I played my first game of Armada today and was very impressed with the way a game plays out. I was holding back from purchasing the game as I only wanted to afford one game and X-Wing was it, until now, as my resolve has crumbled.

So my first question is, If I was to get into this game, my logical start is the base set, but what is the best purchase order to make after that, assuming I am going to concentrate on an Imperial force only?

Question 2 is, is it essential to purchase Rebel ships to collect certain key cards that may be required to boost the combat effectiveness of my Imperial ships?

Thanks in advance.

Hi welcome to the game.

Sell your X Wing stuff you won't be needing that anymore :P

Question 1 - Core set, Gladiator, fighter/rogue pack, ISD, raiders. Then buy more of the stuff you like and use more often. For example I have 3 Glads, 2 Vics, 2 ISD's 4 Raiders.

Question 2 - If your wanting all the cards then yes some are available only with rebel ships.

eBay is your friend here - but do your homework. Buying a Nebulon-B on sale may end up costing as much as a single card from the pack. So why not have the ship?

Ebay is your friend for all of this. He's not kidding when he says you'll want ships that are outside the core set to begin with. There are almost always sales somewhere if you shop the net. It takes some time, and you have to wait for your stuff to arrive, but it's the best way to build your fleet.

yes take your time and shop around. there was just a sale and 5 different ships were selling for under 60% off.

amazon is good too. I got into the game initially that way as I had no FLGS to buy it at.

Who did you play? Are they a friend?

You dont really need to build a collection alone in this game, most of the time you wont want the same cards so just build together and share cards....

If you look at Armada Warlords, they list what expansion(s) each card comes from. This can be helpful to identify which Rebel ships you need.

I would recommend getting one of each expansion to gwt the widest variety of cards to play with.

Welcome to the Armada community!

There was a recent thread by someone in exactly your shoes. Read that one here: Prospective player: some Imperial list ideas needed

The first big question, I think, is if you want to play with squadrons or a lot of small ships.

  • If the former, get another Victory and and Imperial-Class, and 2-3 Imperial squadrons sets, and one Rogues & Villains.
  • If the latter, get about 2 or 3 Gladiators and a couple of Raiders.

It is not essential. If you want to play at a high level of competitiveness, then you will want to do so, but right now you just want to play around with the toys that make you happy.

Alright, buy what you want. In Armada, there is no "list to beat" there are lists like that but they don't dominate as much as people think. So you can buy what ever ships you want and build a list around that.

I recommend Armada Warlords for a Fleet builder. It has all the cards on there and will tell you what sets they come from. This way you can read the cards and make decisions.

Each faction has its own sets of cards that come in their boxes. This makes the game fun. You don't have to buy sets that you don't want and you will be fine. FFG has been smart this year and has put many of those exclusive cards up as full picture alternate art cards. So Leading Shots and XI7 Turbolasers you will be able to get from the Spring and Summer Game Night Kit.

Enjoy the depth of the game. It is a hard game with the ability to cause a loss not from dice (though it happens at rare times) but from your mistakes. Learn from them and grow!
