Yo!
So, in Clone Wars we see Obi-Wan and Luminara use some sort of rope ascension device a la Batman.
What is that?
I know it's not the Merr-Sonn ascension pistol because I don't see either of them firing a pistol...
Anyone have stats on those?

Mechanically speaking, it's probably no different than the Ascension Pistol. Easiest thing to do would be to re-skin that as a handheld grapnel launcher. If it was fired from their wrist, then the Special Modifications book has an armor modification that adds a grapple gun to your armor.

Or the wrist mount attachment from Dangerous Covenants.
It could just be the regular climbing gear as well.

Definitely not this, because if you watch Clone Wars, you see this thing is pretty powerful, both in terms of momentum when it's fired, and the pull, I mean it's like the one Batman has: It supports well over the user's weight, so that it can actually pull you up to a ledge.
You're looking for this.
The description more or less matches the possible types the climbing gear lists (liquid cable). And if it's not that, it's just a variation of the ascension gun mentioned above.
Ok so that says 200m range. Would you guys consider 200m long range for mechanic purposes?
Yes, yes I would.
My general* range bands for personal scale are as follows:
Engaged: 0 to 3 meters;
Short: 2 to 15 meters;
Medium: 10 to 50 meters;
Long: 40 to 500 meters;
Extreme: 400 meters +.
* Very general and subject to variation due to circumstance.
Edited by Absol197If the maximum range for the device is 200m, and a PC is trying to grapple something at the limits of its possible range, I would consider that extreme.
If they're trying to grapple something much closer in a more complex environment (say, a specific branch 50m up through a tangled canopy), I would consider THAT extreme range.
To lock yourself into X-meters = X-range band is a mistake in this system.

Point was; treat it more like a Skill Test/Difficulty Level when considering the difficulty, rather than a Range Band thing.
Point was not; Absol is wrong. If anything it was addressed to baterax who suggested a direct concrete translation in the first place.
Point was; here is an illustrative situation demonstrating how a narrative system can be used.

What I said wasn't about you, it was about trying to be helpful to the community. Sorry if you feel like yours should have been the final word, but again wasn't about you.
Sorry about that; it's hard to figure out who someone is responding to without a quote.
Which I should know by now, because I don't quote people as often as I should!
I am a fan of having absolute range bands (fuzzy though they may be) for when there is no general obstruction, but circumstances can change those bands wildly.
I had no intention of implying that my numbers were the best, nor that numbers should necessarily be used. But, since the item description gives a maximum range, I felt giving the number that I use would be helpful in giving a potential reference frame.
Plus, having seen all the stuff Baterax's players have put him through recently, I felt offering a potential range-band chart might help him ease clearly grid-based wargame players into the system.
Apologies if my intent didn't come through; I admit I could have been much clearer!

This is a GREAT point.
Because the way I was thinking about it was add a black die to each complication.
Like:
Target is moving +1
Target is very small +1
Target is not in direct line of sight +1
Path between player and target has an obstruction +1
Etc. But yeah if 200m is max range of the thing, it makes sense for it to be an extreme check if it's that far away.
