Rexler with a min swarm?

By SDCC, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Rexler - TB, MK II, PTL, TIE/D

Howlrunner - Swarm Tactics

Academy x 3

96 points.

Crazy? Possibly useful?

Personally I'd give Rexler XX23 Thread Tracers with that. Having every TIE with a target lock on a single unit could lead to some wonderful shenanigans.

To do that you would have to give up Rexler firing both his tractor beam and primaries for a turn. Howlrunner already provides a reroll on one dice provided the Accademies stay close and if Rexler hits with his TB then the target will be -1 Agility. Probably more damaging than one-off free target locks and it does not cost Rex his shooting.

So, yesterday I took 3 cracked blacks, cracked Howly and Maarek with TB/xD and adaptability (for PS8). Went 2-1, 16 people but only 3 rounds of swiss. I think there was like 3 or 4 scum lists and all other people chosen Imperial forces (I am wondering why? lol).

Anyway, the mini swarm was great. TB indeed worked in many cases as an almost-crack shot upgrade. If someone ignored it or could not avoid, the defender was almost for sure dead. After that there was 5 following shots. JM5k went down in two turns, Ryad/x7 in one. However, I have to say that a big issue of this list would be well piloted aces. First of all, if an enemy splits his forces and makes the swarm to try to catch one.. heh... maybe that is my low experience with swarms but it is way too easy to loose control and start bumping in own ships, actionless. The last game I lost to a crack swarm of 6 ties. This was a pity, but the fact that TB does no damage itself was a pain here. In the first exchange lost 2 ties and took down 1. I've spent the TB to push away the bad Howly so that she had no one in arc and 2 of his ties were out of R1, but that also made my ties not reaching her, which was probably one of bigger issues from my side at late game. At the end of the day I think I could play more defensively (to save MoV) by not spending TIEs tokens on attack, though it was not bad. :) Next time I think I will change to Ryad. Her PS will help me in a way - TB will be not used to avoid fire from a single opponent but to focus fire on him (which should be the correct way).
