractor Beamed Barrel Rolls, which are also not technically a maneuver, but you still can get barrel rolled or boosted onto obstacles and have to roll for damage/receive stress. It is the same here.
I agree with you that the second statement on crits doesn't just refer to when you have barrel rolled or boosted, and still kicks in if you do a normal maneuver over an obstacle, but it is still linked to the first one. If they wanted you to ignore the effects, I'm pretty sure it would say "ignoring the effects of obstacles". Agree it needs an FAQ to provide clarity either way though.
