[HELP from the community] Designing multiplayer new rules

By PRODIGEE, in CoC General Discussion

Hi everybody,

Like some of you already know, the Cenacle is working on a new form of multiplayer game for CTHULHU LCG. I would like to submit you this form, in a way to test the stuff and popose any changes you judge necessaries. Any return would be fine, just send me an email (MP is fine too)

We defined a new game based on 1 against 3 mecanisms.

Evry players sat in front of the table. Each one of them compete on three stories, each one of those story defended by one and only opponent. The rules used are the normal rules of the game. The scheme we proposed is like this :

prasen10.jpg

Player A face player B in a story, player C in another one and player D in a third.

Only player A and B can commit to the stories they have in front of them. Others players can do the same in the stories they have in front of them.

Everybody can play actions anytime on every part of the table, even on the action windows generated by commitments from other players.

Conspiracies have a particular status. You czan play them from your hand and choose which opponent is able to face you in this conspiracy.

Turn sequence :

1turn : Everybody draw 2 cards and cannot commit to any stories.

Turn 2, active player isable to commit. When he finished his turn, the player on his left starts his own.

Once a story is won, the winner of the card choose another card from it's stoydeck and place it in front of the player who do not won the story. Only exception concern conspiracy, as placement is up to the owner of the card.

In case the rules are fine, we are working on a form of board that we should propose on a pdf. Thank you for your help and don't mind asking me any question.

Looks fine and its possible the same mechanics for three and four players! Interesting!

In the way to play actions maybe something useful is thing about game mechanics of VTES where your hand right player is you predator and the other in the left is your prey. Against they you can play always Direct actions... simply an orientation...

We'll keep in mind your suggestions!

Someone (sorry don't remember the nickname) told me that we can also propose to play Conspiracies like the Plot deck in the game AGOT...

we're collecting every return and will try every proposition !! Once tested, we'll send you the whole rules on this topic!

Hey!

In my point of view, I think that we could follow the second model. Although there are quite a few doubts in my mind with that model. If we are playing as a team, we should be able to see each others cards and talk with our partner, but that would change the model quite reasonably. We would adopt a kind of Magic's Two-Headed-Giant scheme.

I do agree with your point, Santos. The rules of pultiplayer based on team-pairing may need a little tweak to be more fun ...

But what we propose is an alternative format, based on the 1 against 3 format. gran_risa.gif

In that case I agree with your second option:

urn sequence :

1turn : Everybody draw 2 cards and cannot commit to any stories.

Turn 2, active player isable to commit. When he finished his turn, the player on his left starts his own.

Once a story is won, the winner of the card choose another card from it's stoydeck and place it in front of the player who do not won the story. Only exception concern conspiracy, as placement is up to the owner of the card.

Just one minor notice, after the player commits, it starts through his left in order to "counter" commit and use any tricks correct?

There's a chance one player is not challenged for three turns. Something may happen to or between story cards that may put a character at another story outside that turns commit phase. I'm late to responding because I'm still not clear on the rules. An inactive player will likely only throw an event into the fray if it's time to gang up on the guy in the lead. Which is in itself a slowing of the game. More of a head to head singular story concept happening versus the cosmos of the mythos swirling. Still, creative and direct and could work. Nice.

I might not have give you enough clear answers, sorry !

@Ashma Daeva : Totally right for the sense of the turn! But, in fact, the only opponent that might commits to a story you've committed to is the guy who has the story in front of him. The others opponents can't commit, and might only interact via events and Characters/supports actions.

@Johny Shoes : I agree with you on the fact that a guy might not commit in three turn. If he got the lead or anything ... But, likely we've have played it for tests, players speaks and try to have arrangment with someone else, then they betray their arrangement and try something else.

Last game we had last 1 hour, the previous only 20 minutes ... It depens on a lot of stuffs (alliance, ganging..). Maybe it slows the game down, but it's a totally different kind of play, less reactive, more fun and casual (we tested it with people who are playing Vampyr and gave us Ideas ...

While I asked the community to help testing, we're working on a conceptbased on the use of the conspiracies : We have 17 conspiracies right now, and our crew of testers proposed to use it like in the AGOT game : Making a 10 conspiracies decks and use it to interact with the render of stories.

We need now to find a balance in a way not to make it too powerfull, I'll leave you a message soon and propose you the whole rules right after christmas !!

Here we are ... The second version of the rules designed by the french community are now written on a specific english file so you may send us your return and try to play it.

I'd like to thank the dozen people who did send us return and proposition. Thank you very much !!

Hope you'll enjoy and tell us what you think about it :

Thanks, these look really interesting! I hope we'll find an opportunity to give it a try.

So, our final basis multiplayer is now finished, and we start working on a strategik way to play up to 5 players.

We will propose you soon another rules, for a totally different type of play !

Please, keep testing what was proposed and tell us if you enloyed it or not. I hope we will propose something to the community that is going to be really fun to play.
