Painting Bases

By AT Leader, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Any tips for painting bases?

For example:

Should I do it with pegs in or out?

Do I need to paint the underside?

And anything you deem necessary!

Paint them black then springle on some white dots ;) do them assembled and from the top only (it's pointless to pay the underside withnthis method.

If you play on the FFG mat Anthracide Gray blends better with it.

I used this method for Armada.

1. I put the pegs in, but I masked off the male nipple at the top with small bits of masking tape.

2. I painted several light coats with matte black krylon rattle-can.

3. I then took the pegs out and painted the bottom ends that were shadowed by the base, making sure not to spray into the female end.

4. I also turned the bases face down and painted the underside lightly. You don't really need to do this, but I'm happy I did so. The texture of the paint makes the base slightly grippier on the mat.

WARNING

The thickness of the paint makes the cardboard plaques fit more snugly into the base. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but just beware of the consequences if you apply too much paint.

I have seen others do this as well, and I have been completely underwhelmed each and every time...until now. Yours look amazing. Well done! :D

Thanks! I'll post pics when I get around to finally doing it!

For 'painting' the white dots, first grab an old toothbrush. Dip the bristles of the paintbrush into a little bit of paint (in this case white), and then aim the end of the toothbrush at your base and then 'flick' the bristles by rubbing your thumb down the bristles from the tip to the handle. This will take a little practice to get the right amount of paint and to work out your aim, and will also make a bit of a mess. So just make sure not to use your mums best table cloth as a drop cloth (or use your mums toothbrush...!!), and you should be golden. Or should I say, stellar. ;)

I had a lot of success with my first matte black batch! Pics coming. I tried to do a fluorescent green that failed HORRIBLY! Any tips for stripping paint off the pegs and bases? What could I soak them in to loosen the paint to be gently removed without damage?
