THRAWN!!!!

By shmitty, in Star Wars: Armada

Too bad he decided to hang out with the Noghri!

Too bad Vader destroyed the Noghri ecosystem while telling them he was very slowly fixing it.

If the Empire had been pragmatically honest and dealt fairly, there'd have been no Secret for Leia to reveal to turn them against it.

Doesn't sound very Sith to me :D

Okay, so is Thrawn essentially the Erwin Rommel of the Empire?

That's basically what I've considered him in the past, Yes.

I would agree with that, too. I never viewed him as a believer in the fanaticism of the Empire. But he was by far their most capable and competent leader.

I think cactusman hits it on the head. Every Imperial commander was insane, an idiot or overly greedy. Thrawn was none of them. And the fact that he was still defeated shows how lazy the writing of most Imperial villains truly was. Your enemy doesn't have to be a lunatic, a bumbling fool or done in by his own ambitions to lose.

Not all of them. You could say Tarkin was a bit insane with his love of supersized wunderwaffen but he was also a competent leader. His underestimation of the weakness of the Death Star was his one mistake that cost him, but everywhere else I see him in Canon so far, he's just as scary as Thrawn was.

In fact I think Rebels is kind of noteworthy in killing off the stupid bumbling Imperial characters. Kallus has stuck around, but he's either improving or setting up for switching sides.

I also miss Palleon. Probably more than I missed Thrawn.

I suppose I was thinking more for EU baddies. Even Isard was nuts. I don't remember many Imperial characters that wouldn't fall into one of those three categories (crazy, moronic or greedy), meanwhile most Rebel/New Republic characters were paragons of integrity and moral virtue. It was incredibly melodramatic.

The good guys on Rebels mostly fit into the melodramatic good guy role (after all, they hate the Empire but never do any more harm then necessary), though it'll be interesting to see what they do with Ezra. At least with the bad guys you have something different. Kallus is an interesting character and you're right - I could see them setting him up to go turncoat. Plus, y'know, Thrawn.

EU Tarkin was consistently portrayed as " crazy- ruthless" the sort of person who blows up a village of a genius engineering student just because that student failed in an exam. In The Rise & Fall of Darth Vader , Vader has suspected Tarkin to be insane for a while - and finally he loses his doubts about it.

Now if I can just get Mara Jade back...

She successful steals the plans but she is capurted...an broken.... and becomes a imperial agent.

But I miss Daala more.

Thrawn possibly coming to the game now because he's canon makes me all kinds of excited.

Yes, Hi everyone, haven't checked back in ages :P

I am somewhat new to Aramda (seeing that ISD model in a store sucked me in .. ) but when I saw the rebls trailer I thought

that now FFG kind of has to make him for Armada, especially with Bel iblis already out there.

So I was thinking of how they could create a Thrawn that does him justice but does not break the game.

This is what I came up with...

[unique] Grand Admiral Thrawn
When a friendly ship resolves a command
[Navigation]: It may increase 1 additional yaw value by 1.
[squadron]: It may activate 1 additional squadron.
[Firepower]: It may reroll 1 additional die.
[Engineering]: It gains 1 additional engineering point.
Faction:[imperial] Cost:[38]

I wanted his ability to reflect that under Thrawn's command the Imperials were just more effective

at everything they did. I don't know if the cost is a little high given that you don't gain tokens (Tarkin)

or dice (Ackbar) or any new ability (Vader). But his ability triggers for dials and tokens so every turn for every ship.

Of course we also need Thrawn's command ship. Which is basically an Imperial version of Leia Organa,

again going with the idea of a more efficient command structure.

[unique] Chimaera
Before revealing revealing a command, you
may spend 1 command token to chose a friendly
ship at distance 1-5 and change that ship's
top command to the command matching the token.
Ship:[iSD] Cost[3]

And then we have Thrawn's right hand man. In the books he always

seems to be someone how favored a good defense to me, but I guess there is

a wide range of other ability that would fit...

[unique] Gilad Pallaeon
While defending, instead of discarding 1 defense token you
may exhaust this card.
