Mynock Podcast 25: Origins and System Open Meta

By Rytackle, in X-Wing

This kind of **** could only happen to me. I give a brief, congratulatory shout out for a successful regional season and somehow end up on the beef section three episodes running. If that was your idea of nice words for someone then feel free to reserve your compliments on the next show. Thank you for making such a huge deal of my clinically diagnosed dyslexia though I really appreciate it I'll be sure to buy you guys a beer at worlds for that. By the way, while we're on the topic of not remembering about people I like how you were unable to specify one single point I made during my 20 minute rant about dengaroo. It's cool though, I'm sure you pronounced my last name correctly the first time you read it.

Me listening to you guys talk about dengaroo and all the ways it gives a giant eff you to certain ships/lists remembering all the times I had lost to it in that exact manner had me like http://i.imgur.com/AdiBPrO.jpg .

I'm surprised you guys didn't bring up the match up against your precious "special" as I've seen it just completely crush it in the few times it's paired up.

Join the club! Either the BTD podcast or myself personally has been in the beef section every episode since before they even knew they had a beef section.

I will have a discussion with Dee. I'll say it publically, it's not our intent to bully or be D-bags and your criticism is heard. I personally apologize for any comments that went too far. We are in the business of playful rivalry and group discussion, not actually creating rifts in the community. We don't think we're any better than anyone else, so again, this appology is coming from me.

Too late, Ryan Farmer! Rift opened! You Mynocks better stay in that smelly space asteroid you call California!

I heard they were looking at a summer home in CO.

P.S. Dee's actually a big softie in private he's just acting tough to put on a show for his listeners :D .

I suspect maybe this.

Does Dengaroo push Whisper out of the meta? It seems just about tailor made to screw Whisper right to hell. If she has initiative, she can cloak, but even then, re-rolled dice due to Zuckuss are crummy, and 3 hits all the time seems like it would drop her sooner rather than later. Maybe she tries to sneak by and start hammering Manaroo?

I think it does put Baby in a corner. The Howards' Aces fare better with double Autothrusters, but it's still nasty.

Beef section on all these different podcasts are getting old anyways. Have had to fast forward some of them.

Who else is doing them? I need to serve some Cease & Desist orders!

I must add, on Ryan's proposed manaroo nerfs. I dont think they would do much.

1. Making zuckuss cost more. Even if zuckuss was 5 points, you could still run him, just drop the plasma torp on dengar and you would still have a 1 pt init bid!

2. Changing manaroos range to 1-2 to pass tokens. You could switch dengar to predator instead of lone wolf, and then you are bringing manaroo more into the fight instead of running all the time. This may end up being a viable option anyway.

Dengaroo is not OP. Peeps on vassal are already knowing how to focus fire kill dengar or block/kill manaroo.

I like this post. I think Zuckuss is problematic, and even more so at 1 point. Green dice are already bad; the ability to force multiple rerolls...wow. I do disagree on Predator: it would weaken the build out of "Tier 1", as Dengar would no longer be able to withstand concentrated fire. But...maybe that's where it should be for balance sake anyhow.

Vassal is always ahead of the curve, but in the hands of a top player, Dengaroo is... vicious. (It's difficult to have these conversations without agreed upon definitions of "over powered" or "broken".)

Aha I ain't mad my brothers, I just don't want to see Dee turn into the Skip Bayless of X-Wing.

I can totally understand why Dee was upset at me and wanted to call me out, cause really not remembering the name of someone you never met or even talked to really is basically the equivalent of calling their mother a *****. Then again I'm not a big time regional champion so maybe I don't expect that many people to know who I am :D . Seriously though when's the last time NOVA Squadron or Kessel Run gave you guys a shout out, I'd bet a ticket to Worlds them dudes don't know your names either why don't you go at them, give us some reprieve from the scathing vitriol that pours from Dee's hate-filled mouth.

P.S. Dee's actually a big softie in private he's just acting tough to put on a show for his listeners :D .

SKIP BAYLESS!!!! I'd have taken Stephen A. Smith maybe, but it's on now! Gonna serve you up a defamation suit or slap you in the face: call hits or misses to find out which:

HEY, get it straight: I'm a big softie in public too!

Penta-post? Is that even legal? The disgusting things you get away with on the west coast...

Any reference at all to Jerry Lawler will always get a like out of me.

Thanks! I guess it will be seen.

The conclusion I draw from your response is that you MUST get on vassal then.... come join us bro!

You could even give Manaroo's ability a range of 1-3 and see a huge impact. That range would still force Manaroo to stay close enough to the fight that she might end up negating Lone Wolf, getting blocked and not getting an action, end up out of range on some turns, or be an easier target. Letting her pull donuts on the far side of the mat while boosting Dengar is problematic.

Honestly, I'd just like to see some sort of ordnance or bomb that based the damage the defender is facing on how many stress tokens that had. Maybe "Roll one red die for each stress token you have, suffer any hits or crits rolled" or something that works like a Proton Rocket but adds dice based on the number of stress tokens the target has.

I'm not sure Tycho or Hera crew need a targeted nerf like that. But I'm also not sure how you'd go about designing an upgrade to rein Zuckuss in a bit without some collateral damage. Fortunately, I don't have to.

A 1 time use upgrade like that would not do much. Dengarooo pilots would just acknowledge that it is going to be a bad matchup... and if you have that upgrade its really only useful against dengar dengaroo and tycho, so its not that great for the rest of your matchups.

The build is not broken, people beat it all the time. Ask Duncan Howard.

It obviously would need some tweaking but any squishy little ship that has PTL and is constantly stressed would likely not be a fan of it either. Something that turned could turn stress into damage would be cool and not specifically because I want to see Dengaroo nerfed. I've thought that an ability that gave stress an increased effect might be interesting to mix things up a bit.

Hello,

This was the first podcast I listened fully, mostly because I'm a huge fan of the SoS circuit but in the end I was very disappointed that you didn't even take 5 minutes to check the MajorJuggler thread in this very forum, where you could have found the infos you were missing.

Also speaking about just the winning list is a bit lackluster considering the state of xwing, an analysis of the cuts would have been better suited imo.

I can feel your anger. It gives you focus, makes you stronger. BB - 2020

Not saying your opinion isn't valid but there's a ton of other X-Wing podcasts that I can listen to if I want to hear round by round details of tournaments. Mynock podcast tends to cover stuff like that pretty quickly and that's why I like it. There's also something about how much of a pompous ass that Dee can be that's actually kind of appealing (he's like the X-Wing podcast version of early 90s Bono).

So you know how when you listen to a Bad Religion song you sometimes need to break out the dictionary because nobody normal puts ratiocination, probity, and theophany in one goddamned stanza? That's what talking to Dee is like.

True story.

This is the first comment of yours I have read, and I AM DISSAPOINT because you have not listened to the previous podcasts where some of this was covered.

Sorry :/ Time constraints are part of the issue, but I did start with looking at Bob's threads. What data was I remiss in relaying from them?

True story.

I thought it was odd that Dee kept pronouncing "absurd" with a z sound instead of an s. Is that a geographic thing?

Not one whit; it's a pompous ass Dee thing to drawl out extra emPHAsis on the wrong syl-LA-ble for maximum poignancy. And for an earlier poster, maybe it's not coincidence that U2 is my all time favorite band...
