Clarification on the prerequisites for a Mark of Chaos?

By TheWorldSmith, in Black Crusade Rules Questions

Hey guys! My group has hit a snag and is disagreeing on how we get Marks of Chaos. The relevant Quote...

Marks of Chaos

Those characters who are deeply ingrained upon the path
of Alignment to a deity may earn that Dark God’s Mark. A
mark imparts particular abilities upon a character when it is
received. When a character has taken twenty advances upon
a single path of Devotion, their persistence will attract that
sponsor’s attention. If the character has at least five more

Advances from that path than from any other Dark God, then
they earn the mark of their respective Chaos God. Once a
Mark is earned, it is kept for as long as they remain true to
their Devotion.
No expenditure of xp is required to receive a Mark of Chaos.
It is instead a reward from the Ruinous Powers directly to those
servants who are most true to their ways. Note that Marks may
also be received via Gifts of the Gods on pages 299–303.
If a character ever leaves a path of Devotion that has earned
them a Mark of Chaos, they immediately lose the Mark and all
associated benefits. In addition, they incur the wrath of their
former sponsor. At the time they leave the path that garnered
them the Mark, they must immediately roll twice upon Table
9–1: Gifts of the Gods (see page 291) and pick the worse result
(the GM is the final arbitrator whether a result is bad or not).
Note that there is no Mark for being unaligned.

Looks to me like we are just having different interpretations of what's being said. Is it true that PCs must only have at least five more Advances on a path compared to the other paths of the Dark Gods? Do we have to have at least 20 Advances in any given path, as well as all other paths having at least 5 less that the path in which you desire a Mark of Chaos? Or is there some other interpretation that we haven't come up with as of yet?

Thanks!

20 advances total in one specific path, and 5 more advances in that path, compared to any other god's.

As an example, you can make do with 20 Khorne advances and nothing else.

You "align" when you 5 more than any other.

If you're aligned and have 20 advances total (or more) from your aligned deity, then you get the mark.

This leads to khorne taking a lot of hatred skills and Tz taking a lot knowlege skills to get to that 20 mark cheaply.
