CyborgNinja's Repaints

By CyborgNinja, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

Here's where I think I've finished up an MC40 light cruiser. This was my first try at painting the more organic Mon Cal designs, so there's a few things I'll definitely do differently next time. The original alternate color spotting got washed out, so the hull looks pretty uniform. I think I'm going to try to do a matching MC80 next and see if I can get some tan, gray, and possibly yellow spots to work out.

Feedback/advice is always welcome!

How did you make the cardboard tokens? I see you made some custom cardboard ID to match your ships. But what about ship tiles to sit on bases?

Edited by pasewi

Oh, I just painted over the normal ship tokens, then sealed it with a gloss finish. The ship silhouettes are printed decals applied over the paint.

If you look at DA's thread from about a year ago, he made custom ship tiles that were printable. They're only the thickness of a card, but someone created a guide for adding enough thickness behind it so it matched FFG's tiles. Here's the site where he discusses how you can print them.

Finished a heavy turret corvette with custom tokens.

Hoping to get some Wave 5 squadrons and some modified transports done next.

Looking good mate! Did you scratch build the turret?

Well look at that, someone used to play Battlefleet Gothic!

Dedmanzhand - Thanks! I didn't make it, it's salvaged from an Imperial Cruiser from Battlefleet Gothic. Ha I definitely don't have the skill to scratchbuild something like that.

Aegis - Unfortunately never got the chance, just picked up a few BFG miniatures for a Rogue Trader RPG I was running a few years ago. I haven't figured out a great way to use the extra bits from Ork and Chaos ships yet. They don't quite match the Star Wars aesthetic.

Finished my boosted comms GR-75. Pretty happy with how it turned out - next up is a comms net transport, then I think I have a good bit from BFG for a slicer tools one.

And here are my alternate flotilla freighters together:

Regionals are pretty late around here, so it gave me the chance to actually paint my whole fleet. It will look a lot better than it'll do in the tournament.

Having seen (and played against) these ships in person, I can confirm they look even better up close!

emsgoof - ha thanks. Those interceptors were shredding my squadrons so fast in that last game, you didn't have much time to see them.

I finished my comms net GR-75 just in time for regionals. When I went to drill the hole to magnetize the comm dish, the hull just wasn't thick enough to mount a magnet inside. Still looks pretty good. Next up - a jamming field / slicer's tool transport (might switch up the color scheme..) and an expanded hangars Gozanti.

I decided to try out a relayed Biggsball in our CC campaign - here are the the VCX's and extra X-Wings I needed to paint for it. I tried to pull off Blue Squadron from Rogue One, and the one VCX is supposed to match some of my other irregular squadrons and the Mobquet transport.

I'm stuck in the middle of trying to paint an MC40 to match the Liberty's paint scheme, but it's been a pretty big fail so far.

In the meantime, I finally painted up some a-wings. Green Squadron didn't come out exactly as I'd hoped, but the other two matched what I was going for.

I finished a few random irregular squadrons. Not the best, but they look good enough on the table. This was my first crack at Mel's Nova Courier (using it as an alternate model for the YT-2400) -- hoping to get a bit more of the detail to come out in the next one.

I also made a set of ID tokens using Aurebesh lettering. Just an A/B to start..

Lastly, I have a WIP expanded hangars gozanti. I was happy with how the BFG hangars worked out on the gozanti, but I'm still figuring out how to paint them. Considering a set of white gozantis with dark gray markings.

I * thought * I was seeing BFG parts... nicely done!

a vary intersting customization, can't wait to see it finished!

Been a slow year for painting Armada, but I thought I'd post some updates of what I've done recently:

Over the last couple months, I've been part of a CC Campaign where I made the (disastrous) choice to try a Leia Hammerhead swarm. At first, I thought I'd just paint over FFG's paint job, and that turned out okay (first time I'd tried doing it):

Q4iIs9D.jpg

When that went surprisingly easy, I started doing a gray/yellow paint scheme on my other two to match a CR90 I have. One's done so far....not happy how the white highlights turned out, probably should have gone for just a different tone of gray

eJWs5sg.jpg

The other (poorly chosen) element to my CC fleet was a strong mix of rogue squadrons. Here's Han, Ketsu, and Corran. This was my first time doing E-Wings, and I wasn't crazy about the result.

EtFUMVL.jpg

The list theme was supposed to be Leia and Han (again --- bad call, at least for me haha), so I wanted a flotilla with freighters of Han's smuggling associates. The Xiytiar Transport was my first purchase in BHDA --- the detail was off from FUD, but for a flotilla replacement it turned out pretty good:

For the (originally) 4 hammerheads, I made a full set of Aurebesh tokens that looked pretty good. The hammerheads blew up so much, 2 got dropped for our upcoming all-out assault so I could sqeeze in a Liberty and hopefully register at least one ship kill during the game.

(Advice is always welcome....)

For non-campaign stuff, I've only finished some odds and ends....

Dagger Squadron (with some older B-Wings):

I rarely play Imperials, but I've enjoyed going with a white/light-gray paint motif on the TIEs. I wasn't happy with how the Jumpmaster finished up, but it's fine for how little it'll get used:

I finally got a Mon Cal paint scheme that matches the original look of Home One as best as I can manage. The photo doesn't quite do it justice -- the highlighted edges come across a bit better than this:

Mp5FwyQ.jpg

I've been trying to get my Home One paint scheme down, because a year ago I picked up the 3.2km-sized MC80 from Mel's when it was on a really great sale. Right now, I've been just wishing GW sold Rakarth Flesh in a spray can...

I have a couple stormtrooper transports from the X-Wing video games painted up, and I use them to show which Gozanti is Suppressor (which is like a mini boarding trooper effect anyway). Realizing now these photos don't do a great job of showing off the stormtrooper transports, but you get a decent feel of what the whole flotilla looks like on the board...

DrEsHwP.jpg

@DScipio You mentioned using the stormtrooper transports awhile back, so I thought I'd tag you here.

@Church14 You mentioned in that same thread really enjoying the x-wing enhanced flotillas, so thought you'd like this too.

i love the somber and clean look of your ships. so beautiful.

@NebulonB --- hey, thanks, really appreciate the complement

We just ended our Corellian Conflict yesterday --- Rebels got as close to getting tabled as you get in the final battle.

One last shot of my fleet --- the Liberty was a late addition, so I didn't get a chance to paint it.

Painting LVP goes to the too-lightly-blue lead Skipray Blastboat that must be piloted by Tobias Funke or something. Gotta hit that thing with some Nuln Oil and try again.

Shout out to visionary creator of combination psychological analysis and therapy...

This is a beautiful looking fleet, and I actually love that Skipray haha

Where are the Activation sliders from? They look great!

I'll second that!

The Blastboats are nice and those sliders look great. All of your squadrons look fantastic, even the horribly-sculpted X-Wings. Those two Hammerheads look really somber and striking. Very, very nice!

@Themodalnodes & @SFC Snuffy --- Thanks for the compliments. It looked way, way, way better than it flew...

I'll post a before / after shot after I fix up that center Skipray, see what you guys think. The gray ones are solid, the all blue just needs to be toned down a shade for store lighting.

The acrylic sliders are from CorSec Engineering --- they look really nice, but they're just a little too thick. So, sometimes a squad stand just crumbles when the peg can't sit in the base well enough, and they can easily get kicked to the wrong color when you're moving things around on the board.

But they do look really good haha: http://www.corseceng.com/blog/2015/4/9/new-products-star-wars-armada-accessories.html

Not done yet, but here are some shots of the almost-finished 3.2km MC80 from Mel's on the table for a game.

That looks amazingly beautiful!
