Ship tokens shortage

By Alabast, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I'd like to fly a list with Captain Jonus and 2 Scimitar squadron pilots. I own two TIE Bomber expansions and imperial veterans, so I have 3 bomber models, but only two possible tokens to use since Jonus and Scimitar occupy different sides of the same ship token.

Similar issue with flying Leachos with 2 Binarye pirates, while only owning 1x Most wanted, plus the Z-95 from the Hound's Tooth expansion.

I'd really rather not buy more expansions with ships I don't need. Anyone else have this issue? Are 3rd party tokens an option?

Tournament wise it's a no go but you can definitely play this casually as long as people are aware of which pilot is which.

Also if you are planning to play competitively the Gamma Vets will be a ton more useful than Scimitars.

Yup.

Casual play, no one should care.

Sanctioned tournament, borrow some from a friend before the tournament.

Well, sure, Gamma Vets are great and would be better, and so would Rexler Brath and a pair of Decimators, but I only have 100 points to spread around ;)

Seriously, though, that's annoying. They couldn't include two extra cards and 1 plate in these expansions?

Not without charging more or crowding out other things in the expansion, no. I'm consistently impressed by how rare this kind of resource problem is, given that every ship chit is double-sided. Not that that makes it less annoying when it does happen.

It's not the first time it's happened. You go back to the first reprints beyond core+expansion and Imperial Aces made for impossible TIE Interceptor combinations when combined with a single Expansion pack. Want to fly Jax and two Royal Guards? Tough because Jax and the RG share a token. Want to fly 3 Alphas? Again you can't do it because RAces doesn't include the low PS generics.

The problem also shows up when you want to fly Z-95s; you may have enough models between Expansions and Most Wanted but coming up with the tokens can be tricky when generics are backed by uniques.

If you dead set on flying this squad then you have to bite the bullet and buy another Tie Bomber or just include a different ship/pilot. There are hundreds of other ship/upgrades combos to switch to.

The Hound's tooth doesn't come with a Z-95. It comes with a dial and a pilot token with the Nashtah Pup Pilot on both sides.

EVERY EXPANSION is based around the principle "can take any single pilot with any upgrade from the pack and you'l have enough cardboard for that"

"non-native" expansions like Hounds Tooth aren't even meant to be played with cardboard from other expansions.

More Most Wanted!)

Sure, I have some Rebel Z-95 expansions, but I still need the hounds tooth dial for play 3 in a scum squad.

Or just ask a friendly guy to loan you the ship base for the competition. Ask ahead and save yourself some money.

What are you running on your ships? Gamma Vets pretty heavily loaded come out around 29 points each. 42 points is way too much for Jonus considering he doesn't benefit himself.

Jonus, TIE Shuttle, Tactician, Systems officer, TIE mk II

Scimitar, Plasma Torp, Extra Mun, guidance chips (x2)

Inquisitor, autothrusters, title, adaptability, thread tracers.

If I can't get another plate, I guess I can replace one Scimitar with "Deathfire" and lose the thread tracers from the Inquisitor. That makes getting early shots with those torps from the low ps dudes much harder, though. I think I need to switch out Guidance chips for LRS.

Notable exception: the TIE Punisher expasion doesn't come with Target Locks.

Why? You can use any dials that go with a specific model regardless of how they are decorated. Including a dial in Hound's Tooth is mostly a complete waste of cardboard.

Is that so? I thought your dials had to match your faction.

There was a brief moment in wave 6 when FFG said that dials had to match by faction. This caused an uproar as many people did not want to buy multiple copies of Most Wanted in order to run multiple Y-wings, for example. FFG relented.

That was mentioned prior to Most Wanted's release but except for a brief period (6-12 hour window before the FAQ was corrected) you've always been able to use any dial with the correct corresponding model.

The rules have always said that as long as you don't compromise dial function (ie. its ability to hide and reveal maneuvers) you could do what you want to distinguish your dials from others. From this you could just color your dial faces all back and at that point what's the difference between the Scum dials and something else?

There are already ways to make you buy additional product as the ship token/base tile question in this topic demonstrates. The dials are just one more punitive punishment and considering how much cardboard space they take (along with the plastic connector) I'm MUCH rather see other things, like maybe more ship base tiles, used in that cardboard space.

Well for Jax and the two royals, you'd only have one Red Interceptor per set. It just happens that two Ints came in that set.

Paint jobs are COMPLETELY irrelevant when it comes to ships. Fly Fel in the Expansion ship, Alpha in with the red paint job and Jax with the stripes and you're completely fine. Still couldn't fly two Royals + Jax if you wanted to.
