"Gain the Advantage" Question

By Darth Poopdeck, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The description for "Gain the Advantage" space combat action reads, "It allows a pilot to gain the upper hand ever a single opponent so that he positions himself for a better attack during the following round. ...lf the check succeeds, the pilot ignores all penalties imposed by his own and his opponent's use of the Evasive Maneuvers starship maneuver until the end of the following round."

I can't recall if the developers answered this, but I've heard that once you've successfully gained the advantage, you keep it until the other ship successfully gains the advantage. The way it's written states that it ends the following round. Can someone clear this up?

I'm pretty sure it's "until the end of the next round OR until the other pilot out-GtA you, whichever comes first".

It's a confusing Action. The way it's worded I agree it simply ends at the completion of the following round. It's worded to me to take into account Master Pilot and for the Pilot using it, to immediately take advantage of a successful roll and attack. The way it's worded it seems almost like the opposing vessel's pilot immediately makes a sort of Pilot saving throw versus it in the next Turn. I think one of the podcasts described its proper use.

Could someone list what podcast episode that was discussed?

Probably "Order 66 Episode 25 - Great, Sam! Don't get Cocky!

When you GTA you gain the benefits for the following round the most important being selecting shield facing. If the enemy uses GTA against you and suceeds he chooses the facing when firing and gets all the advantages and more importantly YOU DON'T. If the enemy doesn't use GTA or fails his roll you can use GTA next round without the Increase in difficulty. Otherwise if he has gained the advantage against you you can take it back at +1 difficulty then he can try and take it back at +2 difficulty and so on.

The way it plays out is as follows

A. millenium falcon is firing on a freighter sil 4 and 2 tie advanced. Han actives evasive manuvers and goes for GTA on the freighter and succeeds.

B. Luke shoots at the freighter and does not take any evasive manuver penalties he also gets to choose to shoot the freighters rear section where its shields are weaker

C. Chewie shoots at a tie advanced and TAKES evasive manuver penalties he may not choose his facing.

D The freighter 's pilot takes evasive manuvers and tries to gain the advantage rolling at difficulty +1 if he succeeds his gunner's will not take the penalty for his

own evasive manuvers and will not be upgraded by the falcons evasive manuver they may also choose facing. (please note he has to spend an action for GTA it is not free or reflexive)

or

E. If the frighter fails to gain the advantage his gunners will take both the penalty from his evasive manuver and from han's evasive manuver

F. The tie advanced are not going to waste actions gaining the advantage and will simply fire at an upgraded difficulty on the falcon from the falcons evasive

manuvers regardless of the success or failure of the freighters gain the advantage roll.

The next round

If the freighter failed to gain the advantage HAN can do anything he wants and still has the bonus for his pilots to fire on the freighter. If he wanted he could

GTA one of the TIE advanced, but this loses him the bonus on the freighter

If the freighter gained the advantage back HAN could try and regain the advantage at +2 difficulty but never tell him the odds on that.

There is no limit to how many times gain the advantage can swap between 2 ships and each time its difficulty is 1 higher
