Whisper with Juke...?

By doomshuttle, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have been thinking about Juke on a classic buzzsaw Whisper for two reasons - 1) to further bump the damage output 2) because I almost always take the evade action anyway (because the built in offensive security from gunner)

The problem is of course that this leaves Whisper on PS7 which again leaves her very vulnerable to high PS aces. To mitigate this threat I designed the other half of the list to deal with these in a swift and effective manner, hopefully setting things up for Whisper in the end-game.

But is it a viable tactic? Or will it just be shot to pieces? Haven't seen this list anywhere in the meta.

Whisper (45) - Juke, FCS, ACD, Gunner

OGP (25) - Vader, Electronic Baffle

Black Sq. Pilot (15) - Crack Shot

Black Sq. Pilot (15) - Crack Shot

There are two problems with this idea:

1) at PS 7, whisper becomes a more attractive target: higher PS can shoot at her decloaked, and by shooting at her, the opponent can likely strip the evade so you can't benefit from Juke. So this build kind of only increases aggro on Whisper. However, perhaps with clever deployment you can mitigate this factor somewhat...

2) Doomshuttle + 2 crack TIEs is possibly enough to deal with a single high PS ace (although by no means a sure thing), but if there are two such ships, then you will inevitably end up with Whisper dead, crack spent and struggling to deal with that last ace; or support gone, Whisper still alive but having to deal with that last ace. Obviously, this only matters when there are multiple high PS aces, but given the popularity of PS8 and above, its actually likely to occur in quite a number of matches...

If you feel very confident with either of those two eventualities, then sure, go for it and see how it works out!

Whisper without VI is not an option for 2 reasons. Too many PS 8 or higher pilots too shoot before her and too many ships to move after her to dodge arcs. You might have fun trying it for a few games but you will eventually fall back to VI. Believe me i have tried.

I suppose that you could use Vader with Swarm Tactics to get Whisper firing at PS9 again but it does rather tie 2 ships with very different dials together.

Or Decoy. so you can fly to at least Range 2...

The idea was to avoid the high PS ships with Whisper and hunt them down with the rest of the list - maybe even use Whisper as bait and just not decloak with her unless you are in a really good position.

Sorry, I don't think it's worth it. She's a glass canon. One scratch and she blows up. PS9 and shooting first (then cloaking) at R1 is key to her survival.

A cloaked Phantom is not bait for anyone no matter the PS, and at the lower PS you won't know until too late if you are in a good position.

If not going for Veteran Instincts, I'd maybe try the phantom as suggested below - reasons as given:

  • Echo - Juke, Agent Kallus, Sensor Jammer, Stygium Particle Accelerator

If you're not going for VI, your pilot skill will not let you shoot first against a lot of opponents.

Therefore, Advanced Cloaking Device becomes much less attractive.

If you're going for Juke, you need an evade token to power it.

Therefore, Stygium Particle Accelerator becomes much more attractive.

If you're not using advanced cloak, you're not going to be bouncing in and out of cloak - the phantom becomes more of a....not exactly "one use" attacker, but certainly you need to pick a target and time your attack right.

Therefore, Agent Kallus - who makes you tougher and lets you use your action for barrel rolling

If not going for high pilot skill, you're relying on outthinking rather than out-reacting your opponent, hence Echo's better decloak rule is probably more valuable (especially since Kallus and the Stygium Accelerator lets you use your action to barrel roll as you don't need it to focus or evade)

Finally, if using Juke, you want to give your opponent bad choices about what to do with his focus token. Sensor Jammer is good insurance, especially if they want to trigger deadeye ordnance.
