Expose+Rear Admiral

By HippoXXX, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So i just started playing and getting into X-Wing recently and one of my first games vs a local player we had a dispute.

Question: So if i Expose with Rear Admiral Chiraneau and my opponent attacks me at range 3 with a primary weapon attack would i still get my +1 Green Dice?

My answer was: Yes i would because Range dice are added on and not a modification of agility where as he was trying to say that all calculations are done during combat and that it was a factor in calculating the number of dice i roll.

I have seen both answers online so i didn't really know who to believe since the posts where 1-3 years ago.

Thanks!

You would roll 1 green die. Your starting agility is 0 you reduce it by 1 to a minimum of 0 and then add the range combat bonus.

The range combat bonus is always applied after any other agility modifiers. A ship at Range 3 when being attacked by a primary weapon will always roll at least 1 green die.

Read the attack steps in the RRG it specifically lists to modify the number of dice rolled due to upgrades and other effects and then apply any range bonus effects.

Per page 4 of the FAQ, you do not consider the "to a minimum of 0" until after all affects have been added together. So in the example above expose makes his 0 agility a -1 then range 3 makes it a 0 not a +1 so no he does not get a green die.

The range combat bonus is not part of the agility value, it's a different thing entirely.

The range modifier refers to dice, not your agility. It does not add +1 to your agility, it adds one green die to your defense roll. So regardless of what's going on with your agility, you get an extra green die when someone is attacking you with a primary weapon at Range 3. Same if they're shooting through an obstacle.

Specifically, the dice you roll for defence are (Your agility value) + range bonus (of applicable) + obstruction (if applicable).

It's the (Your agility value) calculation to which the paragraph on p4 of the FAQ applies.

Ok, that is interesting and good to know, I did just go back a re-read the rules reference book and see it. I guess the way I had heard it being talked about in game was just bad language use because it was always stated that the range bonus was a bonus to agility not a separate additional die to be added. Thanks for correcting my mistake.

A lot of people get lazy and just refer to everything you roll as "agility," but it does make a big difference. I Tractor Beamed a B-Wing down to 0 agility, but since my next ship was shooting at Range 3, the B-Wing still got to roll a die and managed to evade the single hit I rolled.
