Building something forgiving for my son

By AT Leader, in X-Wing

I want some advice in building a list for my son (100 pts) that is forgiving. I am thinking probably something imperial using the Lambda and Firespray as he loves them both! I just started thinking about this so I'll come up with a list and post it! I also want to buy a YT-2400 for Dash soon that i think he woild like so I am open to Rebel lists, or even the Scum and Villany of the galaxy.

Like how forgiving do you need this to be? Is he:

1.) Very unfamiliar with the rules of the game and general strategy and visualization? Like has only played a few times, perhaps even never? Quad TLT. Or Super Dash. Hyper new players tend to asteroid large bases instantly, so something like double deci is out. Some sort of quad accuracy corrector squad would also be good, all he has to worry about is maneuvering and evading or the occasional barrel roll and turret ships aren't very good at teaching the game to someone.

Or is he:

2.) Familiar enough with the game, but just bad at it and needs a squad that will carry him. Build him a palp aces squad with a one or both of the aces as juke x7 Defenders.

If you want a forgiving ship it's hard to beat Chewbacca loaded with Dash and Gunner. The Falcon means you don't need to worry about getting a ship in arc so much. Chewbacca generally means you don't need to worry about face-up damage cards. Gunner means that if the attack misses you get to shoot again. Dash means that even if you land the Falcon on a rock due to poor maneuvering it can still shoot. You could even add and EPT, title, and/or a modification for further effect. Now if you're looking to reach 100 points what you'd pair this with can vary.

Or...

3) Familiar with the game; might be an ok player for his age, but at the end of the day is still a child and so the OP wants a list that is enjoyable, but not too complex and can survive some 'user error'.

Oh I'm sorry, I forgot that this place is a hugbox and that no one is ever bad at the game. I'm sorry for not replacing 'bad' with the proper euphemism which would be, "might be an ok player for his age but is still a child."

I should probably also replace, "needs a squad that can carry" with, "needs a squad that can survive some user error."

It's no wonder this place is a pansy hugbox, we have a 15 page My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic thread in the off-topic sub-forum going.

I know it's hard, everyone, but please do not feed the troll.

If you're going for "forgiving", I would prioritize hit points (hull and shields) over agility, set aside any powerful but complex abilities or interactions, and make sure it doesn't rely too much on getting actions or outmaneuvering the opponent.

With those things in mind, and without knowing exactly what you have, I'd give him something like this:

Chewbacca (42)

Marksmanship (3)

Gunner (5)

Millennium Falcon (1)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Fire-Control System (2)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Fire-Control System (2)

Total: 99

View in Yet Another Squad Builder

Colonel Jendon (Lambda) with ST-321 and Weapons Engineer (32 pts)

Howlrunner with Swarm Tactics (20 pts)

Night Beast (15 pts)

2 x Black Squadron Pilot with Crack Shot

Totals to 97 with enough ships to be forgiving and a few good tricks without being too complicated.

For his age he has a good grasp on the game, but hasn't developed good spatial awareness of how the ships move yet. I think SuperDash/Dash Crew would be awesome, and that is the next expansion I plan on picking up. For the time being I want something that is going to keep him in the game (survivability) and will be forgiving of poor spatial judgement (Dash). I also like the Chewie with Dash crew idea once I have the YT-2400.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Keep them coming!

There is a world of difference between being bad, being good, and everything in between. There is also a huge difference between playing this game as a child and playing this game as an adult. Kids think about things in different ways to adults and you need to factor that in when teaching them how to play games. Any parent (and most well rounded individuals) know this; hence the OP seeking our advice in helping his kid.

We all know you revel in being hugely unpleasant when it comes to this game and the people who play it, but how about you just keep it to yourself for once.

I ended up playing a pretty young kid who was flying a Gunner Chewie with two TLT Y-Wings at Yavin. The straight-forwardness of it almost took me off guard and I only managed a slim victory.

But it seemed like a list that encouraged good, basic flying. I guess when your attacks are reliable enough then positioning becomes your main focus.

One list I saw that is learning friendly is this scum list I saw brought to a store tourney: the details are unclear, but someone around here can probably fill in the gaps.

3x y-wings (syndicate thugs, I think) with autoblaster and unhinged astromech.

And a jumpmaster. (Super fog here, pretty sure it was CS deadeye, but there's 37 pts to be accounted for)

The 3 y's fly in formation ahead of the jumpmaster. The green 3's are there to get into engagement and the autoblasters are there to shotgun whatever gets near the y-swarm.

It seems to be a good learning list, teaching formation flight, keeping range, and forgiving, too.

Lone Wolf Falcon Chewbakka with Luke(Gunner) and Dash(Crew) is the king of simplicity.

After that add two Red Squadron X-wings or two Rookies with targeting astros and you're good to go.

It's called being a respectful human being... Maybe a new concept to you mate, but you should try it sometime, best thing is it's free.

You know nothing about the OP or his child and you carry on like a ****, penultimate keyboard warrior.

If being a respectful human is anathema to you, maybe you shouldn't post here.

Not sure what you have available in the way of ships, but if you have a Decimator:

Boba Fett

Adaptability

Navigator

Engine Upgrade

Rear Admiral Chiraneau

Adaptability

Navigator

Engine Upgrade

It gives repositioning to both large ships, with Fett having a choice of all six bank maneuvers to keep someone in arc or dodge out of one.

Here's a list that I think could be used pretty easily by a younger player.

It'd be preferable...

Decimator with 2x x7 defenders stick isard on there it's got no complicated things to remember it's alot of hit points.

Chewie w/ Jan Ors + Recon Spec + Millenium Falcon + Push the Limit
2x Red Squadron pilot (T65) w/ astromech R2 + integrated Astromech

I made this list for my wife who only play casually. Just explain the trick to get 2x evades & a focus tokens each turn on chewie (focus action > double with recon spe > swap first focus for an evade with jan ors > push the limit > evade with tittle).

"bulkier is better".
try to avoid Low-Health Ace : you lost them on your mistakes... That can be frustrating.
If your son like to play the firespray, I'm okay with Dagonet : Imperial Boba Fett + Navigator is a nice way to learn how to fly the the ship. You can also play with the scum Boba w/ Gunner + Engine Upgrade. The Gunner let you boost to correct a misplay on the maneuver without lost some efficiency in offense. You can also add a Inertial Damper to let him make a 0-speed to avoid some roadblocks.

Certainly not the easiest of lists, and definitely not the easiest to master, bit it sure is fluffy. :)

For rebels, I think I like that Chewbacca+ 2x TLT list mentioned above. Not too much thinking, but still encouraging proper flying, and relatively unscathed by bumps and other such errors.

I prefer Chewie with two x-wings - three turret ships might give the young'n a warped view of how the game is played...

Certainly not the easiest of lists, and definitely not the easiest to master, bit it sure is fluffy. :)

I was going for a list that is easy to maneuver. The list I came up with is pretty much impossible to block the Ghost. You just pick a green or red maneuver each round. You're right, it might take a while to master, but I think even a novice will do okay with it.

Chewbacca plus 2x TLT is quite good, of course.

I find scum boba fett plus 2x TLT Y wings easy enough, the strategy is really simple with boba and engine upgrade you want to be at range one almost no matter what to get bobas hability going, you can even survive a swarm with glitterstim and the rerolls if you happen to go for a joust, which is not recommended imo. And with the Ywings you want to be at range 3, behind boba to try to focus fire. Boba does not even care on bumping often since you get the reroll for everything anyway. I run boba with tactician since veteran instincts allows me to hunt some aces to stress them but if that is a little too complex you can swap the crew slot.

Boba Fett (Scum) (39)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Tactician (2)
Glitterstim (2)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Syndicate Thug (18)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
R4 Agromech (2)
BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)
Syndicate Thug (18)

R4 agromech is not that good since the faq change but you could try and go for overclocked, which makes you a little bit predictable but your strategy is simple enough it might not matter. That and swaping VI for adaptavility allows you to change the crew for gunner.
Boba Fett (Scum) (39)
Adaptability (0)

Glitterstim (2)

Aggromech would be fine there as you're spending the focus in combat - it's only Deadeye and Blaster Turrets that have suffered.

I actually like the decimator + 2 x7 defender list as a newbie-friendly imperial one. Possibly oicunn and 2pts of either EPT or crew? Just that little bit extra leeway when ramming a foe is a bonus rather than a disappointment ;)

Very much this - in fact it makes a pretty beefy TLT because you get to modify both attacks still, don't you? Focus on the first, reroll on the second.

If you're flying adaptability on Boba, I'd just go for VI+Dengar kavil, because that girl is hilarious and a little less fussed about range bubbles than the big boss. But there are lots of options, truly!
