Beginner Questions

By slowreflex, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

Played my first game yesterday. Some things weren't clear.

The cards that come with the heroes. Can you use those whenever?

The lightning abilities (can't remember name)... Can you use multiples of the same ability within an attack?

When there is a group for the same card, do they all have the health specified and take damage individually?

The Imperial gunner engineer guy that's two spaces long. Can he move horizontally? Or does he need to rotate and move forward/backward?

Does it matter which way your models are facing?

I think that was most of the questions.. Thanks for your help. :)

Class cards?

Each ability can be only used once per timing instance. This includes surge abilities - each surge ability can only be used once per attack.

Each figure in a group are activated separately in the order of the controller's choosing. Each figure is separate. Each have the specified health.

E-Web Engineer can move in all 4 directions, not diagonally (because it's a large figure).

There is no facing in the game.

The cards that come with the heroes. Can you use those whenever?

The Hero class decks come with one card that you start with, the starting weapon.

All the other cards have xp costs at the bottom, and you will be able to buy them at various points during the campaign when you have earned xp.

The lightning abilities (can't remember name)... Can you use multiples of the same ability within an attack?

Surge abilities can only be used once per triggered attack. So, for instance, if you have ~ +1 Damage and roll two ~, only one of these can be used for the ability.

It's good to remember that the heroes always have the ability to recover strain for one ~, so if you've got nothing better to spend them on do that...

When there is a group for the same card, do they all have the health specified and take damage individually?

Yes, the group shows the total cost for the deployment, but the health is individual to each figure in that group.

Regular Stormtroopers cost 6 to deploy all 3 figures, but each figure has 3 health.

The Imperial gunner engineer guy that's two spaces long. Can he move horizontally? Or does he need to rotate and move forward/backward?

Does it matter which way your models are facing?

There is no facing in this game, so the E-Web Engineer can fire in any direction from his figure.

I know this exists and I did skim through it searching for answers to these questions. It was my first game and I was playing the tutorial with my son. It's not like this is all straight-forward stuff and it's not very well explained in the tutorial (or Rules Reference in many instances) in my opinion.

Oh, I see. I don't recall anything about "xp" mentioned in the Tutorial section, but maybe I missed it. Thanks for clearing that up.

It's not, and there are all kinds of non-obvious mistakes you can make. So you'll need to refer to the rules regularly at first. Fortunately you don't have to learn it all at once. New mechanisms are added during the first few missions of the campaign. Small mistakes do not matter that much at first as long as you double-check the rules after each of the first few missions.
