More elegant language for a more civilized age...

By Baltanok, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

Perhaps I am showing my age, but I seem to be seeing more & more spelling errors, and it is getting under my skin. Particularly, I'm seeing a lot of near-homophones recently, although I do see a fair number of "rouge squadron" style errors as well. So, please, remember that the spellchecker is not perfect.

(As a side note, did rogue squadron come about because someone in lucas-land saw the french translation for ANH, and misread rouge?)

Just something to consider...

I think we have a wonderful community where English may not be a poster's primary and/or first language.

Oh good grief Chalie Brown. Uppercase your proper nouns.

Somehow, "Le Rouge Cinq stending bah!" doesn't ring quite as nicely as "Red Five standing by!" :D (runs....hides)

I rather like "Le Rouge Sept, prĂȘt!" myself.

It's rouge vs. rogue for the most part. I'm not sure why but that one (and accept vs. except) seems to trip up a lot of people.

Simply because neither word is really used with any regularity by people in their everyday lives... But on the flipside, is used a bunch here....

... and the fact that the other word does exist in the english language, means that those pesky AutoCorrects don't fire.

I mean, however jokingly, I've already been openly mocked for the way I post.

... means that those pesky AutoCorrects don't fire...

And when those pesky AutoCorrects go off on your phone and you phail to not-ice what a missy problem. :D

I second the opinion of the OP.

Its versus it's

And people saying "should of" instead of "should have"

I find it quite ironic that when people complain about bad grammar being hurtful to their eyes when they read it or their ears when they hear it they quite often butcher their own complaints with poor grammar themselves.

For the love of baby cheeses, use full stops and don't start sentences with a conjunction. :D

Something, something, casual vs formal writing.

But in seriousness ( see what I did there?? ), while it makes me crazy to read other people's mistakes, I also recognize how easy it is to get on a roll--especially when posting from a phone--and miss either typos or autocorrect mistakes. Hell, I do it myself all the time, so I try not to get too wrapped around the axle when I see it in others' writing, despite my own grammar-Nazi tendencies.

The worst part is how your / you're , they're / their , and its / it's autocorrect into each other. D:

The one that bugs me no end is my iPad constantly autocorrecting "is" to "us". As if I didn't want to type what is probably the most common word in the English language.

Is it a more civilised age?

I saw "Lightening strikes the Empire State Building" on my Google News feed the other day. It came from the Wall Street Journal.
