Vassal vs Live Game rule question

By SylinRhyas, in X-Wing

During initial placement of ships, during live games we just make sure the base is no further the range 1 and ignore the nubs. Do we do the same in Vassal or do we make sure the nubs are within range 1 as well?

Same thing as live is what most people do.

Sounds like you are probably doing it wrong playing live games. You might run onto someone that calls you out for doing that on Vassal.

I believe the nubs count as part of the base.

Yeah, the nubs are a part of the base for both set-up and range measurement (I've had shots only be in range because the nubs were in contact with the range ruler...). That said, in casual games, I've never seen anyone call someone on nubs being within R1 for set-up. I've never even seen someone call it in a tournament setting, actually.

The Rules Reference is pretty clear on this:

GUIDES
Each ship’s base has two pairs of movement guides, one pair on the front and one pair on the back.
These guides are ignored for all purposes except executing maneuvers and overlapping obstacles and other ships.
In those cases, the guides count as part of the base.

I've been attacked out of range!

Meh, they were casual games anyway. It's never arisen in tournaments for me.

So since nubs don't count for anything except for exciting maneuvers and overlapping obstacles, that means I don't have to worry about range 1 of the board edge correct? My nubs can go past it on set up.

I probably should have looked there first. Thanks!

Correct. Or at least, that is the most common interpretation.
