He's Coming

Honestly other then the Zhan Trilogy the rest of it could be dumped into the fire and nothing of any real value would have been lost.

What is wrong with you people? Do you hate joy?

I fully realize that the plot of the books may not stand up to rereading it after a quarter of a century and a college education including literary criticism. I read them at the tender age of 16, and I remember both the character and the plot very fondly.

I imagine that some teenagers might get the same joy out of a decent story with the same character, and that makes me smile.

And I read it at around the same age, if not a bit younger, and I found his character infuriatingly written. What's your point? No I don't hate joy, and I would appreciate you not implying that anyone who disagrees with your opinion is apparently some hateful person. You like his character, fine. I thought he was a poorly written piece of shite. Amazing how the world can have varying opinions on things.

My point is, it doesn't have to be about you - or me. You are, as they say, entitled to your own opinion, but frankly, neither your opinion nor mine matter here.

What matters is that teenager watching the rebels episode once it comes out. Maybe at that point you will want to explain to her how wrong she is to enjoy something that you don't, but hopefully you won't?

Also, it's frankly silly to get your knickers in a bunch about Thrawn, whether it's because of books that are decades old or because of an appearance in an episode you haven't seen yet. Either is, take your pick.

Honestly <<<...>>> it could be dumped into the fire and nothing of any real value would have been lost.

The clipped quote above is my feelings of TFA. It's no better than the majority of the EU.

When it comes to TFA they must have done something right , at least in comparison with the prequels.

The prequels are not what I am comparing them to.

We all know a New Hope was better than the sequels. Honestly, they did do better. They made it less action-oriented, and put in the requisite amount of story Star Wars did, back in 77. There are still a whole lot of things I don't know, based on the universe Ep.7 now occupies, as it isn't the post-RotJ I am familiar with, anymore, but that's what several more movies are for, like ESB, and RotJ. The prequels, in my opinion, tried to use too much technology to spiff things up, and it didn't work well, as well as trying to make too many characters relevant (Yoda, Windu, a few others) in a set-up that, to those of us older than 1999 was already wrapped up. I won't just sit here, and harp on prequels, or Hayden Christensen, but I think one of the things TFA did have in its favor was an open expanse to fill, and explore, and questions to which the answers aren't already known. Now that they can't just re-make another movie, like they did here, I'm looking forward to seeing what the next "original" Star Wars movie will show me; I believe they just finished it up, recently.

And even the prequels DID have their moments, just few, and far between. ;) Half of my complaints were always things that I perceived as "wrong", as a lot of their material had been covered differently in the EU, and then Lucas changed a lot of it, but it was his work, so he had the right to, and the lack of surprises, since I had already seen the main trilogy, and knew what they had to lead up to (and Jango Fett, but that's a whole different ball of crap  ). Fortunately for me, I AM a fan of the EU, so I like that, and was overall pleased with TFA, despite feeling like it was Ep.4 v1.5.

As for Thrawn, one other reason I'm happy is because Disney, or whomever, said they were keeping all the EU stuff, and that, if they wanted to, they might reintroduce it. I can see why they wouldn't want to make movies of some of the books (Truce at Bakura, Heir to the Empire, etc.), and also assume they would've had to pay royalties to people like Timothy Zahn, bit if my feelings of "knowing the endiing, before it started" hold any truth, regarding the prequels, these movies would've suffered from the sheer number of people who, like them, or hate them, read all these books. Still, to see them actually follow through, and bring back something I DID like, showing that they really will, gives me hope that some other things are also options.

Actually we don't "all" know New Hope was better. You are stating an opinion, not a fact. I personally enjoy Return of the Jedi the most out of all 3, with Empire coming in 2nd place. And New Hope at 3rd.

Just to clarify, I was replying to what venkelos said directly above my comment, not something you said. In case there was some confusion on who I was replying to. Sorry for not quoting.

I was just trying to be funny :)

(You are all right, ferret.)

Just making sure. People can be weird on the internet when they think you are responding to something they said when you really didn't.

I never got the Thrawn thing. The general concept of a thoughtful villain was fine, even needed; but the execution was lame. Reminded me of those stupid Agatha Christie novels where the detective practically has omniscience throughout.

So I could care less about Thrawn. However, I trust Filoni & team to do the general concept justice, I expect it will be better than the original.

I order them that way, too. Also, everything I say is opinion, so no prob. ;) When I was a kid, Jedi was the first one I saw, and Empire was an accident, on the TV; I actually had to find out that there was a film with a living Obi-Wan, and by then, as I whined with prequels, above, all the surprises were ruined. I mostly just meant that 4 was better, IMO, than much of the prequels were. Your mileage may vary.

AH, compared to the prequels, yes I agree, it's better as a cohesive story. No argument there. I thought you were stating a common opinion among many fans regarding the original trilogy that "Ep 4 is demonstrably and factually the best one of the 3 movies." To which I disagree. But compared to the others, from a structure standpoint, I agree. Though I'm sure others are out there that feel the prequels are their favorite movies, and that the original trilogy pales by comparison to them. Which is fine. I disagree, but that's my opinion, and I try to not inflict mine upon other people unless it's in a discussion of "things I like". :D

I also make a point to not get upset if someone hates something I love, or loves something I hate. Their opinion on the matter doesn't impact my enjoyment of said thing in any way.

Empire Strikes Back was the best Star Wars movie Period...

I have high hopes Rogue One will surpass it.

The great thing is now fans of Thrawn's original incarnation get a new representation of a beloved character, while those who weren't as keen have a chance to hopefully see him in a way they do like. It's potentially a win-win, depending on how he turns out.

Now I wish they had waited and cast Jason Issacs as Thrawn. Ah, well. Who could have known?

I enjoyed Thrawn's character when I originally read the Zahn series. But like many other things I enjoyed when I was much younger, his character may not hold up well to scrutiny by my much more seasoned standards as an adult. I can't even watch the original Battlestar Galactica nowadays. But, I did find the BG reboot incredibly entertaining. I hold out hope that Thrawn reincarnated can be improved just as that series was.

Who does the voiceover for Thrawn? I was instantly in love with that voice, obviously they wanted to do it right.

Lars Mikkelsen.

Creepiest man on Sherlock? Well, that's obviously perfect.

For some reason I want him voiced by Tim Curry, using his Thrakazog voice from The Tick. Don't know why, but the very thought of this super evil, terrifying Admiral...talking like Thrakazog just makes me giggle....actually i guess I just explained it to myself. :D

Tim Curry is a national treasure, that is true.

To be honest, I think it's because I find Thrawn to be so badly written as an ubermensch villain, who always knows everything before even the other person knows it about themselves, that I just can't take him seriously. So I kind of see him as this Snidely Whiplash villain. And having him voiced as Thrakazog just completes that mental image of silliness to me.

I think you mean **** Dastardly. Snidely Whiplash was the mutt.

Edit: Really. Richard Dastardly then.

And I'm totally okay with somebody on rebels laughing like Muttley Snidely Whiplash, make it happen Filoni.

Maybe an Ewok.

Edit2: Man, I can't even keep my childhood straight. It appears as if Whiplash and Dastardly are Batman and Arrow, doesn't it.
