Overlaped but models too big

By Flabiom, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Been playing with the YT-1300 and the ship is so big it causes overlap problems

When an overlap occurs, the bases can't touch because the edges of the model go past the base. We play the best we can, but wondering if others have encountered this and what is the official work around for this situation.

Use extra/fewer pylons to raise/lower ships so the models don't collide.

It's also pretty common to just temporarily remove your ship from its base until the ships have passed each other.

Take the model off the base. Replac when you can safely do so.

I like to put my Oicunn on an epic ship stand.

Officially: Alter stand heights until there is no longer any interference. Certainly that is alway possible ;)

Practical: Just take the model off the base while it could cause interference. I means it's not like the model is actually needed to play the game in any way except that the official rules call of it at all times.

Beautiful, guys! It didn't even occur to me to remove the model from the base. The visual of the ship is so much a part of the game when playing, but you do what you have to do. Don't want to put on higher pegs cause I've had them crack on me. Glad they are now selling the replacements. need to get me a few.

But officially play can NOT continue while a model is off of its base! Of course part of me is thinking there are some ships situations where ships overhang far enough that it is practically impossible to find enough pegs to get them to clear each other.

I've also argued that while the ship models certain do provide a wonderful visual for playing the game the actual models are the least important piece in the game. The base tile should already tell you want the ship is and all of its statistics (the model only says what the ship is) and direct you to the pilot card which adds even more information. Pull the models and you can still play but pull anything else and the game changes to something else.

you pretty much have to take the ships off the base. Large ships especially dont take to kindly to being really high in the air from many pegs, small ships usually get away with it.

The VCX is a particular problem for this, because it's not able to alter its height, and IIRC even with no pegs at all the YV666 still doesn't fit underneath in certain configurations.

FFG don't seem to have a big problem with removing a large ship from it's base should the need arise. Paul Heaver did just that in a World Championship match and no one screamed foul. If it will allow play to continue unhindered, then fine. Just replace the model at the earliest opportunity. And it's pretty much accepted that putting more pegs on to raise a large ship makes them extremely ungainly.

The thing that amuses me most about this game can be found in the Learn to Play rulebook Game Overview.

In X-Wing, two players engage in an exciting, fast-paced dogfight in the Star Wars universe. Each player takes control of the galaxy’s finest starfighters, either the Resistance X-wing or the First Order TIE fighters, and pits them against each other in a brutal battle for control in space.

We seem to be seeing more large ships that aren't starfighters appear in this game with every wave. Shuttles and light freighters aren't built for dog-fighting, yet they seem to be able to outmanoeuvre and outpace some of the best starfighters.

If you have any epic ships, use their bases and stands instead. Keeps the large ships high off the table and they're a lot more sturdy.

Since this is a rules thread, and since overlapped is a defined term in the rules: ship models do not overlap, only bases overlap. Tournament rules say that if ship models interfere with each other, add or remove pegs. For casual play, it is usually just easier to remove one ship from the base until they aren't interfering with each other any more.
