The new books

By Iskander4000, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

I love to read but don't have the time to read everything I want. What are everyone's opinions of the new books (i.e. everything that's now considered canon)? Which ones are worth reading and which are skippable?

Tarkin is a fairly fun book, especially if you like the idea of Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader running around like a pair of anti-heros chasing a morally ambiguous group of rebels. Also: " SHEEV Palpatine".

Troy Denning's Books are widely considered to be.. bad. The author's writing style has a tendency to get on people's nerves. Your mileage may vary. He currently has out Aftermath and Life Debt .

Star by Star (?) is a young adult book about two teenagers that join up with the Empire just before Alderaan. One is disillusioned and deserts, and winds up with the rebellion, the other stays with the Empire and climbs the ranks. Surprisingly good for a YA novel.

Bloodlines is about Princess (Senator) Leia in the years prior to the First Order making its dramatic appearance on the stage, and about her running for "First Senator" - leader of the Galactic Republic. It adds a nice wrinkle to the previous cannon - what if Luke and Leia didn't go around shouting from the rooftops that they were actually related to the big scary guy in the black armor and cape that choked people to death and blew up planets? What if it just... slipped out? And what would that do to someone's political career? I thought is was very good - haven't read any reviews of it though.

THRAWN IS COMING OUT!

I agree with Biggs. Tarkin was an interesting backstory of the early empire. I listened to bloodlines on audible and really enjoyed it. I just read Aftermath and it was ok, it was not the best written book.

I'll add Rebel Dawn to the list. I read it and enjoyed it. It was not amazing literature, actually it reads very much like a Rebels episode, which makes sense.

I'm in the middle of twilight company and it is good so far. A very different type of Star Wars novel, no Jedi, more of the front line battles. Looking forward to finishing it.

I'm really excited for the Thrawn book.

Thanks guys. I think I'll check out Bloodlines and Tarkin, and if I like what I see I'll go for Rebel Dawn as well. Anyone know if Dark Disciple is worth checking out?

So I just picked up Lords of the Sith just now. Impulse buy (it was on a stand next to the checkout aisle at a grocery store). Will commence reading soon.

THRAWN IS COMING OUT!

Chuck Wendig, not Troy Denning, is the writer of the Aftermath Trilogy (Aftermath, Aftermath: Life Debt, Aftermath: Empire's End (not quite out yet)).

Lost Stars is the name of the YA novel.

I would read Timothy Zahn Thrawn trilogy if I were you. THey are far better than anything Disney can offer you so far. And I'm saying this because I've read them all.

I think you're thinking of Chuck Wendig here.

I tried reading Tarkin, but it was utterly horrid - poorly written and utterly lacking in the character and tension departments.

It made me remember why I stopped reading EU books - they generally suck. Pretty sure I'll never read another SW book after Tarkin.
