ARC-170 preview article is up

Alliance Overhaul

the Alliance Overhaul Title upgrade ensures that the ARC-170's auxiliary firing arc enters the game as more than just a free firing arc. It also introduces a new decision point: do you aim to keep your foes in your primary firing arc and roll three attack dice, or do you allow them to slip into your auxiliary firing arc, hoping to convert a black-attack02.png result into a black-attack01.png ? The choice becomes more meaningful as you consider how to equip your ship. As an example, the new Tail Gunner crew upgrade goes a long way toward making shots from your auxiliary firing arc more attractive.

By this point, you've likely noticed some of the potential synergies the different ARC-170 pilots enable. Still, the ship and the expansion promote myriad synergistic interactions that go far beyond its pilots' abilities.

First and foremost, with its unique pairing of crew and astromech slots, the ARC-170 invites you to revisit two whole categories of upgrades in new context.

In this diagram, Norra Wexley reveals a green speed "2" right bank, which means that (1) BB-8 allows her to barrel roll right. (2) She uses to Push the Limit after her barrel roll to deploy her Conner Net and then (3) completes her green maneuver to clear her stress. Finally, Norra focuses, ready to take a clear shot at the Emperor's Lambda -class shuttle.

They've edited it to include links to the pictures of R3 Astromech (You may cancel a focus result while attacking to get an evade token, 2 points) and Vectored Thrusters (2 point Barrel roll mod for small ships).

What is not spoiled is what seeker(?) Torpedo does, and the dial.

Tail gunner is in love with Scum Kath. Will play it in tournament the moment I get it,

Braylen also solid

Looks like the Firespray just got an auto-include.

Tail Gunner is going to live on Scum Kath.

So, Norra Wexley, R3, Juke?

R3 Astromech seems to be hot steaming garbage. It is almost literally useless on generics, because they'll get their evade token after they fire. Aces will always take regen. Is there something I'm not seeing?

Even on Norra, I think it's bad.

This actually makes me fairly frustrated, because every ship with the astromech slot needed a buff, and it seems to be really bad. I'm willing to eat crow on this if someone comes up with a cool combo, but giving up firepower seems like way too steep a price.

Um, sure, using PTL to drop a bomb...

Vectored trusters only 2 points? Now this is a gift for Kirghaz, it might even make Cobra playable

Can't use push the limit to drop a bomb.

Oh well, they can still fix it by including experimental interface instead ;)

Um, sure, using PTL to drop a bomb...

indeed. It would help if they could read their own card text.

Oh just feck off with the regen, dare to do something different.

Norra, Juke, R3:

Roll for attack, spend TL to gain a Focus, cancel the focus to gain an evade during modify attack, turn an evade result into focus when attacking during modify defense dice

Juke, maybe? If you don't have a focus for whatever reason, or want to save it for a later attack or defending or regen.

Um, sure, using PTL to drop a bomb...

Sure, why not?

This is beautiful. Crew and Astromech together, Vectored Thrusters, Tail Gunner, and some new pilot abilities! I'll be nabbing two of these whenever they release!

it's an FFG tradition to not know how their bomb mechanics work, and then include some cool illustration of how the game does not work, in an effort to sell ships that don't work as advertised.

It was there in the first place, it just took me a minute to find them. =P They're edited into my OP now.

It's a godsend for the Kihraxz. I've been playing Talonbane Cobra with Expert Handling just to give him a barrel roll and the ship is great with it. This will be even better, freeing up the EPT slot (maybe for Predator?)

:)

Sweet

:)

Oh wow tail gunner is pretty **** good.

Put that on Scum Kath plus Outmaneuver for a -2agi rear arc attack, since your aux arc counts for "firing arc" it works that way.

Also i kinda like R3. Kinda. He doesnt sound crazy powerful but interesting. For 2pts, not bad

Though im a little disappointed in the pilot abilities. The destress on a hit or crit sounds interesting but unless that thing has some crucial turns that happen to be red (btw, stress assign and that ability sound like they happen simo so guess what, red move destress immediately!) it isnt that great since we know it has a ton of greens.

The free action at face value is pretty moot. It has a pseudo biggs effect, since if you target him he doesnt get the action, but with only 2 actions in the bar (3 if you add Vectored) and already used one that round, most likely anyway, not that amazing. Especially if stressed.

Sharing the TL could be mean. Could be.

Though the PTL into conner is comical... EI would have been better for the demo

Cluster Mines

Proximity Mines

Conner Nets

How could you not drop those with PtL?

Huh? Why not?

EDIT : Disregard, I understand the shortcoming, now. It would have to be Experimental Interface.

Yeah but it just killed any hope for t-65 fans.

R3 is crap as well.

Oh FFG article writers... How much cooler is the game when you can ignore rules.

So outfitted, Norra can fly into Range "1" of an enemy ship and focus, before using her Experimental Interface to trigger her Expose. Or if she's just outside of Range "1," she can Expose and have her R7-T1 astromech boost her into Range "1" of her target. Counting the extra black-attack02.png result she gets by spending her target lock during her attack, she effectively attacks with seven dice.

This math is either off or I'm crazy and missing something obvious.

Base: 2

Alliance Overhaul: 3

Range 1: 4

Expose: 5

Add the focus and it's 6 not 7..

What am I missing?

R3 is basically budget regen if you're expecting to be taking shots. Avoiding a damage is not as good as regenerating one (except to avoid 'hit' effects), but it's something. The killer is that you're giving up damage and it's not that reliable. Juke sort of gets around the damage drop, but it's still not great.

Juke Norra seems best, but it's still kinda weak until PS declines. Maybe a good reason to get The PS5 HWK pilot in a list. That seems pretty janky, though.
