[SPOILER] Life Debt

By Swusn, in Star Wars: Armada

Not really a spoiler but some people are hyper sensitive about this stuff so I labeled it spoiler.

In the new novel Life Debt we are introduced to the first starship produced specifically for the New republic in Canon.

The Star Hawk class.

I am currently on chapter 34 of the book and all I know for sure so far is:

1. First ship designed and built exclusively by the new republic.

2. The materials for the ship came mostly from salvaged imperial ships.

3. The front of the ship is described as the "hatchet end"

4. 1 Star Hawk and an "Alderaan cruiser" (Corellian Corvette) can easily defeat a single (undermanned) Star Destroyer.

Based on what we know of the Canon Novels so far I suspect this ship was put in because we might see it in Episode 8. All though I do not expect to see new trilogy ships in Armada some time this may open some interesting possibilities.

I'm on ch 5 but they also name dropped Screed and the SSD Eclipse! They are canon now!

Screed was namedropped in the newcanon novel Tarkin first.

Is the Aftermath: Life Debt Eclipse anything like the EU one? Black, superlaser, gravity well projectors?

IO9 dropped a bunch of stuff yesterday. We don't know if the Eclipse is the one from Dark Empire, only that it is a Super Star Destroyer, was Emperor Palpatine's personal SSD flagship, has been reported destroyed, and that the report may be suspect.

I was going to dismiss the description of the new ship, but then I realized they are apparently including other characters from the books. I suppose it's possible they could do so for a whole ship, but I'm a little concerned is from a novel and not am established visual source. Didn't they previously have a bunch of vaguely identified ships and squadrons in the first Aftermath book as well?

I feel like this book name dropping a lot more stuff than the previous

Wasn't the Droids cartoon Canon?

Wasn't the Droids cartoon Canon?

Lucas basically greenlighted anything that could sell toys for a few years. Droids was about as official as the comic books or the backstories of the action figures.

Sure, but when Disney created Legends, didn't they say that all of the cartoons were canon?

While funny, we all know they were refering to Clone Wars and Rebels. RAW vs RAI

No, When they bought Lucas Film they said the movies and the clone wars cartoon (the CGI one not the animated one) were the only things from the past that were canon. Everything released under the disney name afterward would be canon.

This book is a lot better than the first one in the trilogy and I strongly suggest you all read it. Some of the second half of the book actually made me giddy with all of it's Star Wars awesomeness.

The Eclipse was mentioned as being one of the 13 SSDs that were in existence but nothing was ever mentioned as to the class other than it was a super star dreadnought.

They have also included several characters from other canon sources in parts of the book which give it a great feeling of being part of the larger universe without beating you over the head screaming "look at me I'm Star Wars!"

I'm about 1/3rd of the way through it now and so far..... MUCH better.

The writing style is still bad, but I'm doing audiobook this time around, and it's easier to get past.

The Interludes are much better, because instead of being about some random people everytime that I don't care about... they are often germane to the story. And when they aren't, they are about something cool or important. Basically you are going to actually CARE about the interludes, and that is an improvement.

And there is a lot more involvement with the known Star Wars universe. The first book didn't "feel" Star Wars-ish enough for me, while this one feels more Star Wars-ish. I'm enjoying it thus far.

It sometimes boggles my mind how such poor quality producers (writers, toy makers, etc.) get their mitts on the Star Wars license. I'm looking at you, Hasbro! Ah great, now I'm totally off topic and wishing Kit Lau/Acid Rain would be granted the 3.75" SW figure license.

At least the Japanese toys are awesome, though. Just cost an arm and a leg to import.... I should have capitalized on the weak yen at the beginning of the year.

FFG: thank you for being an excellent rules producer/excellent mini designer! Now just work on not putting in so heavy a wash on your spaceships and not using such a heavy hand on your contrasts and accents, and I'll be very happy with your miniature painting as well! (CR90s excluded- they're just about perfect out of the box)
