New pictures of TIE Reaper and new shuttle

By melminiatures, in X-Wing

Flappy bird wings?

TIE Ornithopter?

We don't get a good look under the wings, but maybe the TIE Striker is an evolution of the troop dropship, or Coruscant police craft, seen in Rebels with Tarkin, and Ahsoka's leaving the Jedi Order in Clone Wars, with doors and guns that can fire out. Seemingly like the Rebel U-wing.

Looking forward to the new TIE :D the shuttle seems slightly redundant next to the iconic Lambda...

I'd say "it looks ugly"

Agreed, FUGLY, however, maybe it's a stealth version of an redesigned Lambda?

I just wish it looked LIKE an Ugly. Poor things don't get enough representation!

Seriously, if they make another X-Wing or TIE Fighter simulator game (and what better timing than the release of Rogue One?), it should seriously have some uglies in it.

(disclaimer: I AM KIDDING)

I feel it needs 3wings on top and a frontal lambda like cockpit. And two missile pods.

I feel a need to put a third panel on a TIE.

Vertical. Like a goddamn MOHAWK

Just curious if anyone has any theories as to why the wings angle down on the TIE. I understand not wanting vertical wings on an atmospheric fighter, but why not straight out, horizontally?

Ever seen the wings on a Harrier Jump Jet? They angle downwards. That's not the only example, but it's the one that comes readily to mind for me.

Granted, the utter lack of any angle of attack on those "wings" mean they're not terribly likely to actually provide lift in the first place, so I'm assuming it flies in an atmosphere the same way any other spaceship in the Star Wars Universe does, anwyays....

Just spitballing, but it seems plausible that by having the wings parallel to the ground, the fighter creates much less drag, and thus has improved aerodynamics- even if the wings themselves don't offer any lift.

Not nearly as down swept as this new ship.

And at least the Harrier's wings are aerodynamic/ windswept <_<

You guys ever hear of "wing in ground"?

STOP TRYING TO APPLY REAL-WORLD PHYSICS TO THE SHIPS THAT FLY IN SPACE AS IF IT WERE ATMOSPHERE IN THE STORY ABOUT WARRING STAR-WIZARDS WITH MAGIC LASER SWORDS FOR FLIP'S SAKE THAT WAY LIES MADNESS

and where is my canon E-Wing?!

I want a canon E-Wing so badly! But it would be weird to have one show up while the First Death Star is still under construction.

Yeah, if the E-wing is canonized, it should be as a New Republic ship (or a Resistance hand-me-down) in Episode 8. Given that FreiTek is canon and merged with Incom similar to what happened in Legends, it would make sense if the E-wing still exists.

At any rate, I'm not sure why anybody is surprised by the TIE Striker's elongated body. We could already see that in the previously released lineart:

TIE_Striker.jpg

BTW, in Legends the TIE/gt had a similar (though shorter and blockier) stretched fuselage.

Something weird that is bugging me about the design of the TIE Striker is how they have just sliced a TIE Fighter cockpit in two and added a cilinder between both sides... As you can see in the image, there are even details like the hatch that don't make any sense spread appart. How does that hatch open? You can even see the lines and the glass of the hatch broken and then continued in the other part of the ship...

To me that is LAZY design. They didn't take the time to adapt the design of the TIE to the new shape.

What's with the hinges?

And don't tell me this thing is faster than a TIE of any other type (except maybe bomber).

The wings look like they fold up like suicide doors on a lambo.

It looks like there is a front and rear crew. So it would make sense to be applicable to "tail gunner".

Further, it looks like the middle section is bomb\munitions capable, which would make sense in Rogue One on planet\based attacks.

So my guess is going to be a TIE Bomber upgrade that is slightly faster with less munitions.

Just my 2 cents\observations.

Both look very nice. The Reaper's really sleek and I'm glad they eschewed the traditional ball cockpit, while the Shuttle reminds me of a real world stealth bomber in its angles and coloring.

I'm also not sure how someone can complain about originality; the Shuttle looks far less like a Lambda than, say, the Gunboat. Yes, they're based on the Lambda Shuttle and TIE... Because it's the Empire, everything in the Empire is a Shuttle or TIE with only a few exceptions.

It might be able to change wing position, tilting them up or down.

Also, those wings visually communicate speed. This is gonna be a fast ship.

Flappy bird wings are so useful is space...

You're saying this in a series where most fighters have wings.

I would like it a lot more if the wings folded up. I hope they do... Actually it would be nice if they divided and it had four wings.

I think that's exactly what will happen. The wings will split in two and form an X like an X-wing.

Which, while my natural reaction would be 'Yuk', I'm actually thinking it might be pretty cool :)

You can see that the wing does look a little 'split', with a 'raised' wing on top of a possible lower wing.

The hinges, and positioning of said hinges, might make this possible.

We'll find out soon enough! :)

Also, if we are right then ffg owes us free models when they are released.

...You guys are just now noticing that this thing has variable geometry? That's the first sodding thing I noticed. I asked myself why the wings weren't on struts, then noticed the center bit... Then, the lego set came out, picture of that with the wings up, confirming my suspicions.

I ain't diggin on that new shuttle all too much. Just because it has utterly massive wings that don't really need to be that big. It's not even an Aerodynamics thing for me, and that would be a silly reason- this IS Star Wars after all... But...

Egads why are they so long?

But yeah I don't really... dig the TIE Striker's cockpit bit at the top. Maybe The Empire really did just weld two pods together and put a connector in it? We're seeing a metric ton of images that show side gunners at the bottom of a O shape thing. You guys don't think that maybe the TIE Striker has sodding door gunners, do you?

I really, really hope that's not the case. I REALLY. REALLY HOPE THAT ISN'T IT.

IIRC, the sensor recievers / emmiters on imperial shuttles are located at the tip of the wings.

Because... It has something to do with the high output of radiation / emissions from those arrays, which have necessarily to be located as far from the crew as possible.

That's why all imperial shuttles have long wings by design, anything closer or compact, and the sensor arrays would literally fry the crew on usage.

There you go, you have your official explanation... Now, keep moaning and bitching as much as you like.

Then this new one's sensors must be amazing.

Such long wings.

but.....surely.....someone, anyone...could have come up with a better shuttle.

seriously...they PAID someone to do that?
