Where abouts in the UK? we should play some X-Wing.
Rogue 1 Story Reel just was put up

That wasn't the sort of reply I was expecting in our discussion, lol.
I live in the North East, near Middlesbrough.
Is it wrong to be more excited for Rogue One then I was for the Force Awakens?
If loving Rogue One is wrong, then I don't want to be right! This is the SW movie I've been hoping for since 1983. I hope Die MausHaus doesn't insist on softening it TOO much.
Do we know how much they are reshooting? I heard it was pretty extensive, really watering down what was described as a gritty, mature war movie. I'm okay with them inserting some of the classic Star Wars snark but I hope it's still gritty. These one-off movies are the perfect opportunity for more adult fare, keep the core movies family friendly but let the anthologies be discretionary viewing.

I can't remember where, but there was an article in a reputable source saying those rumours were wrong. The reshoots had been planned for months and were always going to happen as the film went through the editing & post production process. All major films plan on reshoots. The article stated that there was no watering down of what had been produced.
I think we can trust Disney on this one. They've invested a lot in the franchise and there it is unlikely that the film would have made it to first cut without the Disney Suits being aware of what Gareth Edwards was making. All the marketing etc. has also talked up this is a dark and gritty take on Star Wars. I wouldn't worry too much.
I would also add that the BTS footage we saw from the weekend also points to it being a gritty war film.
I'm pretty certain that the 40% reshot claims are exaggerations. Pretty certain Forest Whitaker's stuff was reshot, just going by the change in his look from the first trailer to recent pics.
And I don't trust Disney, I trust Kathleen Kennedy. She isn't just some pushover. She got TFA pushed to Christmas 2015, despite Iger really, really wanting it out May 15 in order to start getting that major investment back.
I think the Abomination which will be a Marvel/Star Wars Crossover will happen, basically because someone somewhere high up, will say a Han Solo/Wolverine is a thing will happen.
It will be terrible and will make billions of dollars because why not.
This is when a new core set will come out. All will fear and love it, brought out in pure darkness with round ears.
I.. just.. don't... see this happening.
I wouldn't mind if they made a star wars marvel cross over film as long as it wasn't canon. It won't be wolverine though as Fox have though rights and are sinking their teeth in hard.

I'm in Ipswich so it's probably a no go. Of course if we were Canadian our local supermarket would be more of a journey. ![]()

Really? Because I AM Canadian and I have two supermarkets, a Farmer's Market and a Grocery Co-op ALL within walking distance.

Define walking distance?
I always make jokes that other people would have no context for, I am really bad at that. My Boss is Canadian and he has told us about how a drive up north in the UK wouldn't be given a second thought back home.

Walking distance is the time it takes to level up a pokemon............. :-p

The truth is I hope this never happens, but if its going to make hand over fist money then it could. Stranger things have happened in this crazy world. Like Disney buying Star Wars and Ep 8 being great. We had zero hope for this with George at the helm after EP 3.

People who expect Star Wars to be Shakespeare are a bit silly. Star Wars is a fairly generic good vs. evil Sci-Fi formula that just works on some level that's hard to quantify. If it's high drama you're looking for, check out the indies at Cannes that the critics rave about but nobody but film snobs watch. Me, I'll just enjoy Star Wars for what it is - a fun romp through a galaxy far, far away. Nothing more, nothing less.
I got back into Star Wars because of the NJO series. The Vong were the first breathe of fresh air since the Thrawn trilogy, and most people can't even begin to grasp a rdecent Grimdark story even if Aaron-Dembski Baldwin smacked them in the face.Or Edgar Allen Poe returning to write about the empty release of death, but that's not so much grimdark as it is subtle realizations.
Quite honestly, it's not even just watering the franchise down, it's the overall disdain for quality. Rogue One sounds like a b-rated action flick, and Force Awakened was such a poorly written rehash, I refuse to watch it. It's high time they hired people to make grey-area and older themed Star Wars things on the side while they keep **** like Rebels for kids, because willywashing the entire franchise further into family-oriented crap is an excuse for people who can hire talent.
So yeah, I won't be watching Rogue One, hopefully one of you people can enjoy it.
See, here's the basic problem you might be having: Star Wars has never been grimdark. So if you came into Episode 7, or go into Rogue One expecting grimdark, of course you're going to be disappointed. It isn't that kind of movie series.
Seriously, why does everything need to be grimdark these days? There's a time and place for it, sure, but there's also a time and place for stuff like, well, Star Wars, where ultimately, the good guys triumph over the bad guys. Sometimes you just need a good, old-fashioned popcorn movie. The Stars Wars series has generally been good for that.
Star Wars is a fairy tale that happens to be set in space. I like me a bit of GrimDark but not in my Star Wars. That is what Dredd or Watchmen or (insert favourite dark SciFi here) are for. Star Wars has always had a mythical quality to it. Even ESB is only dark in comparison to the films on either side.
I am looking forward to Rogue One. It is an interesting idea and a great chance to do something a little different from the main episodes. The fact that cross-over characters seem to be relatively few and minor helps it to stand on its own. If it succeeds, I hope it will lead to more such side-stories. If not, the main saga is still intact.
Enjoy Star Wars for what it is rather than trying to imagine it into something it isn't.

Do not mistake your preference for something that "is law" for a movie or genre.. I like Star Wars, but a lot more grimdark and thus somewhat more realistic then your "faeries in space ideas" is much appreciated by me, and I suspect enough others,

It's fine that you prefer grimdark, but the basic point is that grimdark is not the preference of the people who actually make Star Wars, and never has been. Expecting that to change simply because that is your preference is actually kind of unreasonable, considering everything that has ever been established by the people who have owned and made the series over the past 39 years. The series has never been grimdark, and has been unbelievably successful. Why would they change that now? There are plenty of other ways to get grimdark if that's your preference. But there's no motivation for Lucasfilm, much less Disney, to make a complete shift in tone for the series at this point.
When you build expectations for the type of story people will get out of a Star Wars movie over a period spanning 4 decades, a sudden tonal shift is far more likely to alienate your core audience than it is to build upon it.
I never implied I wanted that, just pipe it down, trying to switch it all around again with a cheesy comment Ah?
I am saying "it would be appreciated", not "I want it now"... darnit ![]()

Even though I adore the new films, the new Star Trek trilogy is an extremely apt example.

Calling TFA a poorly written rehash while citing the New Jedi Order and Dembski-Bowden as examples of quality writing is certainly a bold move.
