UK Based wooden Component Decks - Version 1

By ManInTheBox, in Star Wars: Armada

I've been watching the cottage industry of Armada accessories with a lot of interest. I've also been watching with a degree of jealousy for the players in the U.S. as they had a much cheaper deal on postage and didn't have to contend with import fees as all of the command decks I had seen were made there.

At the end of 2015 I decided to have a go at making my own to match the component layout that I used for my own games. After a fair bit of development and testing with different methods and materials (and a lot of time lost to the real world, work, etc.), I settled on a method that gets really good results.

Each board is CNC cut from high grade (B/BB) 9mm birch ply and finished by hand. I designed them with the following benefits:
  • Light and strong.
  • 3 different sizes, 2 slots, 4 slots and 6 slots for upgrade cards.
  • They look great unfinished, but can also be varnished, painted, stained etc.
  • Slots large enough to accommodate cards sleeved in the (largish) official FFG sleeves.
  • FFG sleeved cards will also hold themselves in the Command Deck with their corners just pinning them in place so that they won't fall out if turned upside down. This makes them ideal for pre-loading before tournaments and slipping into a bag for ultra fast setup.
  • Finger cut-outs to easily remove upgrade cards from slots, for easy access to exhaust them during a game.
  • Defence Tokens overhang the edge of the deck for easy access to exhaust them.
  • Space for the ship number/Capital Ship token.
  • 6" tall, so that they perfectly fit on the border of 4' table.
I had quite a lot spare and was asked by other players if they could buy some, so I started taking feedback for improvements for the next version.
I was having trouble keeping hold of the different threads where people were contacting me to ask about boards so I've set up a Facebook page to keep all the information in one place. You can visit it to get in contact, ask questions, see development updates on new versions and register your interest to buy decks as soon as I have them available.

I have a small number of Version 1 decks left over from the first batch. If you are interested in buying any then please reply to the pinned post so I can let you know as soon as they're ready. I will send a notification to everyone who replies to that post as soon as the decks are sanded and quality-checked.

If you don't manage to get any of the V1 decks then don't worry as I will have the V2 decks ready as soon as I can, but they may not be in time for UK Nationals (in case you were waiting for that). The version 2 will include space for 4 Command Tokens and a modular design so upgrade card slots can be added and mixed as needed.

I'm really interested in feedback on these decks so please feel free to ask any questions or make suggestions here. I've been bowled over with the response to these decks, which I initially just made as a personal project. I certainly didn't plan to set up as a business so please bear with me as I get things in place to be able to make the experience smoother and more professional.

Thanks for looking!

Ben

Nice. I replied on FB.

Thanks! I'm out for the day now so sorry for no replies to this topic for a while.

How much would using something a bit higher quality than plywood affect cost?

How much?

How to order? Ebay? Website? Shop?

Can I pay with PayPal?

:) :) :)

Gink you old snob you....

Good question. Birch ply is pretty high quality compared to the normal stuff, so it's probably a lot better than you think. However, I'm not averse to using other materials. No idea on the cost as I'd have to source it to have an idea. Let me put that on the back burner until I've at least got Version 2 out and I'll investigate. I can also try out other materials such as acrylic stone material s (like Hi-Macs)

EDIT: Did you have anything in mind in particular?

Oh yeah! Prices for this Version are £6, £8, £10 for the 2, 4 and 6 slot respectively. However there's almost no 2s and 6s left.

Quick answer, have a look at the FB page for order info. I'll post up when I have some ready to go. Sorry to be brief. Waiting for Stevie Wonder in Hyde Park!

EDIT: Sorry for the rushed reply earlier. Here's the slightly more comprehensive answer.

How much

Prices for the V1 boards are as listed above. The V2 will be slightly more expensive as there will be more work and materials going into them to make them modular. However should work out cheaper if you are buying for your whole fleet, as you will be able to buy as many ship decks as you need, then mix and match the modular upgrade slots, depending on the fleet. Overall you won't need to buy as much to cover every combination you might need.

I'll be selling these last V1s direct using Paypal. However once I have the V2s I'll set up an Ebay or Etsy listing to automate everything, so you'll still be able to use Paypal there too.

I'll also get some prices up for postage abroad. I didn't expect any interest from the States or Canada but I've already had someone ask, so I'll put up prices for that with the V2 listing.

These are beautiful!

I'm especially interested in the v.2 modular design: do you have any picture of it yet? Also, is there any kind of discount for buying large (8+) quantities of said decks?

Those look good.

Once they arrive spend 2 mins with some sand paper then give it a coat of Ronseal.

Thank you! That's really flattering, and very kind.

I'm hoping to do a test cut of the V2 boards this week. I do have a video of a prototype of the modular attachment system but it's using scrap boards from my first cut and when I put something out there, I want it to look great, not scrappy!

However I can tell you that the V.2 will split the ship components from the upgrade cards. The ship deck will look the same except there will be recesses for 4 Command Tokens, in the same place that there are currently 3.

I'm not sure about discounts yet. I've got to do my maths on all the costs to work out what the V.2 will cost. Maybe I could look at putting together a few packages with a discount on the total cost of each. Is that something people would be interested in?

Cheers Mad Cat. They already get finished by hand to take all the cutting burrs off and smooth down the base of the rebates. I'm not offering these coated just yet as I want to get the V.2s made and out the door first. After that I'll look at other finishing options.

I've got access to a professional spray booth at work so will try some different finishes.

Hi everyone. I've got a small number of boards left for sale. If you're interested then please visit this Facebook thread to reserve any decks you want: https://www.facebook.com/ComponentDecks/posts/1148384965200869

Sorry that I have to do it in a roundabout way, via Facebook, but it's the only way I can fairly allocate what's left on a first come, first served basis.

I am working on the V2 board and when I have those ready I will have a proper e-commerce solution. I expect that it will be a few weeks at least before I am ready to offer those for sale. I'll post back here with updates when I have them.
