Prospective player: some Imperial list ideas needed

By LordBlades, in Star Wars: Armada

Hello,

I'm a rather experienced x-wing player and I've been thinking about getting into Armada as well for quite a while (it's been a toss-up between Armada and Warmachine for a long time, but that's beside the point) and it looks like it might be finally happening in the near future :)

Therefore, I'd need a couple of suggestions regarding what to aim (purchase-wise for my first list).

I've decided to play Empire so I'm interested in Imperial lists obviously :)

What I'm looking for is:

-A list fit for a rookie (so not something overly complicated or with a very low floor, that requires you to play super good before you even start to do well with it)

-Something that doesn't require a ton of extra purchases (I'd rather not have to buy 10 extra expansions from the get go just for the cards)

-Something that includes an ISD (like the model a lot)

Any suggestions ?

Right off the bat if you buy the core, isd, a gsd, and 1-2 fighter packs you should be good for a while

Will allow. You to experience a lot of different things and test what you like

Welcome to the Imperial Navy! (Do you also fly for the Empire in X-Wing? I do the Empire for both X-Wing and Armada.)

To start off with, it's probably good just to use things that help you get a feel for stuff. Don't kit out your star destroyers with too many complicated upgrades that you'll forget about during play. At this point it's not about points efficiency/effectiveness, it's about practice.

This should work for you, but feel free to dive in for more complexity if that's your speed.

ISDII + Electronic Countermeasures + Enhanced Armament

I mainly fly Scum in X-wing. I did dabble in Rebels for a while, and recently switched to Empire as my 2nd faction (finally managed to get a decent deal on a Palpatine on e-bay) and they look tons of fun.

Thanks to everyone who replied, now I need to look what everything you suggested does :)

On that note, I see both of you recommend Motti as commander (and I've seen him often in the Armada vids I watched on Youtube). I take it buying a Victory expansion even though I'd have one from Core and don't intend to field two is a good investment then?

If you like the scum from xwing get a rouge and villains pack. The empire ships available are some of the most versatile fighters in the game. The fielding two is up to you however there are some good cards for any carriers you wish to build that are available only in the victory expansion.

I feel you on that dilemma. I wasn't thinking about that when I recommended Motti.

I don't like to buy expansions for just a card or two either. Right now the VSD is also out of favor, but I think it's still very good as a carrier, which is how I built it here. It does however come with a number of great cards, not just the big favorite: Motti. It also comes with Flight Controllers (currently unique to the VSD expansion) and Intel Officer (which also comes in the Neb-B expansion). Furthermore, you also get more Expanded Hangars and Gunnery Teams, which you'll want more of than just what's in the Core Set.

Maybe a thing to do is to think about what sort of list you might enjoy playing more. Do you like 'multiple small units' that can swarm the enemy? Do you think you'll enjoy the squadron game (which is currently dominated by bombers)? Or do you want big heavy hitters?

Add a raider in there too. Nice cards in it and little cute ship to pew with.

You could also use screed instead (I actually prefer screed motti is just REALLY easy) if you don't want to get the vsd yet

Honestly. I'd run PT 106's list. Any list is probably going to take some time to get used to maneuvering and doing well in the game of Armada, but you asked for something that isn't too complicated, and it really fits the bill.

ISD-I x2

Intel Officer, Ordinance Experts

Raider I x3 (one of them has Motti)

It is simple in that you don't have to mess around with the squadron game at all. It is also simple in that I'd recommend just running Nav to start with the ISDs. As you gain experience, you'll get a better sense of when to change out for another command, but Nav is bread and butter in this list, and almost always the right command. Raiders can change their dial every turn, which will include a lot of Nav, but you ought to be able to anticipate when the opponent will be in range for a Concentrate Fire. It will take some practice to learn how to handle squadrons and carrier fleets with your ships, but its a solid list that PT has used to win two regionals. Its fun to play, and that's the big draw, period. We play games to have fun, and who doesn't like having a couple of ISDs on the table.
