Regionals this weekend...

No hope!

I just keep getting worked by the shops best players and my morale is nonexistent. I need some advice from the board on how to shape up my game and how to win against solid lists.

Here is what I've decided to run, or at least I think I've decided!

Inquisitor + Title + PTL + AT

Soontir + Title + PTL + AT + SD

Omega Leader + Juke + CR + SD

95 points total.

The idea is just take three Aces with proven builds and try to do the best I can against all comers. I feel good about this list but I have only flown it twice and lost horribly. In fact I have lost horribly in all my practice matches and seem to lose a ship or two every round until it's over.

So what do I do? How do I avoid such ignominious defeats in a competitive setting?

I can offer you no advice though I wish the best of luck and be an excellent person no matter win or lose.

I find your lack of faith disturbing...

Only thing you can do is fly your list the best you can. learn from any mistakes and maybe you might spot something you hadn't noticed yet and use that to your advantage.

Or just stop worrying about winning and focus on having fun!

Only Soontir qualifies as a super ace: Can reposition TWICE AND still have mods.

OL is honestly a flying brick vs everyone else hes not locked to.

Quizzie, while fun, suffers from lack of actions, easily blockable green turns and most of all, PS8, against other aces.

So, why do you like this list? What has worked for you so far? Not sarcastic, but trying to understand what you're good at. Other than rolling bad dice.

Add a proton rocket to the Inquisitor, yo. Creates a nice threat bubble that will shift target priority and gives you a nice big attack against a key target. 98 is enough for a solid bid.

Which ship is the Emperor on? I don't see him in your list. I thought the latest FAQ said you can't play in tournaments without the Emperor and you can't take notes

What do I like about this list? Well, to be honest I'm not sure. I thought I liked the Quis because I've flown him a bit and I like his ability. Soontir I have never really flown nor have I seen a lot of him locally but he is a bit of a benchmark. I can't blame my stunning losses on his load-out, that's for sure. Any mistakes made with Soontir are user induced, not the result of silly list building (which I fear I may be afflicted with...). Omega Leader is again a new pilot to me, but I have flown a lot of Zeta Leader and so the dial isn't the problem.

The more I think objectively about it, the more I see what a silly list this is, haha...

Pardon? The inquisitor has great action economy. With PTL he gets his target lock and evade on one action and can still boost, barrel roll or focus.

The turn is only easy to block if you have a ship nearby that will do it. A good inquisitor player shouldn't leave his ship in a position to be blocked. At least I've found it tricky to do.

Without knowing where you're falling down specifically, it's difficult to comment. One piece of advice that comes up with Imp Aces time and again, is be patient with them, *especially* if you don't have Palp to cover your back. I always want to fly aggressively and that leads to me pushing my luck too much when flying Imp aces, maybe that might be your problem?

1. Ditch everything for 5x Crack Shot + Autos + Adaptability + Refitted Green Squadron A-Wings.

2. During each round, blow up one enemy ship and run around the edges until time is called.

3. Repeat 2 until you win the regional.

Just try to avoid meeting Party Bus.

The rest are definitely not your problem. Palp aces? I guess you did include some good old-fashioned 3-point initiative bid?

Uboats? Hardly a problem to reach R1 with boosting dudes, and keeping Omega to the side most of the time and you're good.

Swarm? Bait it into asteroid fields (you did take 3 large rocks, right? RIGHT?) and avoid concentrated fire from 4+ Ties.

Z-swarm? Tough luck. Plucked to death and blocked is a bad idea. Flank&spank

It's a fine list if you put a procket on Inq, but it is VERY green-dice-reliant. I ran something similar at UKGE (TC Carnor instead of Inq) and gave my worst performance since my first ever tournament, because lists like this are *incredibly* unforgiving of mistakes, and I made quite a few.

If you trust yourself not to screw up and can live with the irritation when your green dice screw you, go for it, this list is hella fun to fly.

If that will bother you too much, I'd suggest running something with more hit points.

I'm just glad I could actualy use a Darth Vader quote (in context!) in real life. :)

Hey Darkcloak, I know the feeling dude. Don't let it get you down, go and play for the fun of it! :)

As far as your list goes, have you considered dropping OL for an x7/Delta? They provide a bit of muscle to an ace list, are great blockers in a pinch, and most importantly are a right laugh to fly. The best two flankers in the game and a ship that's far too tough to be 28pts? Why the hell not?

Good luck.

Needs more defender.

Joe, please stop posting these in my threads.

Those three ships are all unforgiving - if you're better than the other players then you'll crush them, but if they're better than you you're going to be in for a rough ride. If you're trying to win 'uphill' battles against better players then this isn't the right list to try that with

That's advice I had not considered. OL was intended to get in the most threatening ships face and negate their ability to score hits, a sort of psuedo-blocker/Carnor. However, a bit of brawn might be useful too. And I did get a sexy new Defender with Imp Vets...

But here is another idea...

Buzzsaw Whisper @ 44 points

2x Gamma Vets w/ DE, Homers and GCs. Maybe some bombs?

Total: Less than 100 depending on the bombers loadout.

Well it always seems to fall apart during the combat phase. The part where I roll green dice, specifically. I have gone through and taken all the duds out of my dice collection. If you look closely at the blank faces you can see small depressions in them and so (theoretically) those dice will roll blanks as those faces are lighter. However... This theory falls apart when I pick up the dice and roll them as they all seem to roll poorly! I do have a plan for this though. Use my opponents dice. According to the rules I can request to use them, or another set as provided by the TO. So... that's my version of meta-gaming har har!

Another thing I struggle with is the actual engagement of the enemy on my terms. How does one avoid combat when the other player is bent on getting to grips? I mean, it always seems to end up in a joust when combat is met and if I try to run across the mat then I'm simply getting shot in the rear with no return fire of my own. How is that a good tactic? Invariably I end up shooting quite poorly and then suffering large amounts of damage that my green dice simply won't or can't roll out of. People try to say, shoot better and forget about defense, try B-Wings. But then the problem is only exacerbated by the sheer fact of not being able to dodge damage at all. Couple this with a rather underwhelming attack roll and the entire premise is broken.

Here's a list I'm currently trying out that you might like :

  • 2 x Scimitar + TIE Shuttle + Tactician + Systems Officer
  • Omega Leader + Juke + Comm Relay
  • Soontir Fel + PTL + RGT + Autothrusters + TIE mkII

That being said, I don't think you'll solve your problem by changing your list. The list you initially posted is solid. The 5 point initiative bid might be excessive - I'd rather have PRockets on the INQ - but it's a solid list.

I think your probably much more to do with HOW you fly the list. Imperial aces are not a forgiving bunch. If you bump them or leave them exposed, you will very likely get punished for it pretty hard.

Five alphas with Autothrusters.
