Unupgraded ships ?

I don't know, pretty much everything has that single upgrade that really makes it sing in stripped-down roles.

CR90A - TRC

CR90B - SW7 or title (depending what you want it to do)

NebB - TRC or Yavaris

GSD - OE

RDR - OE

MC30T - OE

MC30S - OE or TRC

Certainly, people have done the run-naked thing successfully (naked AF-AF-CR90 at Worlds last year), but you're really building for a specific tactic if you're going to be doing that. I think that in most cases it's worth spending the small incremental price increase to put that single upgrade on your almost-naked ship.

All true, however once the points become an issue, using naked ships can be a valid option (and for cheaper ships running naked means less points to opponent once they're destroyed as was already noted).

I think another candidate for running naked is RDR2 in a role of flotilla hunter.

MC30T - OE

in stripped-down roles.

Skycake took out the Calgary regional today by a WIDE margin, with:

ISD-I

(No Upgrades)

GSD-I

- Demo, OE, Engine Techs

Raider-I

- OE Motti

Major Rhymer
Firespray x5

Jumpmaster x2

Totally naked ISD-1.

To me, some of the issue with no upgrade ships is that there are a few upgrades that are either so very cheap (Ordnance Experts) or so very integral (Turbolaser Reroute Circuits) that it's hard to find ships that I would run with no upgrades.

It would have to be one that couldn't take either of those, or one where I am taking it purely to be as cheap as possible and die: CR90B, Raider I.

Otherwise, most ships should really have OE (Glads, Victory, Imperial), or TRC on the rebel side.

I've tried the naked ship list and it can work.

The big takeaway I took from it is variance mitigation.

Ordinance experts, leading shots, TRC's, ETC all help mitigate a roll that has blanks. Paying a few extra points can really pay off in upgrading what your "normal" shot will do.

When I do play a ship with no mitigation I try to keep in mind that the variance swing will be lower than if I had Ord experts... Can still hit big but plan for lower.

My whole thing about naked ships is I enjoy flying them less, so I tend to avoid including them.
