Two defenders, are they viable?

By lgndrofasort, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Got a bit of a problem, as I have all of the non huge ship expansions for the Imperials, but, is what I have here viable?

Rexler Brath

  • Twin Ion Engine
  • Veteran Instincts
  • TIE/x7

Maarek Stele

  • Twin Ion Engine
  • Predator
  • TIE/x7

"Omega Ace"

  • Juke
  • Comm Relay

I assume you mean Omega Leader, since you have put Juke and Comm relay on him. He is definitely viable. Omega Ace not so much, at least not in competitive play.

The Defender titles are still pretty new, but I think it is safe to say that Rexler and Maarek are both inferior to Vessery. Especially in this list, as Vessery's ability pairs very well with Omega Leader.

I agree, if you want to go for 2 Defenders and an FO, the following is probably better.

39 Vessery (35), Tie/D title (0), Ion Cannon (3), VI (1)

35 Ryad (34), Tie/x7 title (-2), Push the Limit (3)

26 Omega Leader (21), Juke (2), Comms Relay (3)

100 Total

This is a pretty good list as it makes the most of the various synergies around. OL wants to take a Target Lock and keep it which is handy for Vessery. Ryad with PTL/x7 effectively gets 3 actions per turn so can easily take a second TL if you want. Vessery is your big stick. :D

There are a few variations you can make if you want. Mk2 Engines on Ryad really help her shed stress after PTL so you could drop VI on Vess down to adapatability. Alternatively you could replace the Ion Cannon with a flechette cannon or tractor beam. Here is a slight variation that loses a little firepower but gets higher PS and more control.

38 Vessery (35), Tie/D title (0), Tractor beam (1), VI (1), Mk2 Engines (1)

36 Ryad (34), Tie/x7 title (-2), Push the Limit (3), Mk2 Engines (1)

26 Omega Leader (21), Juke (2), Comms Relay (3)

100 Total

Cool trio of pilots. I think I would just switch the EPTs though; Predator on Rexler (since he always wants to focus for his ability, so this way he gets at least 1 reroll) and VI on Maarek (who can then Target Lock to help get crits). And like MrAndersson wrote, Omegal Leader should be your TIE/fo with those upgrades, not Omega Ace.

Karhedron's two lists are scary. :-)

I wouldn't do VI on Rex. I like something more like Predator or Juke for him, but two x7s and a mini-ace is a pretty legit squad. When the titles were first spoiled, I think I was looking at a similar squad.

Rexler Brath, Juke, x7 = 37

Maarek, Juke, x7 = 35

Omega Leader, Juke, Comm Relay = 26

2 points leftover to slap on Mk2 engines, or upgrade Jukes to Predator, or initiative, depending on your taste.

I ran this yesterday, it was fun and untouchable (granted part of that was good dice rolls but still it was a LOT of green dice being rolled)

Karhedron, I agree with you in the fullest, I just bought the pack and I see what you got going, thanks for the support all of you folks.

If you want to put Mk II on Ryad in this build, which is probably a very good idea, just swap it for VI on Vessery. When he's using an ion cannon, there's not a huge need for him to have a higher PS. And it's always hard for me to justify taking a tractor beam over an ion cannon when the ion is just so much better.

I really want to try this one:

Glaive Squadron Pilot (34)
Juke (2)
TIE/x7 (-2)
Glaive Squadron Pilot (34)
Juke (2)
TIE/x7 (-2)
Carnor Jax (26)
Push the Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Total: 99

What about rage on ryad? Ryad rage! (with mkii of course)

I ran this exact list in my first match of the Scum&Villainy league. It flew really well. I faced a Decivader w/ intel agent and two x7 Deltas. I lost, but that's more me than the list.

I played Omega a bit too aggressively and he went pop in a single round, and I split fire too much. The Deci and 1 Delta were at 1 hull, the other Delta was at 3 hull when my opponent amazingly blocked my full health Maarek from coming back on the board with a perfectly placed BR, intel agent paid off big time for him! There was no move I could have made to not be blocked by some kind of barrel roll, that was well played on his part!

I would run it again, though I may put the Mk2 this time, it would have helped at least once.

I am going to try the RACed Steel list someone posted on here there other day as it look s fun. I cant get enough of these defenders. My favorite list so far is the Glaive x7 x2 with soontir still.

I am starting to love Juke Mareek and Vessery with just Juke and x7 is incredibly strong.

I really want to try this one:

Glaive Squadron Pilot (34)
Juke (2)
TIE/x7 (-2)
Glaive Squadron Pilot (34)
Juke (2)
TIE/x7 (-2)
Carnor Jax (26)
Push the Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Total: 99

I've played with this twice and the juke Glaives are a lot of fun. Unfortunately I suck at flying interceptors.

I've had a lot of fun with the following:

Glaive Squadron Pilot (34) - TIE Defender

Juke (2), TIE/x7 (-2)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (34) - TIE Defender

Juke (2), TIE/x7 (-2)

Carnor Jax (32) - TIE Interceptor

Veteran Instincts (1), Royal Guard TIE (0), Autothrusters (2), Stealth Device (3)

In response to the original post: VI on Rexler is, in my opinion, the best upgrade for him. it protects you from PS 9 super aces like Soontir and Whisper. His ability is pretty much useless, and he's always been used for the PS, not the ability. If you want a 3 ace list, here's my take:

Rexler Brath (37)

TIE/X7 (-2)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (34)

TIE/X7 (-2)

TIE Mk II (1)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Omega Leader (21)

Juke (2)

Comm Relay (3)

Total: 100 points.

Drop Engine upgrade down to TIE Mk II for a 3 pt initiative bid. You suffer from a very slight decrease in damage output by giving up predator, but gain the maneuverability in your ace of Engine Upgrade and a bit higher PS to bump you into the bottom end of the ace range. Omega leader is classically equipped. I'm the kind of pilot that prefers the long game to immediate firepower, as shown in my choice of Veteran Instincts over predator.

These are the list I'm trying out right now

(100)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (37) - TIE Defender

Juke (2), TIE/x7 (-2), Stealth Device (3)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (37) - TIE Defender

Juke (2), TIE/x7 (-2), Stealth Device (3)

"Omega Leader" (26) - TIE/FO Fighter

Juke (2), Comm Relay (3)

(99)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (34) - TIE Defender

Juke (2), TIE/x7 (-2)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (34) - TIE Defender

Juke (2), TIE/x7 (-2)

The Inquisitor (31) - TIE Adv. Prototype

Push The Limit (3), TIE/v1 (1), Autothrusters (2)

Glaive could be replaced with the Countess if you wanted to

This is very similar to something I came up with and have been wanting to run. I also thought about replacing one of the Glaives with Ryad for a bit more tactical flexibility. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Carnor Jax (30)

TIE Interceptor (26)

Intimidation (2), Autothrusters (2)

Canadian Nationals (last weekend) was won with 2 Defenders plus a Palp shuttle.

It was something like Ryad/PtL/x7/mk.2, Vessery/Juke/x7, Omni/Palp.

As the guy who invented the concept of DD I'm of course going to say yes.

Also don't discount any of the named pilots especially not Rexler.

I agree, if you want to go for 2 Defenders and an FO, the following is probably better.

39 Vessery (35), Tie/D title (0), Ion Cannon (3), VI (1)

35 Ryad (34), Tie/x7 title (-2), Push the Limit (3)

Thank you, the lack of the more effective Vessery, the more annoying Ryad and way more efficient Omega Leader was really disturbing. Naturally vessery with /D is easy to kill, so switching back to /7 is possible, frees up points for a MKIIs and a initiative bid.

True enough. Much as Vess loves the double-tap, free Evade tokens really help keep these guys alive.

Maybe give Vess /x7 and Ruthlessness to give him an offensive boost.

36 Vessery (35),Tie/x7 title (-2), Ruthlessness (3), Mk2 (1)

35 Ryad (34), Tie/x7 title (-2), Push the Limit (3), Mk2 (1)
