Not an LDS member, but if this works like other overseas outreach programs there is a learning and education period. Since he is part of an organized group, they may require him to go to a learning facility where he will be taught important basics about how to live in Kenya and how to perform effective religious outreach while he is there. If he leaves in September, that will basically be two months of training, then two years of missionary work.

Yeah I thought he went to Provo in the fall. Not a Mormon either I should add, just marginally aware of the situation
