Oracle of the Void

By njtriant, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hello everyone. i was curious to know if there have been any news regarding the Oracle of the Void data base.

I understand that it has become obsolete now that the game will change but it is the best database for the previous version and it is important for history and the old players. Has FFG made known any thought about it ?

Well the site's still up so... If it hasn't been taken down yet I kind of doubt it'll happen in the foreseeable future.

i fear thst future will be around the arrival of the new L5R. For now it helps the old players keep it together, but when the new game hits the shelves it will become obsolete :(

I don't think so. Ther're are dead games databases hanging around like fe. for original Netrunner.

The current owner has stated that he plans to keep it up until he is instructed by FFG to take it down.

As of this afternoon, it re-directs to FFG website with a 404 error "page not found". What a shame to lose this history.

It was up for a bit last night.

When I go to oracleofthevoid.com, I get redirected to FFG's L5R page. The imperialassembly link isn't working for me.

I understand protecting your IP, but if Fantasy Flight has cease&desisted these databases, I'm enormously disappointed. They were a great resource for nostalgic nerds like me, and I don't really see the point in deleting them.

It honestly feels like a creepy erasure of the game's history.

Weird, I used this a few hours ago I thought.

They may want to maintain the databases themselves.

It is not the "point in deleting them", it is the cost of maintaining them that matters.

I personally think it is unreasonable to expect FFG to cover that cost, especially as maintain it is directly at odds with them trying to put a new product on the market. maintaining it would only create confusion players new to the game.

I thought they left it in the hands of whoever had it before. While they technically own the IP, they don't really care about it. However, I will be sad if it is gone forever.

I always thought Oracle of the Void was an AEG run site

It was AEG, they launched it at the start of Emperor Edition. I'm really surprised it took this long to go offline.

It was maintained by a volunteer.

from the facebook group, it sounds like FFG asserted ownership of the domain, without notifying the guy who runs oracle. he said it should be back up, but people seem to still be having issues getting to it. might be a DNS propagation issue? i don't think its a question of _if_ it will be up, since he has the full databases and code, so much as when/where.

FFG didn't buy the rights to card images and text of AEG's version of the game, did they? I don't think you can prevent encyclopedic dissemination of information, provided applicable copyrights are cited.

I think they bought the whole IP. Didn't we see illustrations taken from the CCG already?

FFG bought everything associated with the IP. All art assets, old books, everything.

I think this might be more of an issue of ignorance/apathy than one of active maliciousness. I imagine FFG does not really care that there is an old AEG card database. As stated by @cielago the maintainer of the DB said FFG just picked up something they owned. The fact it went down was probably just a side effect.

To be fair, they may not pay for it to come back up.

It appears to be back up now

IIRC, AEG didn't own the rights to much of the older art, meaning that FFG doesn't own it now.

Nope, not as far as I can tell.

from the facebook group, it sounds like the server that its been relocated to is having trouble keeping up with all the attention, and requires periodic bouncing. i suspect further relocation may be in the works.
