Coruscant Invitational - format and thoughts

By SaszaPL, in X-Wing

SO, the first System Open Series just finished. I think that even though there were some problems (no live streaming of Coruscant finals) it was a great idea as such. First of all, it took a lot of international interest and people could take part somehow even if not participated personally. Voting for mandatory ships was quite fun. Players were attending tournaments in different countries, looking at how people play and simply socializing. In the end, the idea of mandatory ships. Isn't that fun? There were 8 lists, and they were quite different due to this. And the game seemed more fun, because it is not only about the mastering of your ships now, but also about creating a good working combos and knowing of what your opponent comes with.

I think it is so much more fun to play. Hope that this will be incorporated into some relaxed tournaments or other events of low rank.

I really liked the format. Literally the only significant problem (other than my abysmal performance at Yavin :( ) was the absence of the stream. A minor disappointent on half a year of otherwise excellent events, I look forward to next year's.

Perhaps it's a 'Release Celebration' model, like Magic pre-releases.

A hangar bay tournament where you have to use at least one of the new ships in each list?

That sounds really great! I think it should be somehow supported by FFG, at least in he beginning. I would be so much more motivated to buy Imp Vets immediately after release :P

Honestly, it seemed a little anti-climactic to me. Part of this might have been because I couldn't watch it due to lack of stream, but for all the work these players did to get there, and the expense of flying the players to London on FFG's part, it seemed like 4 games was a little less than one would have hoped for a big titanic clash of System Open Champions. With 3 qualifying games, and the high chance of random bad matchups because of 3 different lists, I felt like it could have been more interesting to extend the event a little bit. You could have done a true Round Robin with everybody playing everybody, then cutting to the finalists. That's still only 8 games, and you get a better judgement of how all the champions stack up against each other.

Easy for me to say, I wasn't playing.

The lack of streaming was a total failure on the FFG's marketing part. It's a pity, but the 186th squadron guys did an amazing job doing the coverage (Big thanks Jesper, James & Alex).

In my opinion, It would be nice to have semi-finals as well (it would allow to reduce the bad matchups effect), but there was no time to do 5 games in one day (4 games took approx. 8h, between 11am - 7 pm). There was no way, that it could start sooner or end later (gates were opened at 10 am and closed at 7 pm).

A true round robin would great idea, but you are not able to accommodate it with other aspects related to such a big event.

Lack of streaming hurt, but I really loved the fact that most experienced players from almost all over the world created so much different lists to go with. That's like pure fun for playing something simply different... I think that it would be so good to get a pre-release like tournaments.
