Canadian Nationals - 2 terrible years in a row.

By Kalandros, in X-Wing

There's no reason they cannot announce this months sooner. Regionals being over or not doesn't matter at all.

Again, more events would solve this problem...

One would think someone up there could think hey lets do more events on the weekends and with plenty of notice ahead of time. Is someone trying to not let x-wing live there?

All I can say is its lion rampant.

Piss poor distributor

I don't understand ... everything the OP complains about is how U.S. Nationals at Origins worked this year and how North American Championships at GenCon works every year. You pay to get into the convention as well as a tournament fee, you play a qualifier on a weekday (your choice of Thursday or Friday at Origins and GenCon) and you play the top cut on Saturday. Yes, you need hotel nights lined up to accommodate the multiple days. That's just how this stuff works. If you don't make the cut, well, you have admission to the convention, so maybe check that out and enjoy it.

Your distributor isn't screwing you over, it's just doing exactly what FFG does -- and exactly what other companies that own tournament games do.

The OP is at least alleging that there are issues with the Canadian event that are not present with respect to the other national events.

Regardless of whether or not anyone is being treated unfairly, hopefully you just forgot to think and normally would realize that "everyone else does it" is not a meaningful response a call for change.

The OP is doing no such thing.

His complaint is that the event is at a convention, with qualifiers on a weekday, and being run over two days. All of which apply to both Nationals and the NA Championships. On any given year it will also apply to Worlds, depending if they put X-wing on a week day.

He then goes on to act as if that makes it impossible for people to attend, which is a farsical statement. It may make it impossible for the OP to attend, but somehow events run with the exact same format constantly sell out.

Toq brought up a very valid point in relation to the needlessly late event announcement, but there is absolutely nothing about the event format that makes it inherently unsuccessful. As other events are run the same way and still have strong attendance.

Last year Lion Rampant had the Nationals setup in a convention in which you had to pay convention entrance price and then tournament fee.

Only 26 showed up for the double door price.

This year, they decided Friday 1PM was a good idea to start the tournament at, with the top cut being Saturday.

If you got a job, you're not going. If you're not living close - you might waste your money by taking a room for friday to saturday, because if you don't make the cut, you probably won't want to stay and if you don't take a room and make it to the cut.. well its not high season but still.

Whoever organizes these really doesn't understand how the world works.

As it is starting 1PM, which gives you the whole morning to travel to the location, you will be playing anyway till late night, no matter if you make the cut or not. So you need a room either way. And claiming to have a job and not being able to take a day or two off is one of the lamest excuses ever. If the event is saturday / sunday then you get the people with jobs who want to leave early, because they have to work monday. It's all the same.

Naturally if only 20 or 30 people are coming anyway, you could do it all on a saturday and be done with it. Because in that case it does not count as large event anyway. ;-)

Interesting that I'll come back and add a defense for LR but yeah...

It's too early to judge them on this years performance until they actually run it. I have a long history of unhappiness with this particular distributor and last year was a terrible showing, but maybe lessons learned.

Hey, anybody know if it's just FFG stuff running? It's not fan expo. Is there a convention I'm not aware of?

First person to hit me with a Facebook remark gets a rather grumpy responce for the snark.

As far as I can tell, its not affilated with a Convention this year... It is just the FFG Nationals in the Hotel.

Their Pricing basically states its just for the events, no mention of having to get any other convention-related ticket...

So at this point, unless something else comes up - its just FFG Nationals.

The convention thing was last year and it was heavily boycotted - 26 attendants for something that should have had over a hundred really made it clear.

I'm just terribly disappointed that I'm automatically unable to attend because its on a friday.

So, I guess you missed the part where he said that less than 30 people showed up for a similarly run event last year? The point of these events, particularly the higher level versions, is that players attend. Just because you do not have a problem with the format or because other events are run in a similar way does not mean that the format will work where the OP is.

It is fine if you want to choose a side based on something other than considering ALL of the facts, but do not make posts where you transparently skip critical points.

All I can say is its lion rampant.

Piss poor distributor

If you think LR is bad you don't want to know how bad things are in Eastern Europe and Russia

>_>

So, I guess you missed the part where he said that less than 30 people showed up for a similarly run event last year?

And you missed the part where Last Years organisation was also tied to the FANEXPO side of things, where you needed a convention ticket as well as the Event Ticket for FFG...

Which is not happening this year, by most accounts. This time, its being held separately, on its own, in its own place...

Which makes the only common denominator for the event "Being run by Lion Rampant", not a similar event at all, as they are not beholden to the FANEXPO side of things at all now.

In Brazil we didn't have any National competition so far. And our distribuot is really bad when it comes to supporting and setting up these kinds of competitive events.

It seems most distributors outside US aren't really that good :/

Maybe FFG should negotiate with more than one distributor per country, or at least put some big retailers in the game?

At least give them some reason to set things up and promote the game. In some cases it's the sh*tty distributor or importing the ships (that's not even an option depending on the country) so they kinda have it all too easy to sell the ships and feels like they are lazy about it.

Nah, Europe seems to be run just fine.

....aaaaand first wave sold out in 2 minutes!

Congrats on those who pulled one of those, I know at least 4 locals did. I'm glad I gave up on the dream before it went on same, missing out would have sucked.

Hopefully it's streamed!

The distributor has already posted a link where people can sign up to get news if/when they get more spots.

....aaaaand first wave sold out in 2 minutes!

sounds like a lot of people were perfectly fine with the setup

well i decided to skip it, i had a reserved spot and though i can make it friday since i work sunday to thursday the fact that the elimination rounds only start a 17:30 the next day is beyond stupid, not only do i need a hotel room for friday night if i make top 8 or 16 but i also need one for saturday because of this stupidity.

I believe there are over 100+ already signed up around 50 spots still left.

If someone regrets buying a ticket for the event, sell it to me so I can go! Haha.

Buy your ticket yourself right now. It will be great if you can come and bring a bunch of your friends.
