TIE crack swarm - 2 varieties

By enigmahfc, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So, I know TIE crackshot swarms are nothing new or unique, but I've never flown one and there is a small store tournament this weekend. I wanted to try a crack swarm, so I came up with 2 varieties I was wanting everyone else to weigh in on. Which is, theoretically, better between:

Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)
Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)
Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)
Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)
"Howlrunner" (18)
Swarm Tactics (2)
"Youngster" (15)
Marksmanship (3)
Total: 98
OR
Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)
Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)
Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)
Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Crack Shot (1)
"Howlrunner" (18)
Swarm Tactics (2)
"Epsilon Leader" (19)
Total: 99
I'd have to borrow the Youngster TIE, not that the fact is either here nor there. I like them both. The range restriction on Epsilon Leader kind of sucks, but I would be trying to fly in formation after all. On the other hand, Marksmanship with re-rolls seems great, but it sort of forces the use of a single action for most of the TIEs.

I've seen quite a few TIE swarms win, from store champs to regionals. None have Youngster. A strong, competitive version is one with:

Black Sq - Crack Shot x4

Howlrunner - Crack Shot

Zeta Leader - Crack Shot

Another good one that won a System open is:

Black Sq - Crack Shot x3

Academy Pilot x3

Howlrunner - Crack Shot

The latter has one more ship for shooting and blocking.

Marksmanship is a bad choice for a ship that only gets a single attack each round. So you are not getting a crit - the point of a swarm is that you can wear down your opponent with many regular hits going through.

There are also times when you need the focus token for defense so that your TIE fighter actually gets to shoot instead of blowing up.

Because I only have 5 TIE's I'll probably end up going with Epsilon Leader, unless I can borrow Wampa (or say screw it and buy the Gorgonzola Assault Carrier).

My variation is

Howlrunner w/Crackshot

Mauler Mithel w/Crackshot

Scourge w/Crackshot

Black Squadron w/Crackshot x3

My variation is

Howlrunner w/Crackshot

Mauler Mithel w/Crackshot

Scourge w/Crackshot

Black Squadron w/Crackshot x3

I've faced this a number of times. Its quite nasty...

When a ship becomes damaged, if Scourge can stay around then he becomes like a mini-ace, Mithel is Mithel and Howlrunner does what she does... I've found the biggest problem my opponents have is choosing who to shoot at first since I can normally position Howlrunner into a good defensive position right away...

That being said, the Youngster-Markmanship-Wampa combo is fun. Especially for those who don't have the a Raider or Emperor Palpatine.

I feel like in a swarm you don't need to chase Wampa's ability too hard. People tend to try and get rid of the Crackshot TIEs or Howlrunner (if you brought her) if Wampa doesn't look like a threat. He's gotta roll a crit eventually.

BTW: What are you doing with your unused Kihraxzes once you unpack Crackshot? :D

Double post error.

IKR. Thankfully I only needed 4. I got the other 2 via the YV-666 and vets.
