The FFG has once again become heedless to his games

By foxmul84, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I would ask one thing: it would be possible, according to you, ask FFG a correction of the new miniatures, to return to the original scale (the one with which the game is started)?

I can understand that many like "the best detail", but the latest miniatures are REALLY out of scale... HUGE!
One of the forces of Descent is the way the game table is able to conjure up an epic adventure in miniature... but to see heroes and villains giants that really should be is smaller, well... it's sad!

As for me, I do not think I will buy the latest expansion... I feel betrayed!

What do you think?

Same here !

I would like a game to stay in the same size all along, and they will do better detailed miniature on the next game, or the V3, in many years !

I bought EVERYTHING that is so far out in Italian... I just miss the last 3 monster/hero packs, the last 2 small expansions and the last 3 lieutenants... waiting anxiously for their leaving the Italian, but seeing those miniatures so out of scale, well... I feel like they showed me the money in the face! All the money that I have spent so far!

Yes, it's true: the game does not get worse with 5-6 miniatures changed... but worsens its looking good... then WHY change?

This are only speculations, but maybe :

- details

- change of manufactors

- change of way to make them (3d printing ?)

As I've said on multiple occasions, I agree completely. It's not so much that I dislike the new models (in fact, I think that they look great) but they don't fit with the older models, which is incredibly frustrating. I genuinely don't feel like getting the latest Heroes & Monsters Collection entirely due to this - although I probably still will, simply because I really want the Ice Wyrm and the Shades (Ice Wyrm because there's an extremely limited number of Cold monsters, and the Shades because I want to do an all-undead Campaign).

But I really hate that they're doing this. Arvel looks so incredibly out of place, absolutely grotesquely overgrown, larger than the base she stands on, like a half-elf/half-ogre monstrosity, standing heads and shoulders over even orcs and probably the troll figures, too. While the models are nice in and by themselves, it makes the game look hodge-podge, like Frankenstein's boardgame, stitched together in a chinese sweatshop, with models from three different brands.

I realize FFG will probably never comment on this, but I really want to ask someone at the office wtf is up with this.

3D printing is incredibly unlikely. It's just not viable for commercial mass-production like this, and either way, there's no reason to think that this'd result in overgrown models in itself.

Maybe I don't know which troll figures you are referring to, but Arvel comes nowhere near the height of actual Trolls or Bol-Goreth. She is about a head taller than Jain Fairwood, but it's really hard to judge with the bear head on top of her. She looks fine, IMO, but definitely a little large. She is, however, without a doubt, the best looking female mini we have seen thus far. She looks feminine, and well proportioned... much better than Eliza and the SON minis.

Arvel it's not a elf anymore, but a half-giant :P

The problem with 3d printing is that it has an inherent quality problem. An injection moulded part will always be better, that is never going to change. Even if some day printer will achieve the same quality, the price will still favour the mould.

However, I am currently working on some 3d printed Descent upgrades to make the game more organised. By the end of the summer I expect to have tested them all and uploaded them to Thingiverse:)

Anyway I want to stress one thing: the problem is not on the details... it is in SCALE!
But I want to make a question to all of the new scale defenders: ...if the difference matters so little, then WHY in Runebound have redone the minis in the correct scale? The production costs for new pieces are not low... why to do it, if it counts so little?
Do yourself a question and give yourself an answer... with love, the answer you seek is: NO, it does not matter so little... matter so much, and they know it ! :)

Runebound miniatures (center) are comparised with old one (left) and other correct descent miniatures (right)... Runebound minis are in the correct scale, and the details are beautiful!! :)

I can only hope that future expansions of Runebound make out the correct minis for Descent... I already twisted these 4, since in Runebound the scale does not matter so much...

In the coming 4 Runebound expansions have been announced already 3 miniatures of 4 outputs in Descent, 1 of which (Jonas) outputs in the wrong scale... coincidence? :)

I love this game... I hate FFG for what he did to this game... :(

I disagree completely, and wish the figures could have been this detailed before. The new heroes paired up against the new lieutenants really highlights the improviements they've made in their figures.

I'd rather play with a few new amazing figures in our hero group (especially painted where they REALLY pop) than continue with a lesser quality for continuity's sake.

Again, the problem its not the quality, but the scale (I dont complain for better models). They messed (a lot) with the scales with the new heroes and lieutenants , and even beetwen the last heroes and monsters packs you can cleary see the difference in the models scale / proportion . FFG has a awesome reputation for the products quality, but if we are seeing more and more errors in the last releases, something is going very wrong in quality control management.

For a big company, I can only espect a better quality and care with their products (well, we are paying well for that) and it is turning a common problem ( see the poor quality models for heroes in shadows of nerekhal in the past). So, for the love of the gods of Terrinoth, with not take more care with the miniatures production like CoolMiniorNot for example ???

Thanks for the pictures Atom4geVampire. In order to clarify the discussed point, may I bother you to provide us with photos comparing miniatures of heroes sharing a race? I.e. one for the dwarfs, 1 for elves, orcs, etc.

This way we could see and argue more clearly how the change of size makes tings inconsistent. I don't own all the expansions, but Krutzbeck looks like 2x the size of Grisbrand. I remember than Corbin looks huge as well, even if you take into account that he's a bit fat.

Personally, I don't like it when the heroes don't fit their base. When playing it is just awkward if heroes are close together.

From these pictures. Arvel looks oversized, but not completely (Some 15% larger than Syndrael? It is hard to tell with her wolf-head). One-fist bothers me a bit more even though he's an Orc. Nanok looks huge as well, given that he is supposed to be human.
