TIE Fighter/TIE Bomber mixed squad

By Magnus Grendel, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Looking to use the new Imperial Veterans upgrades to make a slight variation on a traditional Howlrunner/Crack Shot swarm - the result loses one ship, but is actually probably a touch tougher, and whilst it loses an attack, the alpha strike should hurt a lot more:

  • Howlrunner, Crack Shot
  • Black Squadron Pilot, Crack Shot x 2
  • Gamma Squadron Veteran, Crack Shot, Homing Missiles, Long Range Scanners x 2

The idea is that the Gamma Squadron Veterans - when against an opposing Howlrunner swarm - should have the firepower to punch out Howlrunner without assistance at PS5.

Both sides will get to fire with their TIE fighters into the other, but the opponent will have lost Howlrunner before the Black Squadron pilots get to benefit from her rerolls.

Under normal (head to head pass) circumstances, I'll probably kill one other TIE fighter whilst the enemy swarm will blow away (my) Howlrunner, which leaves us even in numbers after the initial pass, but me with two higher PS and much tougher TIE Bombers.

It also gives the swarm some 'reach out and touch someone' firepower to range 3 - a pair of Crack Shot Homing Missiles with Target Lock & Focus stands a pretty good chance of reducing Soontir Fel to drifting wreckage, and are more than likely to at least wing him....

Why Crack Shot Homing LRS over Deadeye Homing GC?

Because the difference between four dice with focus and target lock and four dice with focus and guidance chips is fairly minimal (both average as near as ****-it three-and-three-quarter hits) but this way I get to stack crack shot on top of it, which is a big change in likely damage. When you've only got one attack that really matters, attaching crack shot makes it really lethal.

When trying to land the magic "one hit, any hit" on soontir fel, crack shot could make the difference.
