New Rebel Player

By LordSoth15, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello everyone,

I am new player and I am going to go to the LHS and join the league tonight. Here is what I have for ships. Any Advice on Tactics and set up wold be helpful!!!

YT-1300

T-70 X wing

A-Wing

B-Wing

I was thinking about having the YT-1300 fly on the outside of the board and try to get a cheap A-wing and Xwing to stay close and fight... I am currently working on my builds.

Thanks

JM

My Advice would be to not have a plan and as a new player do two things: fly things that look cool and try things to see how they work out but expect nothing. Until you learn your ships and find your style the game can feel very overwhelming. Have fun!

I like the advice.

Here is who I think I am going to line up...

YT-1300 Han Solo - Engine Upgrade - Nien Nunb - Mellennium Falcon - 52 PTS

T-70 X Wing Blue Squadron Novice - R5X3 - 25PTS

B-Wing Blue Squadron Pilot - 22PTS

This is very good advice. With X-Wing, and with miniature games in general, it is often best to throw yourself into the midst of battle a few times first, to get a feel for the game. That way, you can easier relate to specific situations when they come up in tactical discussions.

One thing, though. I do not recommend turreted ships to beginners, simply because they are too "easy" to play. You will learn faster if you don't run turrets. But if you like the Falcon, by all means, fly it. Having fun is more important than learning fast.

My advice for a new player is to make sure you keep your ships fairly close together so the can focus fire on one enemy ship at a time. This will remove enemy ships faster and also help you out in the long game. Don't fly them in a close formation because large ships and small ships in close proximity will bump a lot. Especially with a new player driving them. The trick is to fly them close enough to focus fire with out bumping into each other. This will take practice.

Play more games, winning will come. That said, engine upgrades, c3po, predator, Luke Skywalker gunner.

For the up close tactic I would recommend the B and A wings, the hard 1 turn is great for close quarters.

Barring the hype from these other fine players, be yourself and be a scum player ;) Above all else welcome to our world, fly casual and please enjoy yourself above all else ;)

I think your list is a pretty good one, and yeah, I agree with everyone else in that you should just fly what you like and see what works.

Also, did you get your A-wing and B-wing with Rebel Aces, if not, and you end up liking those ships, GET REBEL ACES. Jake Farrell, the A-Wing Test Pilot title, and Chaardan Refit are amazing A-Wing options, and there are some really neat B-Wing options, as well.

My favorite part of this pack is the A-Wing pilot, Jake Farrell: After you perform the focus action or are assigned a focus token, you may perform a free boost or barrel roll action.

A barrel-rolling A-wing is brilliant. With Jake with the A-Wing Test Pilot title (gives you another EPT slot), Veteran Instincts, and Push the Limit, you have a PS9 Rebel Ace that can do 3 actions per turn with fantastic repositioning options.

So I played a game and got beat, like everyone said. I was a gap in the astroid fields and went for the Kill with the Falcon, not sure that was the best move, but it was a learning experience. I can't wait to play this week!!!

I have been reading and I am going to pick up some other Kits. So Far I have the Force Awakens Core Set, Rebel Aces, X-Wing Expansion Pack & Millennium Falcon. Any Suggestions on what kits have good cards?

The aces and veterans kits are by far the best purchases off the bat. Since you've already got rebel aces, you've got a bounty of choices.

If you want to stay all rebel:

1. Buy an R2D2 card from someone. It's essential for Poe Dameron Lists and anything with an astromech slot. You should be able to find someone around who bought two of the original core sets and has an extra copy lying around.

2. The E-wing expansion pack gives you advanced sensors and Corran horn, who are both mainstays in the rebel arsenal.

3. Either the K-wing (For twin laser turret), T70 X-wing expansion pack (For integrated astromech) or another B-wing pack (To make use of that second B-wing/E2 card and gain Ten Numb).

4. At this point you should have enough cards and ships to make a semi-competitive list, and go for whatever strikes your fancy. Keep in mind that you'll often get beaten until you pick up such key cards as autothrusters for Poe, push the limit, etc. Try buying the cards individually from your local players; they're much cheaper than buying full packs that you'll never use (like the Starviper just to get autothrusters).

If you don't mind what faction you buy:

1. Imperial Veterans + 1 TIE Defender. This is an instant gateway into competitive play in the current meta. Defenders have tricks, resilience and Pilot skill values that make them very forgiving to fly. There are numerous articles out on great builds for them.

2. YT2400. This ship gives you Dash Rendar and the doughnut hole of doom (look it up). A very forgiving ship to fly, and it comes with two of the cards designed by previous world champions. Once you get Push the Limit you can make the '58 Dash Special, which is a very impressive ship to fly.

3. Anything with 'key' cards for your next list idea. After my first few purchases of mainstay ships (Interceptors, B-wings and the like) I started buying packs not for the ships, but for individual cards. This not only grew my collection, but gave me powerful combinations like Keyan Farlander + Opportunist + Heavy Laser Cannon.

4. Packs with good cards (in descending order): Imperial Veterans, Imperial Aces, E-wing, K-wing, Starviper, TIE Phantom, TIE Defender, Core Set Mk I, YT2400, Y-wing (for the ship, not the cards) and finally the B-wing.

That's about as much of a guide as I can give. X-wing is set up so that you can play with the core set, play well after a few purchases, but play to win (big tournaments) only after a significant capital investment. So buy whatever floats your boat.

It's not too late to forget terrorism and join the glorious forces of the empire spreading peace and justice instead of fear and death.

I approve this message.

I picked up the 1st Core set, E wing and another T-70 X wing. I think I will go with a Falcon and E wing combo tomorrow. the E wing looks good

The E-wing is amazing. Combining it with the Falcon is the Rebel equivalent of Whisper and Chireneau.

Here's a few Corran Horn builds that you might like to try...

Corran Horn (35)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Engine Upgrade (4)

R2D2 (4)

Total: 47 points.

A PS 10 ace with regenerating shields and 3 agility is nothing to scoff at. The barrel roll + boost +advanced sensors combination makes him very hard to hit.

Corran Horn (35)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Push the Limit (3)

Engine Upgrade (4)

R2D2 (4)

Total: 49 points.

PTL over VI makes you less of an ace killer and more of a tank. Here's the way it goes: Use advanced sensors to do an action, then use PTL to do another action and receive a stress, then reveal a green maneuver to clear the stress and recover a shield using R2D2. If you take an evade as one of your two actions, the enemy has to sink three damage through your 3 AGI ship each turn for it to have any long-term effect at all. Meanwhile, your falcon is dominating the board.

The trick with E-wings is that the opposing player knows he probably can't beat them in the endgame, so they'll go for him first. This means that whatever the other half of you squad is has to be far more threatening than Corran. Something like super Han, for instance.

Ok, Im going to try this tonight:

Corran Horn (35)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Engine Upgrade (4)

R2D2 (4)

Han Solo (46)

Push the Limit (3)

Millennium Falcon (1)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Nien Nunb (1)

Intelligence Agent (1)

Nice work creating a (relatively) low cost Falcon. There;s absolutely nothing wrong with the list as is, and could be competitive in the right meta.

Heads up though, you're at 103 points. I'd suggest swapping out Han for Lando and ditching the intelligence agent to make it a square 100 points. This means that Corran can (and should) be doing 3 actions, per round, essentially making him untouchable. however, what you have is definitely fine for a casual game, and you can always ditch engine upgrade on Han t make it fit into a 100 pt list.

Good luck with your games tonight, if you haven't already had them.

I got caught at work and could not make the league... I will have to try this list against my wife this weekend if i can convince her to play. She usually will entertain me as long as wine is involved. Sadly she is 3-0 against me

Join the work club! I too have to sacrifice game time for work obligations.

Perhaps the wine is responsible for that 3-0 record. A most devious strategy...
