Should there be a reward for repainted ships in Organised Play?

By Sarcon, in X-Wing

I love X-wing to death, I've played my fair share of tournaments and love all the prize support FFG provides. Don't see this topic as critisism that FFG isn't doing it right, it just bugs me that creativity is not rewarded. There is a whole section in the tournament rules dedicated to repainted ships already. And personally, I would love to see more customized squadrons!

It doesn't have to be something big, maybe just a challenge coin or a medal with an X-wing logo and a brush that says "Best squadron at (type of event) event".

And I understand the counter arguement - "painting doesn't have anything to do with the game". That's true, but both playing the game well and doing a repaint well, require skill. And I believe it absolutely enhances the x-wing experience all together.

What do you guys think?

So does dressing well.

Fine if a store wants to hold a competition, but the things come prepainted for a reason.

It'd make more sense to start such a reward in Imperial Assault, but here?

Lots of people do re-paint though. I actually know a guy that doesn't play x-wing because he doesn't like pre-painted stuff.

There's nothing stopping TO's from doing their own little 'on the side' painting comp. Or just awardign a little bonus prize to the best looking squadron, it would be nice and doesn't hurt anyone.

What about pilots that take showers? Should be givin a challenge coin for it. imo.

Made out of soap.

I agree! There should be a concourse prize for best painted squad. It doesn't take much to do and adds a cool extra piece to the tournament scene.

I'd rather fly against a unique well painted squadron than against all the stuff I've seen hundreds of times before ;)

And dressing well and showering is common sense, those arguements are invalid ;)

:D

Biggest beard should win.

Biggest beard should win.

Everybody dressed as Chewbacca, please :D

No.

;)

I'd enjoy it if a store decided to hold a painting competition on the side.

But FFG isn't trying to push the hobby aspect of X-wing - the things come prepainted, for crying out loud - so I can't imagine much official support. I certainly wouldn't mind if they had some small prize pack for such bespoke competitions, though. :)

A "reward" as far as Organized Play is concerned? Hell no. What your ships look like have NOTHING to do with how your squadron performs. I could play with "invisible" ships and not have it alter the actual game.

Now if you wanted to add something outside or organized play that rewards artistic abilities that something entirely different.

Anything that Organized Play supports should be uniform and objective. If a TO/store owner wants to run an event that is supported by Organized Play and provide additional prize support for a painting prize then more power to them.

The reward for repainted ships is the repainted ships

I've just started down the dark path of repainting my ships, somewhere between wanting Poe's X-wing to look right (before the Heroes pack was announced) and wanting to individualize ships for the Aturi Cluster, and I would neither ask nor expect any official prize support for the completely subjective quality of my paint jobs. Wins and losses can be scored objectively. Painting is a matter of personal taste. Besides, you just know some people would get salty when they didn't win, accusing the judges of bias or collusion or something.

On an unofficial level, I could see something offered by the game store or convention hosting an event, probably using a people's choice/voting mechanic.

It doesn't fit X-wings business model which does include Organized Play. Given that the models are already assembled and painted unlike say Warmachine which is unassembled and unpainted.

Now for Imperial Assault a painting competition would make more sense. But as of now I think FFG wants to stay out of the hobby market for table top gaming. They practically are making the only Warhammer tabletop product that sells, why would they want to spoil their relationship with Games Workshop?

I'd personlly like to see a sportsmanship score in tournament play over a painting one. And thus a minor prize tht goes out to the person wth the best sprotsmanship score at the end...even just a promo card would be nice.

Most big tournaments in my area host a repaint/modification contest as a side event. Always must enter a ship thatyou are not playing with on the day. Winner usually gets something small or small amount of Store Credit and bragging rights.

I mod and paint my ships and I enjoy sharing ideas with others and passing good comments back and forth to each other.

First tournament I went to they had a prize for best painted ship. I don't think FFG should do it, but I like the idea of the community and local stores encouraging it.

This is not Warhammer 40k or Age of Sigmar or Infinity or any of the other dozens of games that expect players to assemble, convert and paint their own figures. If you're looking for that, go play one of those games. I got out of them because so many jerk off players in those games were super elitest about armies being painted to "their standard". Well I give no craps about your standards. I hate painting, my vision sucks, my hands shake and I have no artistic bones in my entire body. I also don't have hours to sit around painting little army men, hours I could be using to PLAY with painted army men.

I love X-Wing because the models look great, come prepainted and let me jump right into the game. No clipping sprues, no waiting until it's nice enough outside to prime, no hours and money spent on painting I don't even like doing, all for some doofus to drop my figure and bust it at every joint. None of that garbage. Just playing the game. That is what FFG should focus on.

No. Definitely not.

Have a paint contest as a side event.

But even that...is usually judged by people who don't paint. So...they don't recognise quality and effort when they see it.

They vote for stuff like..." oh look there's orange on it." Even though the orange looks like it was applied by a drunk who used a roller loaded with corn syrup and food coloring.

But hey...look

Orange!

It's wierd. Its like having a group of building designs being judged by seamstresses instead of architects.

What about pilots that take showers? Should be givin a challenge coin for it. imo.

Short answer..: No.

no it shouldn't be rewarded unless you are going to penalize those paint schemes/job that look crappy or could be viewed as offensive or taking away from the game in some obscure subjective way... as we seem to have a few "sensitive" folks around here.. Now what should happen is FFG should have had the poe repaint as a prize!! folks need to remember the days when you HAD to paint your miniatures and that SUCKED..
